We analyze the buckling of a thin elastic plate due to intrinsic stresses in thin films attached to the surfaces of the plate. In the case of cylindrical buckling, it is shown that for a plate with clamped edges compressive intrinsic film stresses can cause flexural buckling of the plate, while tensile intrinsic film stresses cannot. For a plate with free edges, film intrinsic stresses, compressive or tensile, cannot cause buckling.
This study contributes to evaluate multiphase topology optimization design of plate-like structures on elastic foundations by using classic plate theory. Multi-material optimal topology and shape are produced as an alternative to provide reasonable material assignments based on stress distributions. Multi-material topology optimization problem is solved through an alternative active-phase algorithm with Gauss-Seidel version as an optimization model of optimality criteria. Stiffness and adjoint sensitivity formulations linked to thin plate potential strain energy are derived in terms of multiphase design variables and Winkler-Pasternak parameters considering elastic foundation to apply to the current topology optimization. Numerical examples verify efficiency and diversity of the present topology optimization method of elastic thin plates depending on multiple materials and Winkler-Pasternak parameters with the same amount of volume fraction and total structural volume.

The structural modes driven by the low wave-number components of smooth elastic wall pressure provide a relatively weak coupling between the flow and the wall motion. If the elastic thin plate has any resonant mode whose wave-number of resonance coincides with $\omega$/U$\sub$c/, the power will be transmitted to those modes of vibration by the flows. We examine the problem in which the elastic thin plate is subject to pressure fluctuations under turbulent boundary layer. Measurements are presented of the frequency spectra of the near- and far-field pressures and radiated sound contributed by the various wave modes of the thin elastic plate. Dispersion equation for wave motions of elastic plate is used to investigate the effect of bending waves of relatively low wave number on radiated sound. The low wave-number motion of elastic plate is observed to have much less influence on the low-frequency energy of wall pressure fluctuations than that of the rediated sound. High amplitude events of the wall pressure are observed to weakly couple with high-frequency energy of radiated sound for case of low tension applied to the plate. The sound source localization is applied to the measurement of radiated sound by using acoustic mirror system.
A four-noded plate bending quadrilateral (PBQ4) and an eight-noded plate bending quadrilateral (PBQ8) element based on Mindlin plate theory have been adopted for modeling the thick plates on elastic foundations using Winkler model. Transverse shear deformations have been included, and the stiffness matrices of the plate elements and the Winkler foundation stiffness matrices are developed using Finite Element Method based on thick plate theory. A computer program is coded for this purpose. Various loading and boundary conditions are considered, and examples from the literature are solved for comparison. Shear locking problem in the PBQ4 element is observed for small value of subgrade reaction and plate thickness. It is noted that prevention of shear locking problem in the analysis of the thin plate is generally possible by using element PBQ8. It can be concluded that, the element PBQ8 is more effective and reliable than element PBQ4 for solving problems of thin and thick plates on elastic foundations.
An isogeometric approach is presented for static analysis of thin plate problems of various geometries. Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS) basis function is applied for approximation of the thin plate deflection, as for description of the geometry. The governing equation based on Kirchhoff plate theory, is discretized using the standard Galerkin method. The essential boundary conditions are enforced by the Lagrange multiplier method. Several typical examples of thin plate and thin plate on elastic foundation are solved and compared with the theoretical solutions and other numerical methods. The numerical results show the robustness and efficiency of the proposed approach.
The use of high tensile steel plates is increasing in the fabrication of ship and offshore structures. The main portion of ship structure is usually composed of stiffened plates. In these structures, plate buckling is one of the most important design criteria and buckling load may usually be obtained as an eigenvalue solution of the governing equations for the plate. To use the high tensile steel plate effectively, its thickness may become thin so that the occurrence of buckling is inevitable and design allowing plate buckling may be necessary. When the panel elastic buckling is allowed, it is necessary to get precise understandings about the post-buckling behaviour of thin plates. It is well known that a thin flat plate undergoes secondary buckling after initial buckling took place and the deflection of the initial buckling mode was developed. From this point of view, this paper discusses the post-buckling behaviour of thin plates under thrust including the secondary buckling phenomenon. Series of elastic large deflection analyses were performed on rectangular plates with aspect ratio 3.6 using the analytical method and the FEM.
This study investigates the bending of an isotropic thin rectangular plate in finite deformation. Employing hyperelastic material of John's type, a non-classical model which generalizes the famous Kirchhoff's plate equation is obtained. Exact solution for deflection of the plate under sinusoidal loads is obtained. Finally, it is shown that the non-classical plate under consideration can be used as a replacement for Kirchhoff's plate on an elastic foundation.

This article describes the load capability of bending piezoelectric actuators with a thin sandwiched PZT plate in association with the stored elastic energy induced by an increased dome height after a curing process. The stored elastic energy within the actuators is obtained via a flexural mechanical bending test. The load capability is evaluated indirectly in terms of an actuating displacement with a load of mass at simply supported and fixed-free boundary conditions. Additionally, a free displacement under no load of mass is measured for a comparison with an actuating displacement. The results reveal that an actuator with a top layer having a high elastic modulus and a low coefficient of thermal expansion exhibits a better performance than the rest of actuators in terms of free displacement as well as actuating displacement due to the formation of the large stored elastic energy within the actuator system. When actuators are excited at AC voltage, the actuating displacement is rather higher than the free displacement for the same actuating conditions. In addition, the effect of PZT ceramic softening results in a slight reduction in the resonance frequency of each actuator as the applied electric field increases. It is thus suggested that the static and dynamic actuating characteristics of bending piezoelectric composite actuators with a thin sandwiched PZT plate should be simultaneously considered in controlling the performance.
This study presents the static and dynamic actuating performances of a bending piezoelectric actuator with a thin sandwiched PZT plate under a static load. The stored elastic energy within the actuators which occurs during a curing process is obtained through a flexural bending test. An actuating performance is evaluated in terms of an actuating displacement at the simply supported condition. The results reveal that an actuator that consists of a top layer having a high elastic modulus and a low coefficient of thermal expansion exhibits a better performance than the rest of actuators due to the formation of the large stored elastic energy within the actuator system. When actuators are excited at the alternating current voltage, the effect of PZT ceramic softening results in a slight reduction in the resonance frequency of each actuator as the applied electric field increases. It is thus suggested that the static and dynamic actuating characteristics of bending piezoelectric actuators with a thin sandwiched PZT plate should be simultaneously considered in controlling their performances.
