In a view point of environment, the advanced electric contact material without environmental load element such as cadmium has to be developed. Extensive studies have been carried out on $Ag-SnO_2$ electric contact material as a substitute of Ag-CdO contact materials. In the present study, powder metallurgy including compaction and sintering is introduced to solve the incomplete oxidation problems in manufacturing process of $Ag-SnO_2$ electrical contact material. The $Ag-SnO_2$ contact material, fabricated in this study, was actually set in an electric switchgear of which working voltage is 462V and current is between 25 and 40A, for the purpose of testing its performance. As a result, it exceeded the existing Ag-CdO contact materials in terminal-temperature ascent and main contact resistance.

In electric railways, high speed trains are normally supplied by AC 25kV power by contact between a pantograph contact strip and a contact wire. Advanced railway operating countries are actively researching various areas for the development of contact strips due to the reason that the properties of contact strips are one of the key factors of electric railways. This paper applied nano technology which is rapidly growing in many areas to the contact strip of a pantograph for current collection performance improvement considering speed up of electric railways. In detail, this paper proposes a method to dope nano particles of metal to a Korea Train eXpress(KTX) carbon pantograph and its measurement results. It is expected that the contents of this paper be used for preliminary study of high-speed railway current collection technologies.

The measurement of contact wire wear in electric railways is one of the key test parameters to increase speed and maintain safety in electric railways. Wear caused by continuous interaction between pantographs and contact wires has a negative effect on current collection quality and severely damaged contact wires might cause hazardous accidents. This paper introduces a non-contact optical-based contact wire wear measuring system that will replace conventional wear detecting methods conducted by maintenance vehicles or workers. The system is implemented by high-speed cameras that can collect images of contact wires during vehicle operation, a laser used to create images profile of the contact wire surface, and a computer used to process the collected images. The proposed system is designed to assist maintenance of overhead contact lines by creating geometrically plotted images of contact wires to detect contact wire wear during operation on conventional lines or high-speed lines.
There are many electrical connections in the electric apparatus and most fires due to a fault contact result from a failure or misuse of electric apparatus and installation. The fault contact happens between electrical connections by the loose and the mechanical vibration. In this paper, we have investigated thermal and electrical properties of screwed electric contacts due to the mechanical vibration. The exciter was connected to a signal generator and power amplifier that provided the vibration frequency and amplitude. The vibration, temperature and voltage data were sent to a data acquisition system (DAQ). In the case that fault contact took place, the arc happened between the screwed electric contact and electric wire, heat due to the arc was transmitted to the adjacent insulators, for which the oxide could be generated more. In addition, a spark was generated and the insulator began to melt. Thus, the possibility of electrical fire became the highest in this case. Finally, when the fault contact takes place due to vibration, the hazard of an electric accident is very high.

Since high-speed train is a dynamic load in which electric power is externally supplied, contact loss between the catenary and pantograph occurs. This phenomena including vibrations generates frequently irregular arcs, which, in turn causes EMI. Thus it is very important to develop the approach to reduce arc phenomenon by contact loss, as speed of electric railway vehicle increases. In case of an electric railway vehicle using electrical power, compared with diesel rolling stock, Power Line Disturbance(PLD) such as harmonics, transient voltage and current, Electromagnetic Interference(EMI), and dummy signal injection etc usually occur. In this study, the dynamic characteristics of a contact wire and a pantograph suppling electrical power to high-speed train are investigated with an electrical response point. To implement power line disturbance induced by contact loss phenomenon for high speed train operation, a hardware simulator which considers contact loss between contact wire and pantograph as well as contact wire deviation is developed. It is confirmed by the experiments that contact loss effect is largely dependent on voltage conditions when the contact loss occurs. Also, a passive filter is designed to reduce power disturbance and the designed system is verified by experiment.
Fretting corrosion tests are conducted with a constant displacement amplitude using silver-plated brass coupons to investigate the effect of contact pressure on fretting corrosion. Three behaviors are identified based on the change in electric resistance and friction coefficient during the fretting test period, and the identified behaviors are dependent on the magnitude of the applied load. The failure cycle ($N_f$) with an electric resistance of 0.1 D cannot be achieved due to the adhesion behavior of the metal and metal contact under the higher applied load of 0.45 N. This suggests that an average contact pressure higher than 159 MPa for the silver-coated connector is desirable to gain an almost infinite lifetime. The relationship between the electric contact resistance (R) and the average contact pressure (p) can be written as $p=106.2{\times}{\Omega}^{-1.5}$.
The brazing adhesion properties of Ag coated W-Ag electric contact on the Cu substrate have been investigated in therms of microstructure, phase equilibrium and adhesion strength. Precoating of Ag layer ($3{\mu}m$ in thickness) on the $W-40\%Ag$ contact material was done by electro-plating method. Subsequently the brazing treatment was conducted by inserting BCuP-5 filler metal (Ag-Cu-P alloy) layer between Ag coated W-Ag and Cu substrate and annealing at $710^{\circ}C$ in $H_2$ atmosphere. The optimum brazing temperature of $710^{\circ}C$ was semi-empirically calculated on the basis of the Cu atomic diffusion profile in Ag layer of commercial electric contact produced by the same brazing process. As a mechanical test of the electric contact after brazing treatment the adhesion strength between the electric contact and Cu substrate was measured using Instron. The microstructure and phase equilibrium study revealed that the sound interlayer structure was formed by relatively low brazing treatment at $710^{\circ}C$. Thin Ag electro-plated layer precoated on the electric contact ($3{\mu}m$ in thickness) is thought to be enough for high adhesion strength arid sound microstructure in interface layer.
In this paper, electric field analysis of 170kV class GCB is carried out. Considering the movement of arcing contacts during circuit interruption, electric field analysis between moving and fixed contacts is performed with changing the stroke length. From analysis results, electric field stresses are high at stationary arcing contact, moving arcing contact and varies at changing nozzle shapes. Specially, the stationary arcing contact shape has an significant effect on the capacitive small current interruption and the reduction of the electric field stress at this area is important. Varying the shape of stationary arcing contact, electric field analysis is carried out and the optimal shpae of the fixed arcing contact where the electric field stress is low is designed.

The measurement of dynamic stagger in electric railways is one of the key test parameters to increase speed and maintain safety in electric railways. This paper is introduces a non-contact optical-based measuring instrument of a catenary system in electric railways. The instrument is implemented by utilizing a CCD (Charge Coupled Device) camera installed on the roof of a vehicle for vision acquisition and image processing techniques including the Canny edge detector and the Hough transform to detect contact wires and calculate dynamic stagger. To check the validity of our approach for the intended application, we measured stagger of a overhead wire of a Korea Tilting Train (TTX). The non-contact optical-based measurement system proposed in this paper performs real-time stagger measurement of an activated high-voltage contact wire. By results of this paper, the instrument should be applied to assess performance and reliability of newly developed electric railway vehicles.

This study on the prevention of electric fire. Generally the electric fire is caused by break or disconnection of the power line, short circuit and poor contact, arcing fault ect. In these causes, this paper is studied on the detection of poor contact and arcing fault. The arcing fault is caused by poor contact mainly. The arcing fault can occurs a electric fire by interaction of flammable gas and materials and it can be caused of tracking and carbonization. These phenomenons is also caused of electric fire. Therefore this paper is studied on the detection of arcing fault and poor contact.
