  • This paper reported a study on the thermal, mechanical and electrical insulation properties of epoxy/mica composites. To investigate the effect of mica content, glass transition temperature, mechanical properties such as tensile and flexural strength, and insulation breakdown properties for epoxy composites with various contents of mica. The effect of insulation thickness on insulation breakdown property was also studied. It was observed that tensile and flexural strength decreased with increasing mica content, while elastic modulus increased as the mica content increased. AC insulation breakdown strength for all epoxy/mica composites was higher than that of neat epoxy and that of the system with 20 wt% mica was 14.4% improved. As was expected, insulation breakdown strength at $30^{\circ}C$ was far higher than that at $130^{\circ}C$, and it was also found that insulation breakdown strength was inversely proportion to insulation thickness.

  • The effective elastic properties of materials containing spherical inclusions were calculated by the elastic wave scattering theory. In the formulation additional scattering fields by the presence of random multiple scatterers that affects the effective properties were found by the single scattering approximation. In calculating the scattering fields the ensemble average on the displacements and strains inside the scatterer was found from the static approximation at long wavelength limit. The displacements were assumed to be equal to the incident field, while the strains were calculated by Eshelby's equivalent inclusion principle on the single inclusion problem. Four different models were considered and they reflected different degrees of multiple scattering effects based on the approximation introduced in the process of embedding the inclusion in the matrix. The expressions for the effective elastic constants were given in each model, and their relations to the results obtained from other scattering theory and elasticity theory were discussed. The theoretical predictions were compared with experimental results on the epoxy matrix composites containing tungsten particles of different sizes and volume fractions

  • In this paper, we investigated electrical property of epoxy resin which includes elastomers to improve electrical and mechanical property, as varied to additive elastomer contents. There are four samples with 5[phr], 10[phr], 15[phr] and 20[phr]. We meIt was experimented with changing temperature($-80^{\circ}C{\sim}50^{\circ}C$) and frequency (10Hz, 60Hz, 1kHz, 10kHz) According to the experimental results, when the additive elastomer contents are increasing, the permittivity and tan${\delta}$ has very high value in particular at low frequency and high temperature. It also appears that those increasing rates relate to additive elastomer contents. That is to say, even though epoxy resin are improved in mechanical property according to elastomer contents, the elastic epoxy can has bad dielectric characteristics for electrical power application.

  • This work is to fabricate a precise optical fiber array using polymer composite for optical interconnection. Optical fiber array has to satisfy low optical loss requirement less than 0.4 dB according to temperature change. For this purpose, design criteria for an optical fiber array was derived. The coefficient of thermal expansion of silica particulate epoxy composites was affected by volume fraction of silica particles. And also, elastic modulus of silica particulate epoxy composites was affected by volume fraction of silica particles. To obtain the coefficients of thermal expansion below $10{\times}10E-6/^{\circ}C$ and elastic modulus more than 20 GPa , we chose the volume fraction more than 76%. Using silica particulate epoxy composites with the volume fraction 76%, 8-channel optical fiber array with dimensional tolerances below $1\;{\mu}m$ was manufactured by transfer molding technique using dies with the uniquely-designed core pin and precisely-machined zirconia ceramic V block. These optical fiber arrays showed optical loss variations within 0.4 dB under thermal cycling test and high temperature test.

  • Applications of composite materials have been in progress noticeably in manufacturing areas of automotive, aircraft and in other industries, resulting in ensuing research activities. Carbon-epoxy, one of major composite materials, is investigated for its thermal characteristics. Upon treatments of the composite material with repeated heatings and coolings variations of its elastic constants are monitored to reveal the thermal nature of the composite material. In this study, generally, changes in elastic constants are observed to occur mostly during the first 10~20 thermal cycles. Values of G(sub)13 remain almost unchanged except a minor decrease. However in the observed small changes thermal shocks produce less effect than thermal fatigues. On the other hand, values of $E_1$show gradual increases with the num-ber of applied thermal cycles and temperatures. Meanwhile, values of $E_2$ and G(sub)23 decrease to a certain extent in the early stage during the applications of thermal cycling but are not appreciable affected by frequencies of thermal cy-cles. Also, thermal shocks are observed to induce different effects depending on treatment temperatures.

  • Clay soils have a big potential to become contaminated with the oil derivatives because they cover a vast area of the earth. The oil derivatives diffusion in the soil lead to soil contamination and changes the physical and mechanical properties of the soil specially clay soils. Soil stabilization by using new material is very important for geotechnical engineers in order to improve the engineering properties of the soil. The main subjects of this research are a- to investigate the effect of the cement and epoxy resin mixtures on the stabilization and on the mechanical parameters as well as the microstructural properties of clay soils contaminated with gasoline and kerosene, b- study on the phenomenon of clay concrete development. Practical engineering indexes such as Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS), elastic modulus, toughness, elastic and plastic strains are all obtained during the course of experiments and are used to determine the optimum amount of additives (cement and epoxy resin) to reach a practical stabilization method. Microstructural tests were also conducted on the specimens to study the changes in the nature and texture of the soil. Results obtained indicated that by adding epoxy resin to the contaminated soil specimens, the strength and deformational properties are increased from 100 to 1500 times as that of original soils. Further, the UCS of some stabilized specimens reached 40 MPa which exceeded the strength of normal concrete. It is interesting to note that, in contrast to the normal concrete, the strength and deformational properties of such stabilized specimens (including UCS, toughness and strain at failure) are simultaneously increased which further indicate on suitability and applicability of the current stabilization method. It was also observed that increasing cement additive to the soil has negligible effect on the contaminated soils stabilized by epoxy resin. In addition, the epoxy resin showed a very good and satisfactory workability for the weakest and the most sensitive soils contaminated with oil derivatives.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the strength and durability properties of modified epoxy composites with waste tire chip, recycled coarse aggregate, filler and modified epoxy to improve elongation and elasticity of epoxy. Additionally, for comparing to modified epoxy and unsaturated polyester resin as a binder, unsaturated polyester resin composites were developed in the same condition. The mix proportions were determined to satisfy the requirement for the workability and slump according to aggregate size and binder content. Tests for the compressive and flexural strength, freezing and thawing and durability for 20 % sulfuric solution were performed. The compressive and flexural strength of modified epoxy composites were in the range of 34.9~61.6 MPa and 10.2~18.3 MPa at the curing 7 days, respectively. Also, the compressive and flexural strength of unsaturated polyester resin composites were in the range of 44.2~77.8 MPa and 11.3~20.8 MPa at the curing 7 days, respectively. After 300 cycles of freezing and thawing, weight decrease ratio and durability factor of modified epoxy composites were in the range of 0.8~1.9 % and 95~98, respectively. Accordingly, modified epoxy composites will greatly improve the durability of concrete.

  • In the present study, we investigated the effects or hydrostatic pressure and stacking sequence on the elastic work factor to determine compressive fracture toughness of graphite/epoxy laminated composites in the hydrostatic pressure environment. The stacking sequences used were unidirectional. $\textrm{[}0^{\circ}\textrm{]}_{88}$ and multi-directional, $\textrm{[}0^{\circ}/\pm/45^{\circ}/90^{\circ}\textrm{]}_{11s}$. The hydrostatic pressures applied for a $\textrm{[}0^{\circ}\textrm{]}_{88}$ case were 0.1 MPa, 70MPa, 140MPa. and 200MPa. The hydrostatic pressures applied for a $\textrm{[}0^{\circ}/\pm/45^{\circ}/90^{\circ}\textrm{]}_{11s}$ case were 0.1MPa, 100MPa, 200MPa, and 300MPa. It was found that the elastic work factor was not affected by the hydrostatic pressure and the stacking sequence. Also, it was found that the elastic work factor decreased in a linear fashion with delamination length.

  • The chemorheological changes and kinetics during curing reaction of an silica filled epoxy system (DGEBA with curing agent Polyxoypropylenediamine) were investigated. This study concentrates on the influence of silica on the reaction kinetics and rheological behavior of the eopxy system. The concentration of the filler was varied 0~200phr. Curing behavior of the silica filled epoxy system was measured at various heating rates with DSC. Conversion was also measured by integrating the obtained DSC curve and Kinetic parameters measured by using the nonlinear regression method. DSC experiments showed that the presence of silica was found to accelerate the progress of the curing reaction and of reduce the heat of reaction compared with that of unfilled epoxy systems . Rheological experiments were conducted on a Physica by using a disposable parallel plate fixture. Material properites were measured such as the elastic modulus(G′), the loss modulus(G"), the loss tangent(tan $\delta$), and the viscosity was at the initial stahe, and the more the silica filler was added, and the lower the gel temperature was in the epoxy system. In this study it is concluded that the curing of the silica filled epoxy system was found to be accelerated, as silica was added to the epoxy compound.
