  • Residual stresses and thermal deformation of a structure due to welding are very imfortant factors for a weld design. It has been carried therretical analysis to invesitigate influence of heat flux to residual stresses and thermal deformation producted by curcumferential welding. Temperature, stresses and deformationn are obtain as a function of circumferentisl drgree and distance from welding center line. These result can applicate to predict and remove the deformation or residual stresses built up by welding.

  • Total stress analysis method and nonlinear constitutive models have been used to analyze a dynamic performance of Dams but, there is some limitation in analysis, for example, effects of build up of pore pressure and generations of permanent deformations. Therefore considering these limitations, which is mentioned before, dynamic behavior characteristics of dams and response acceleration characteristics was analyzed in time domain, applying an elasto-plastic constitutive model and effective analysis method.

  • An elasto-plastic finite element procedure using degenerated shell element with assumed strain field technique considering both material and geometric nonlinearities has been developed. This assumes von-Mises yield criterion, von-Karman strain displacement relations and isotropic hardening. A few numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the correctness and applicability of the method to different kinds of engineering problems. From present study, it is seen that there is a considerable improvement in the displacement valuse when both material and geometric nonlinearities are considered. An example of the spread of plastic zones for isotropic and anisotropic materials has been illustrated.

  • In the present study, two-dimensional plane deformation thermo elasto-plastic analysis has been carried out, in order to investigate the thermal and mechanical behaviour (residual stress, plastic strain, magnitude of stress and their distribution and production mechanism) on multi-pass FCA butt weldment of high strength EH36-TMCP ultra thick plate. Moreover, this study can be considered as a basis for analysing the fracture toughness, KIC, and its effect on welding residual stress redistribution with notch on multi-pass FCA butt weldment, in future. The results of welding residual stress obtained from thermo elasto-plastic analysis has been compared and verified with the results measured by XRD.

  • In this study, a numerical analysis was performed to predict the sequential behavior of anchored retaining wall where the failure accident took place, and verified accuracy of prediction through the comparisons between prediction and field measurement. The emphasis was given to the wall behaviors and the variation of sliding surface based on the two different methods of elasto-plastic and finite element (shear strength reduction technique). Through the comparison study, it is shown that the bending moment and the soil pressure at construction stages produce quite similar results in both the elasto-plastic and finite element method. However, predicted wall deflections using elasto-plastic method show underestimate results compared with measured deflections. This demonstrates that the elasto-plastic method does not clearly consider the influence of soil-wall-reinforcement interaction, so that the tension force (anchor force and earth pressure) on the wall is overestimated. Based on the results obtained, it is found that finite element method using shear strength reduction method can be effectively used to perform the back calculation analysis in the anchored retaining wall, whereas elasto-plastic method can be applicable to the preliminary design of retaining wall with suitable safety factor.

  • Recently, the finite element method has been sucessfully extended to treat the rather complex phenomena such as nonlinear buckling problems which are of considerable practical interest. In this study, a finite element program to evaluate the elasto-plastic buckling stress is developed. The Stowell's deformation theory for the plastic buckling of flat plates, which is in good agreement with experimental results, is used to evaluate bending stiffness matrix. A bifurcation analysis is performed to compute the elasto-plastic buckling stress. The subspace iteration method is employed to find the eigenvalues. The results are compared with corresponding exact solutions to the governing equations presented by Stowell and also with experimental data due to Pride. The developed program is applied to obtain elastic and elasto-plastic buckling stresses for various loading cases. The effect of different plate aspect ratio is also investigated.

  • The application of friction stir welding (FSW) technology has been extended to all industries, including shipbuilding. A heat transfer analysis evaluates the weldability of a welded work piece, and elasto-plastic analysis predicts the residual stress and deformation after welding. A thermal elasto-plastic analysis based on the heat transfer analysis results is most frequently used today. However, its application to large objects such as offshore structures and hulls is impractical owing to its long computational time. This paper proposes a new method, namely an equivalent strain method using the inherent strain, to overcome the disadvantages of the extended analysis time. In the present study, a residual stress analysis of FSW was performed using this equivalent strain method. Additionally, in order to reflect the external constraints in FSW, the reaction force was predicted using a neural network, Finally, the approach was verified by comparing the experimental results and thermal elasto-plastic analysis results for the calculated residual stress distribution.

  • For the precise assessment of the effect of welding residual stresses on structural strength and fatigue crack growth behavior, new FE analysis algorithms for the estimation of residual stress relaxation due to external load and redistribution due to fatigue crack propagation were proposed in this paper. Initial welding residual stress field was obtained by thermal elasto-plastic analysis considering temperature dependent material properties, and the amount of residual stress relaxation and redistribution were assessed by subsequent elasto-plastic analysis In the analysis of fatigue crack propagation, the applied SIF(Stress Intensity Factor) range was evaluated by $\frac{1}{4}$-point displacement extrapolation method, and the effect of welding residual stresses on crack propagation was considered by introducing the effective SIF concept. The test results of crack propagations were compared with the predicted data obtained by the analysis.
