  • The flexural behavior of HSB I-girder with a non-slender web attributed to inelastic lateral-torsional buckling under uniform bending was investigated using nonlinear finite element analysis of ABAQUS. The girder was assumed to have a compact or noncompact web in order to prevent premature bend-buckling of the web. The unbraced length of the girder was selected so that inelastic lateral-torsional buckling governs the ultimate flexural strength. The compression flange was also assumed to be either compact or noncompact to prevent local buckling of the elastic flange. Both homogeneous sections fabricated from HSB600 or HSB800 steel and hybrid sections with HSB800 flanges and SM570-TMC web were considered. In the FE analysis, the flanges and web of I-girder were modeled as thin shell elements. Initial imperfections and residual stresses were imposed on the FE model. An elasto-plastic strain hardening material was assumed for steel. After establishing the validity of the present FE analysis by comparing FE results with test results in existing literature, the effects of initial imperfection and residual stress on the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling behavior were analyzed. Finite element analysis results for 96 sections demonstrated that the current inelastic strength equations for the compression flange in AASHTO LTFD can be applied to predict the inelastic lateral torsional buckling strength of homogeneous and hybrid HSB I-girders with a non-slender web.

  • The ultimate flexural strength of HSB I-girders, considering the effect of local bucking, was investigated through a series of nonlinear finite element analysis. The girders were selected such that the inelastic local flange buckling or the plastic yielding of compression flanges governs the flexural strength. Both homogeneous sections fabricated from HSB600 or HSB800 steel and hybrid sections with HSB800 flanges and SM570-TMC web were considered. In the FE analysis, the flanges and web were modeled using thin shell elements and initial imperfections and residual stresses were imposed on the FE model. An elasto-plastic strain hardening material was used for steels. After establishing the validity of present FE analysis by comparing FE results with test results published in the literature, the effects of initial imperfection and residual stress on the inelastic flange local buckling behavior were assessed. The ultimate flexural strengths of 60 I-girders with various compression flange slenderness were obtained by FE analysis and compared with those calculated from the KHBDC, AASHTO LRFD and Eurocode 3 provisions. Based on the comparison, the applicability of design equations in these specifications for the flexural strength of I-girder considering flange local buckling was evaluated.

  • Effect of joints which pre-exist in the rock mass on the behavior of underground structures is studied. A finite element program is developed using a constitutive mode for rock masses exhibiting nonlinear anisotropic behavior. The initial loading scheme combined with reduced region of analysis is employed to minimize the problem size. A circular tunnel within rock mass is analyzed and the results are compared with those of elasto-plastic analysis to verify that the program is reasonable. The effect of joint direction is also analyzed in regard to stress relaxation, displacement, and deformation shape. It is concluded that the joint direction has significant influence on the nonlinear behavior of rock masses such that the vicinity of tunnel perpendicular to the direction of the joints is stressed to slide. It is also observed that the circular shape deforms to an elliptical shape with a major axis in the joint direction.

  • Focusing on the bench length, this paper presents the results of 3-dimensional elafto-plastic FE Analysis un tunnels of full face, mini-bench and short bench excavated in weathered rock. Influences of unsupported span, horizontal to vertical stress ratio, thickness of shotcrete on the behavior of rock and support were a1so studied. Results showed that displacements of mini-bench tunnels responded more sensitively to bench lengths than those of short bench. The effects of bench excavation on upper half displacement increased with longer unsupported span. Horizontal to vertical stress ratio showed a greater influence on displacement and preceding displacement ratio or sidewall rather than those of crown and invert.

  • Welding is a important technological method in mechanical engineering. $CO_2$MAG(metal active gas) welding means that metal part in double capstan drum for the inshore and costal vessels are joined by melting(with or without a filler material) or that new material is added to a metal part by melting. The thermal stresses appear due to a non-uniform temperature field, inhomogeneous material properties, external restraint and volume changes during phase transformations. In this study analysis the elasto-plastic thermal stresses distribution of welding part in double capstan drum for the inshore and costal vessels using finite element method (FBM). Therefore it calculates the numerical value that can be applied to the optimum design of welding parts and the shapes. The significant results obtained in this study are summarized as fellows. At early stage of the cooling after welding process, the abrupt thermal stresses gradient has been shown in the vicinity of welding part. In the thermal stresses analysis due to temperature gradient and heat shocking maximum stress was occurred of welding part and stresses were distributed from 54MPa~48MPa.

  • Elastic and elasto-plastic stress analyses of AlN/Cu and AlN/W pints produced by active-metal brazing method using Ag-Cu-Ti insert-metal were performed with use of Finite-Element-Method(FEM). The results of stress analyses were compared with those from the pint strength tests and the observations of fracture behaviors. It was shown that a remarkably larger maximum principal stress is built in the AlN/Cu pint compared to the A1N/ W joint. Especially, the stress concentration with tensile component was confirmed at the free surface close to the bonded interface of AlN/Cu. The elasto-plastic analysis under consideration of stress relaxation effect of Ag-Cu-Ti insert possessing a so-called 'soft-metal effect' showed that the insert leads to a lowering of maximum principal stress in AlNiCu pint, even though an increase of the insert thickness above 100$\mu\textrm{m}$ could not bring its further decrease. The maximum pint strengths measured by shear test were 52 and 108 MPa for AlNiCu and AlN/W pints. respectively. Typical fractures of AlN/Cu pints occurred in a form of 'dome' which initiated from the free surface of AlN close to the bonded interface and proceeded towards the AlN inside forming a large angle. AlN/W pints were usually fractured at AlN side along the interface of AlN/insert-metal.

  • In a companion paper. (Oh, 2002), the constitutive model, called GUX model, was implemented as a user subroutine in ABAQUS code, where the GUX model could describe the behavior of overall strain range. An accuracy analysis verified that the implicit stress integration maintained the accuracy of solutions successfully. Since the GUX model is an anistropic hardening elasto-plastic constitutive model based on total stress concept, geotechnical problems under fully drained or undrained condition can be analyzed after acquisition of stress-strain relationships from drained or undrained triaxial tests. This study includes the analyses of the stability of embankments on soft clays and weathered soils and the example of axially loaded soil-pile system. In the large deformation analyses, geometric nonlinearity was considered and the result of analyses with GUX model was compared with that of Mises model for the overall strain range behavior.

  • The aim of this paper is to design the blank shape of SPFH 590 high strength steel for stamping of the center hinge of automotive via numerical analyses and experiments for multi-stages transfer forming process. Three-dimensional elasto-plastic finite element analyses for the transfer forming process with six stages were performed using a commercial code AUTOFORM V4.2. The influence of the blank shape on the formability and the shape conformity were quantitatively examined through the FE analyses. From the results of the FE analysis, a feasible shape of the blank and the forming load were estimated. Stamping experiments were carried out using the proposed blank shape. The results of experiments were shown that the center hinge parts with the desired shapes can be manufactured successfully as the proposed blank shape is used. Through the comparison of the results of the experiments with those of the analyses, it was shown that the estimation of blank shape using the FE analysis is a proper methodology to create a feasible shape of the blank for the center hinge of automotive.

  • Roll-to-roll forming process is one of important metal processing technology because the process is simple and economical. These days, with these merits, roll-to-roll forming process is tried to be employed in manufacturing the circuit board, barrier ribs and solar cell plate. The solar cell plate may have millions of patterns, and the analysis of forming considering all the patterns is impossible due to the computational costs. In this study, analyses are carried out for various numbers of patterns and the results are compared. It is shown that the analyses results with four row patterns and twelve row patterns are same. So, it is considered that the analysis can be carried out for only four rows of pattern for the design of incremental roll-to-roll forming process. Also formability is analysed for various number of mesh, protrusion shapes and forming temperature.

  • Springback is a common phenomenon in sheet metal forming, caused by the elastic recovery of the internal stresses after removal of the tooling. Recently, advanced high strength steels (AHSS) such as TRIP and DP are finding acceptance in the automotive industry because their superior strength to weight ratio can lead to improved fuel efficiency and assessed crashworthiness of vehicles. The major troubles of the automotive structural members stamped with high strength steel sheets are the tendency of the large amount of springback due to the high yield strength and the tensile strength. The amount of springback is mainly influenced by the type of the yield function and anisotropic model induced by rolling. The discrepancy of the deep drawn product comparing the data of from the product design induced by springback must be compensated at the tool design stage in order to guarantee its function and assembly with other parts. The methodology of compensation of the low shape accuracy induced by large amount of springback is developed by the expert engineer in the industry. Recently, the numerical analysis is introduced in order to predict the amount of springback and to improve the shape accuracy prior to tryout stage of press working. In this paper, the tendency of springback is evaluated with respect to the blank material. The stamping process is analyzed fur the front side member formed with AHSS sheets such as TRIP60 and DP60. The analysis procedure fully covers the binderwrap, stamping, trimming and springback process with the commercial elasto-plastic finite element code LS-DYNA3D.
