  • The Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs is currently pushing forward policies targeting the Rural Convergence Industry initiative to incubate the front-runners of the '6th industry', to increase off-farm income, to create rural jobs for elderly, and to create women-based farms. As a result, in 2017, a total of 11,604 Rural Convergence Industries were in business, and the goods produced from those industries were diverse. However, the quality and safety of those products are not being checked and managed thoroughly, which has caused consumers to not trust products made from the Rural Convergence Industries. Through a survey and the ordering logit model, this study analyzed consumer perception of the safety and quality of goods from the Rural Convergence Industries. The analysis revealed that we must first raise awareness of the importance of rural agriculture areas and the products of the Rural Convergence Industries to uplift consumer perceptions regarding the products produced by the industries. The analysis also revealed that diverse points of distribution (sellers), education on the importance of rural and urban areas, and marketing Rural Convergence Industry products within suburban consumer populations are necessary to increase the consumption of these products.

  • In this study, I wanted to propose the design direction of the furniture and products in bathroom space so that the elderly's life is well supported to meet such aging societies that are getting older. Therefore, I have drawn the elders' needs by investigating their characteristics through literature research and used such needs as a frame of analysis to analyze the bathroom furniture and products made in Korea and foreign countries. The analysis results indicate:First, the elders need entertainment, health care, environment-friendly, convenience, good accessibility, chair-based bath and space separation; second, both Korean-made and foreign-made bathroom products are difficult to be controlled, invisible of font, hard to sustain the elders' bodies, inconvenient to be used and etc; and third, the design to solve such problems should be with intuitive user interface, easy control, better accessibility, the elders' moving patterns and living habits considered, health care, pro-environmental product. This study puts emphasis on the reflection of socio-cultural characteristics in designing bathroom furniture & items for aging society and requires more bathroom products with various designs in the foreseeable future.

  • This study was undertaken to address the difficulties and inconveniences of an electric wheelchair. We focused on improving usability of initially completed products by augmenting the prototypes designed in the previous study. For evaluation of usability, 10 elderly women aged over 65 years, capable of movements and physical activities in daily life, were enrolled as subjects. The experimental method included a subjective satisfaction questionnaire evaluation of the elderly women using the target product, and the observation evaluation was achieved using video recording data, etc. Usability evaluation revealed that the elevating sector requires improvement of intuition through separation of the elevating control panel and the driving control panel. Improvements in the driving sector include corrections of the front wheel mechanism or driving control algorithm, UI, and sudden stop system. Transferring section assessment revealed a necessity to secure structures and add structures that support power. We believe that based on the inconveniences and improvements presented in the usability evaluation, appending the existing prototype with complementary products will improve the quality of life of elderly women with limited mobility.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The body composition changes in aging increased the risk of metabolic disorder. Recent dietary studies have increasingly focused on the correlations between dietary patterns and chronic diseases to overcome the limitations of traditional single-nutrient studies because nutrients in food have complex relations that interact. SUBJECTS/METHODS: This study was conducted to classify a dietary pattern among Korean elderly using cluster analysis and to explore the relationships between dietary patterns and body composition changes in Korean elderly aged 65 years or older. The study subjects (n=1,435) were individuals who participated in the Korean National Health Examination and Nutrition Survey (KNHANES) in 2011. RESULTS: There were three dietary patterns derived by cluster analysis in this study: 'Traditional Korean' (37.49% of total population), 'Meat and Alcohol' (19.65%) and 'Westernized Korean' (42.86%). The (1) 'Traditional Korean' pattern was characterized by high consumptions of white rice and low protein, low fat, and low milk products, while (2) 'Westernized Korean' pattern ate a Korean-style diet base with various foods such as noodles, bread, eggs and milk, (3) 'Meat and Alcohol' pattern had high consumptions of meat and alcohol. In body composition changes, compared with the 'Traditional Korean' pattern, the 'Meat & alcohol' pattern was associated with a 50% increased risk of having elevated BMI ($kg/m^2$), 'Westernized Korean' pattern was associated with a 74% increased abnormality of ASM/Wt (kg) by logistics analysis. Most of the Korean adult population continues to follow ether a traditional Korean having beneficial effects for successful aging. However, the 'Traditional Korean' pattern showed low protein intake (0.7 g/kg), calcium intake, and vitamin D intake as well as low of appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM (kg)) among 3 groups. CONCLUSIONS: Considering the low ASM, consumption of protein, calcium and vitamin D should be increased for Korean elderly health body composition.

The research was conducted on 906 elderly people over 65 living in 20 rural longevity villages through questionnaires assessing filming and economy, economic activity, health care, learning and leisure activities as well as asking their wants and needs relative to local community services. As a result, it was found rural elderly people showed a high desire for local community services such as health, transportation and economy activity. In addition, they were mainly cultivating farm products as their economic activity and showed a high demand in the future as well. Most were found to take a walk in the healthcare field and showed a high demand for health examinations, health education, health consulting, hot spring bathing and basking in the woods. Respecting learning, social and leisure activities, they were mostly found to watch TV and do house chores, and showed a high desire for village environment repair, traditional farm music, visiting and tourism. With the above results, it is expected that the desire of rural elderly for such services can be satisfied, and the development of a local community service network model suitable to the characteristic of a local community is recommended.

  • Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the correlation with subjective oral health status and food preference in elderly people. Methods: Data were extracted from the fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Survey 2010-2012. The survey data included general characteristics of the subjects, food preference, and subjective oral health status. Food preference was analyzed by assigning score to 63 food categories. The subjective oral health status consisted of toothache within a month, self-perception of oral health, chewing difficulty, mastication difficulty, and speaking difficulty. Data were analyzed by frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, ${\chi}^2$ test, t-test, and ANOVA using SPSS 22.0 program. Results: Elderly men had a tendency to have a liking for all food categories except for fruit. Difficulty in chewing and mastication was shown in those who had older age, lower education, lower monthly income, and national basic livelihood security. Difficulty in speaking was found in those who had older age, lower education, and national basic livelihood security. Self perception of oral health status was closely related to food preference for pulses and potatoes, fish, vegetables and others(p<0.05). Difficulties in chewing and mastication had relation to all food categories excepting cereals, lipids and sugars(p<0.05). Speaking difficulty were significantly different in pulses, potatoes, meat, eggs, vegetables, fruits, milk, dairy products, and others(p<0.05). Conclusions: Poor subjective oral health status was closely related to food preference. It is necessary to educate that maintenance of good oral health is to ingest the balanced nutrition in the elderly people.

  • The aim of this investigation was to assess the difference of health behaviors, dietary patterns and nutrient intakes between smokers and nonsmoker from 435 free living elderly in Kyunggi province. The study subjects were interviewed to collect general characteristics and health behaviors such as smoking, exercise, alcohol consumption, and food habits by questionnaires and nutrient intakes by a 24-hour recall, and weight, height, waist, hip, and blood pressure were measured. The percentages of smoker were 52.3% in males and 12.1% in females. Current smokers were fond of alcohol, salty or hot food, tended to have meals irregularly and insufficient sleep, and were inactive lifestyle compared to nonsmokers. Smokers consumed fewer servings of vegetables, fruits, and beans and their products. Women who smoked consumed less energy, carbohydrates, and vitamin E than nonsmokers, and their nutrient adequacy ratio of protein, iron, phosphate, niacin, vitamin B1, and vitamin C were significantly lower than nonsmokers. There were no differences of nutrient intakes and nutrient adequacy ratio between smokers and nonsmokers in male subjects. In conclusion, elderly smokers tended to have less healthy life style, food habit, and dietary nutrient intakes which may influence the deleterious effects of smoke components on cancer and coronary heart disease risk, thus health education program should include nutrition education as well as smoking cessation.

  • This article is a continuing report about a development of disposable diapers for the elderly in need. In previous report, the first prototypes of disposable diapers in two different categories have been developed. One was a panty type and the other was a pad type. These prototypes were results of property test and wear test of existing disposable diapers in each categories. Yet, in order to develop useable products, the second property and wear tests using the first prototype diapers were carried out. Considering the resets of the second tests, enhancements to the first prototypes were made to refine the second prototypes. The panty type diaper were altered to be longer to prevent evacuation from leaking and fit better. The pad type diapers were altered to reduce thickness for comfort and wearing appearance when get dressed. Ultimately a lot more disposable diapers will be required in future. Resulting suggestions are as follows. Anthropometric data around hip area of elderly in both sexes have to be collected to give meaningful information to diaper manufacturers, so that they can manufacture for different sizes and different sexes. Also we suggests that diapers for specific disease such as diabetics have to be designed accordingly.
