According to weight lightning trend of automobile body, necessity of resistance spot welding (RSW) of Mg alloy on automobile industry is increasing rapidly because of the highest specific strength among commercial metals. Mg alloy has low electric resistance and high thermal conductivity like as Al alloy, so that needs applying high current in short time when welding. Thick oxide film of Mg alloy pollutes the electrodes and makes partial current carrying paths when on welding. Partial current carrying paths signify excessive concentration of current. There can initiate expulsion easily and reduces electrode life rapidly. Generating partial current carrying paths and expulsions are influenced by shapes of electrode. Therefore, electrode life also influenced by shape. In this study, we perform life test of RSW electrode of radius type. Measure tensile shear load and nugget size every spot alternately. As a result, radius type electrode can extend life over twice as dome type electrode.

This study examined the mechanical strength and corrosion resistance of a dissimilar joint with an aluminum alloy and steel by resistance element spot welding. SPFC980 steels and Al5052 alloys were applied as the base materials. S20C steels were assembled on Al5052 for the riveting element before the electric resistance welding process. The SPFC980-S20C riveted Al5052 was welded at a 6.5 kA current and 250 kgf/㎠. As a result, the engraved S20C elements formed unstable nuggets after the spot welding processes. In contrast, in the embossed S20C elements, exceptional mechanical properties, such as robust corrosion resistance and fatigue resistance, were obtained by structurally sound joints. The correlation between the microstructure and mechanical properties were examined by microstructural investigations and FEM simulations. The corrosion reliability of element spot-welded SPFC980-Al5052 dissimilar joints was investigated systematically.
The fracture toughness, $J_{IC}$ of high frequency electric resistance welded steel pipe for smooth and side-grooved CT specimen was evaluated by unloading compliance method. The crack growth, .${\delta}a$ was obtained from the equation of Donald and Saxena & Hudak, and $J_{IC}$ was determined from the curve of J-${\delta}a$ relations. The crack growth on the experiment using unloading compliance method is underestimated as compared with ${\delta}a$ measured directly by the SEM, so the reliability of $J_{IC}$ from saxena & Hudak equation is large than that from Donald. The $J_{IC}$ value of side-grooved CT Specimen is estimated less than that of smooth, and this is the effect of the side-groove, the shear-lip of crack tip and the reduction of crack tunnelling phenomena.
Spot welding, namely a kind of electric resisting welding has been used widely in field of automobile and aircraft industries because of easiness to apply. Specimens used in this study was a mild steel of 1.2mm thickness and the electrode was a Cu-Cr alloy of 6mm diameter. The surface sheared of specimens after testing of tensile shear was observed by SEM(scanning electron microscope) after ultrasonic cleaning for 10min., and microstructures and grain size of all specimens were measured with using of O.M.(Optical microscope). By the means of measurement and observations of tensile shear load, fatigue strength and share surface, the weldability of spot welding was evaluated. When tensile shearing testing, fracture starting point in all specimens was took place at the bond between HAZ(Heat affected zone) and nugget. With increasing in number of layers, fatigue strength was decreased. With increasing in electric current, grain size in the HAZ became more fine.

The resistance Spot Welding is widely used in the field of assembling the plates. However we don't still have any satisfactory solution, which is non-destructive quality evaluation in real-time or on-line, against it. Moreover, even though the rate of welding under the condition of expulsion has been high until now, quality control of welding against expulsion hasn't still been established. In this paper, it was proposed on the quality assurance technique of resistance spot welding pieces using Neuro-Fuzzy algorithm. Four parameters from electrode separation signal in the case of non-expulsion, and dynamic resistance patterns in the case of expulsion are selected as fuzzy input parameters. The parameters consist of Fuzzy Inference System are determined through Neuro-Learning algorithm. And then, fuzzy Inference System is constructed. It was confirmed that the fuzzy inference values of strength have within ${\pm}$4% error specimen in comparison with real strength for the total strength range, and the specimen percent having within ${\pm}$1% error was 88.8%. According to KS(Korean Industrial Standard), tensile-shear strength limit for electric coated of zinc is 400kgf/mm2. Judging to the quality of welding is good or bad, according to this criterion and the results of inference, the probability of misjudgement that good quality is valuated into poor one was 0.43%, on contrary it was 2.59%. Finally, the proposed Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System can infer the tensile-shear strength of resistance spot welding pieces with high performance for all cases-non-expulsion and expulsion. And On-Line Welding Quality Inspection System will be realized sooner or later.

High-frequency electric resistance welding (HERW) technique is one of the most productive manufacturing method currently available for pipe and tube production because of its high welding speed. In this process, a heat input is controlled by skilled operators observing color and shape of bead but such a manual control can not provide reliability and stability required for manufacturing pipes of high grade quality because of a variety of bead shapes and noisy environment. In this paper, in an effort to provide reliable quality inspection, we propose a neural network-based method for classification of bead shape. The proposed method utilizes the structure of Kohonen network and is designed to learn the skill of the expert operators and to provide a good solution to classify bead shapes according to their welding conditions. This proposed method is implemented on the real pipe manufacturing process, and a series of experiments are performed to show its effectiveness.
It is difficult to control welding variables during spot welding of non-ferrous metals like aluminum because of the low electrical resistance of the material. It has been suggested that a solid state welding process such as friction stir spot welding or extru-spot welding can be used to spot weld aluminum plates. In the extru-spot welding, there is a need to increase the weld strength by improving the shape of the welding die. The current study shows that the weld strength for an extru-spot welding can be increased by using a pin placed on the inside of the upper electrode in the welding die. In the current study, the deformed shape of the insert rivet and the stress distribution in the welding zone were analyzed by simulation. Extru-rivet spot welding experiments were performed by changing the height of pin on the inside of the upper electrode. From the experimental result, it is shown that the weld strength for an extru-rivet spot welding can be increased by adjusting the height of the pin. The optimal shape of the deformed rivet after the extru-rivet spot welding can be observed from the simulation results. The deformed shape of the insert rivet can also be controlled by the height of pin.

IRW(Inverter Resistance Welding) process and DSW(Delta-spot welding) process for dissimilar materials of DP590 and Al5052 were performed to evaluate the welding quality and mechanical properties. IRW experiment was carried out with changing the welding current. The other welding parameters such as pressure force, weld time, squeezing time and holding time were fixed. On the anther hand, DSW experiment was performed using the process tape at welding current of 11.5kA. The other conditions were same as IRW conditions. The various testes such as shear tensile strength, nugget diameters, EDS, SEM and cross-sectional observation for weld zone was performed. As a result, IMC(Inter Metallic Compound) thickness at 11.5kA was thinner than those of 9.5kA and 10.5kA conditions. In addition, thined IMC layer was observed when high electric current apply to the materials(DP590 and Al5052) in a short time throught dissimilar resistance spot welding controling welding conditions. The relationship between the thickeness of IMC and current intensity was after discussed.

In this paper, we present research experimental results about the different thickness T-joint welding of the high power continuous wave(CW) Nd:YAG laser for the secondary battery of a vehicle. Although the conventional method used for the secondary battery is a argon TIG welding, we utilize a laser welding to improve Tungsten Inert Gas(TIG) welding's weakness. The laser, which has a couple of advantage such as aspect ratio, low Heat Affected Zone(HAZ), good welding quality and fast productivity utilized in this work is a CW Nd:YAG laser. In order to observe laser welding sections, we used a optical microscope. Through the analysis of the metallographic, hardness, aspect ratio, and heat input, we obtained the desired data in condition of 1800 W laser beam power and 1.8 m/min and 2.0 m/min laser beam travel speeds. In order to compare electric resistances of the argon TIG welding and laser welding, we made an actual battery and the electric resistance of the laser welding is reduced by 40~45% comparing with the argon TIG welding.
