  • Until recently, almost all ETFE film structures that have been erected is the cushion type because there are problems at lower allowable strength under elastic range and viscosity behaviour such as creep and relaxation of ETFE films under long-term stresses. But the number of tension type structures is currently increasing. This paper proposes the stretch fabrication of ETFE film to verify the applicability of ETFE films to tensile membrane structures. First of all, to investigate the possibility of application on tensile membrane structures, the stretch fabrication test is carried out, and it is verified that it is possible to increase the yield strength of the film membrane structures. After simulating the experiment also carries out an analytical investigation, and the effectiveness of the elasto-plastic analysis considering the viscous behavior of the film is investigated. Finally, post-aging tension measurement is conducted at the experimental facilities, and the viscosity behavior resulting from relaxation is investigated with respect to tensile membrane structures.

  • Dual pulse rocket motor is a solid motor with two grains separated by a bulkhead and rupture disc. The elasto-plastic explicit dynamic analysis for the rupture disc was conducted by finite element method. The effect of the slit geometry of a rupture disc was parametrically analyzed in terms of rupture time and shape. The results can be used to control the rupture pressure by changing the slit geometry of rupture disc.

  • The objective of this paper is to find out a reasonable method for docking analysis of ships. The characteristics of reaction force distribution under docking condition are investigated by carrying out parametric study. To assess the allowable reaction force on keel block from structural strength point of view, two kinds of structural assessment methods are proposed in accordance with expected collapse pattern. In order to verify the proposed method, linear buckling and elasto-plastic large deflection analyses of typical double bottom structure are carried out and the results are compared.

  • A procedure for figuring out proper amount of additional viscous damping required to keep the inelastic deformation of a plan-wise asymmetric structure within a given target performance point was developed. To this end the behavior of an asymmetric nonlinear structure after yielding is investigated. Then a formula for the required amount of equivalent damping was derived based on the ductility demand of the structure. The procedure was applied to a five-story asymmetric structure subjected to an earthquake load. According to the comparison with the results from the dynamic time-history analysis, the structure with viscous dampers installed in accordance with the proposed procedure showed satisfactory seismic performance in both the stiff and the flexible edges.

  • Optimization is carried out to determine process parameters which reduce the amount of springback and improve shape accuracy of a deep drawn product in sheet metal forming process. The study uses the amount of stress deviation along the thickness direction in the deep drawn product as an indicator of springback instead of springback simulation. The scheme incorporates with an explicit elasto-plastic finite element method for calculation of the final shape and the stress deviation. The optimization method adopts the response surface method in order to seek for the optimum condition of the draw-bead force. The present scheme is applied to the design of draw-bead force in a front side member formed with advanced high strength steel (AHSS) sheets of DP60. Results show that design of process parameter is well performed to decrease the stress deviation through the thickness and to reduce the amount of springback. The present analysis provides a guideline in a design stage for controlling the springback based on the finite element simulation of the complicated parts.

  • Particles reinforced MMCs have many advantages over monolithic metals including a higher specific modulus, higher specific strength, better properties at elevated temperatures and better wear resistance. SiC$_p$/A16061 composites have good results in its mechanical properties. This work investigates SiC$_p$/A16061 composites in the microscopic view and compares the analytical results with the experimental ones. The discrepancy of the material properties between the reinforced particle, SiC$_p$, and the matrix material, A16061 appears to be so significant. Especially the coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE) of A16061 is 5 times larger than that of SiC$_p$. Thermal residual stress in MMCs is induced at high temperatures. The shape of particle is various but the theoretical model is not able to consider the nonuniform shape. Particle distribution is not homogeneous in experimental specimen. However, it is assumed to be homogeneous in simulation model. The shapes of particles are assumed to be not only perfect global but hexahedral shapes. The types of particle distribution are two - simple cubic array(SC array) and face-centered cubic array(FCC array).

  • An elastic-plasticity model during the austenitic decomposition was derived and implemented to incorporate the two important deformation behaviors observed during the phase transformations: the volumetric strain and transformation induced plasticity due to the temperature change and phase transformation. To obtain transformed phase volume fractions during cooling, the fourth order Runge-Kutta method was used to solve the Kirkaldy's phase kinetics model which is function of temperature, austenitic grain size and chemical composition. The volumetric strain was calculated by considering the densities of constituent phases, while the transformation induced plasticity was based on the micro-plasticity due to the volume mismatch between soft austenitic phase and other harder phases. The constitutive equations were implemented into the implicit finite element software and a simple boundary value problem was chosen as a model problem to validate the effect of transformation plasticity on the deformation behavior of steel under cooling from high temperature. It was preliminary concluded that the transformation plasticity plays a critical role in relaxing the developed stress during forming and thus reducing the magnitude of springback.

  • Effects of circumferentially local wall thinning on the fracture behavior of pipes were investigated by monotonic four-point bending. Local wall thinning was machined on the pipes in order to simulate erosion/corrosion metal loss. The configurations of the eroded area included an eroded ratio of d/t= 0.2, 0.5, 0.6, and 0.8, and an eroded length of I = 10 mm, 25 mm, and 120 mm. Fracture type could be classified into ovalization, local buckling, and crack initiation depending on the eroded length and eroded ratio. Three-dimensional elasto-plastic analyses were also carried out using the finite element method, which is able to accurately simulate fracture behaviors excepting failure due to cracking. It was possible to predict the crack initiation point by estimating true fracture ductility under multi-axial stress conditions at the center of the eroded area.

  • Interaction between an unlined tunnel may cause a serious stability both the tunnel and the overlying and unli Red tunnel interaction meta study on the three dimensional bets a three dimensional elasto plastic the program, a wide range of blur puter analysis such as stress distr menu and tunnel deformation were footing and unlined tunnel. The yes traces the ultimate bearing capacity only on the tunnel size and location revealed is that an unlined tunnel under a square footing is subjected to three dimensional stress pattern along the tunnel axis, and that the magnitudes of stresses in the foundation soil and around tunnel perimeter are considerably smaller when loaded with a square than with a strip footings and the difference varies with the location and the type of stress. It is also revealed that the footing failure mechanism varies with the degree of footing and tunnel interaction.

  • Bi-directional load test is one of O-cell tests. The O-cell test is a system which may be used for performing static load tests on cast in situ reinforced concrete bored piles. The technique was devised and developed by Osterberg of Northwestern University(USA) and has been in use around the world. The principle of the method is that an O-cell is installed in a cast in situ bored pile base. Once the pile concrete reaches its design strength the cell is connected to an hydraulic pump and pressured. Pressurisation causes the cell to expand, developing an upward force on the section of pile above the cell loads, pile movements and strains within the pile then enable the capacity of the pile and its load settlement curves to be ascertained. Bi-directional load tests using O-cell are now becoming common practice around the world, particularly where the loads to be applied are high or where it is not convenient to perform top-down loading tests. In the study, calculate ultimate capacity of bi-directional load test using FEM and beam on elasto-plastic foundation theory.
