  • A modern kinetic evaluation method for nonisothermal reactions measured with Differential Scanning Calorimetry(DSC) is presented. It is based on multiple linear regression analysis using a number of curve points in a selectable range of conversion. The obtained kinetic data are the basis to compute a reaction process under any condition e.g. isothermal or adiabatic. The DSC measurements was performed on a Mettler TA3000 SYSTEM with the built in evaluation software. Mainly the following reactions are discussed: vulcanization of natural rubber compounds containing vulcanizing accelerators. The purpose of this work is to analyse the vulcanization kinetics of typical NR vulcanization systems using DSC. These systems were chosen because they are typically reactive elastomer and are commercially important.

  • A blend ratio of rubber vulcanzates comprising NBR, CR, EPDM, NR, BR, and SBR alone or blended is determind through a P.G.C. It is found that a characteristic peak of elastomer is proportional to the content of each elastomer when they are pyrolysed. It is also classified to the different AN content in NBR vulcanizates, identification of sulfur-modified and non-sulfur bearing CR polymers, and the content of ethylene, propylene monomer and the third monomer in EPDM vulcanizetes.

  • Magneto-rheological elastomers (MREs) are smart materials in which the inherent stiffness and damping properties can be changed by the influence of an external magnetic field. The magneto-rheological (MR) effect depends on the orientation characteristics of the dispersed magneto-responsible particles (MRPs) in the matrix. In this study, natural rubber (NR) and ethylene propylene diene rubber (EPDM) were blended and used as a matrix of an MRE. EPDM was pre-cured before blending with NR. The Mooney viscosity, curing characteristics, and mechanical properties were analyzed with various pre-curing conditions of EPDM and the NR/EPDM blend. The results show that excellent mechanical properties of the NR/EPDM blend-based MRE were obtained when the pre-curing time of EPDM was 60 min. The aging property of the NR-based MRE was improved by the introduction of pre-cured EPDM. Also, the anisotropic MRE showed a higher MR effect than that of the isotropic MRE.

  • This study examined the effects of the addition of maleic anhydride-grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MA) and polyolefin elastomer (POE) on polyamide 66 (PA66) and polypropylene (PP) blends. The blends of PA66/PP with PP-g-MA and POE were prepared using a twin screw extruder. Mechanical testing results revealed that the tensile, flexural, and izod impact strengths of the blends were maximized at a PP-g-MA content of 2 phr. The increased mechanical strength of the blends with PP-g-MA was attributed to the compatibilizing effect of the PA66 and PP blends. In addition, as the POE content increased, the impact strength of the blends increased. However, at a high POE content, the tensile and flexural strengths decreased, seemingly because of the lower mechanical properties of POE.

  • The research and development of high-performance polymer materials with excellent gas barrier properties has gained considerable attention from the viewpoint of expanding their applications in various fields, including tire automobile parts and the polymer film industry. Natural rubber (NR) has been widely used as a rubber material in real-life, but its application is limited owing to its poor gas barrier properties. In this paper, we study the gas barrier properties of NR, epoxidized natural rubber (ENR), and their blend compositions by using molecular simulation. The results show that ENR-50 has superior oxygen barrier properties than those of NR. Moreover, the oxygen barrier properties of a blend of NR/ENR-50 improve with increasing volume fraction of ENR-50. The trend of improved oxygen barrier properties of NR, ENR-50, and their blend is in good agreement with experimental observations.

  • Elastomers based on the thermoplastics are widely used in rubber industries. Thermoplastic elastomers have the advantages of an easy shaping process and elimination of recycling problems. Thermoplastic polyester elastomer (TPE) is used for making rubber bands in wearable devices and its applications are increasing. In this study, five wrist bands were designed and their mechanical behaviors were examined by computer simulation, using hyper elastic models, Mooney-Rivlin and Ogden models, and a linear elastic model. Simulation results were compared and discussed in terms of band design and material model.

  • In this work, the surface of inorganic fillers were modified with some functional groups such as stearic acid, aliphatic long chain, vinylsilane and aminosilane to control the interaction between inorganic fillers and polymer matrix. Ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers (EVA) with various amount of vinyl-acetate content and copolyether-ester elastomer were used as polymer matrix. The addition of inorganic fillers increases flame retardancy, but results in steep drop of electrical and mechanical properties, which may be caused by the defect in the interface between organic/inorganic hybrid composites. The hybrid composites are found to show better mechanical properties and higher volume resistivities as inorganic fillers are well dispersed and have good adhesion with polymer matrix. Also, the most effective type of functional group coated on fillers depends on the chemical structure of polymer.

  • The effect of electrochemical surface treatments in KOH chemical solution on microstructures of carbon blacks was investigated in terms of surface functional values and XRD measurements. And their mechanical interfacial properties of the carbon blacks/rubber composites were studied by the composite tearing energy ($G_{IIIC}$). It was found that the development of basic-surface functional groups lead to the significant physical changes of carbon blacks, such as, decrease of the interlayer spacing ($d_{002}$), increase of the crystalline size along c-axis ($L_c$), and increase of degree of crystalline (${\chi}_c$). This treatment is possibly suitable for carbon blacks to be incorporated in a hydrocarbon rubber matrix, resulting in improving the hardness and tearing energy of the resulting composites.

  • In this study, thermoplastic composites were manufactured using ABS(acrylonitrile butadiene styrene), PC(polycarbonate), and POE(polyolefin elastomer), which are thermoplastic plastics. Twin screw extruder and injection molding were used to manufacture thermoplastic composites. When the ABS/PC/POE thermoplastic composite material was manufactured, the POE mass fraction was set to 1 to 5 wt.%, and the thermal and mechanical properties according to the POE mass fraction were analyzed. Based on the physical properties of ABS/PC/POE, a 3D model in the form of an e-bike frame was created. After setting the boundary conditions, when an external load is applied, geometry simulation was performed to predict product performance. The ABS/PC/POE thermoplastic composite material exhibited the best physical properties when the mass fraction of POE was 3 wt.%. In the simulation results for the physical properties of the 3D model in the form of an e-bike frame, the best physical properties were shown when the mass fraction of POE was 2 ~ 3 wt.%. As a result, the manufacturing conditions for ABS/PC/POE thermoplastic composite materials were set, and research was conducted to reduce product development costs and development time.

  • In this study, as one of the developing ways of the functional elastomer, improvement of the functionality of CB-BR was attempted through moisture curing reaction. The curing reaction of CB-BR was determined with an use of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane(APS) as a crosslinking agent, also a solution reaction with an active chlorine of CB-BR was elucidated by using a reaction kinetics theory and a study of physical property was made through moisture curing on the compound of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane and CB-BR The results of this study obtained are as follows : 1) CB-BR reacted easily with APS in the liquid state and the reaction rate coefficient and activation energy were as follows : 2) Optimum pressure condition of moisture cured elastomer(CB-BR+APS) was 20 minutes at $150^{\circ}C$, and the crosslinked elastomer was close to the theoretical value (q=1) for Flory's equation($\frac{\alpha}{\alpha-1}=q{\nu}RT$)
