  • We present a simple and efficient technique for a plausible elastic deformation of three-dimensional objects. An elastic sweep surface is constructed by interpolating key cross sections with positions, orientations, and boundary shapes determined by physical simulation of simple mass-spring systems. The deformable parts of an object are approximated by the elastic sweep surfaces, and the vertices of the deformable parts are bound to nearby sweep surfaces. As an external force is applied, the corresponding parts of an object change their shapes elastically. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our technique and show its real-time performance on mesh objects.

  • A general method is proposed for elastic stiffness analysis of the leaf type holddown springs using only the geometric data and Young's modulus of the springs. In this method, an engineering beam theory and Castigliano's theory are applied to elastic stiff analysis of the leaf type holddown springs. To show reliability and effectiveness of this method, the elastic stiffness from the proposed method is compared with test result and from the comparison, the unposed method has been proven to be effective for estimating the elastic stiffness of the leaf springs.

  • For the analysis of leveling process by the 3-dimensional elastic-plastic finite element method, a finite element analysis program modeling large deformation of shell has been developed. This program fur analyzing large deformation of sheet during leveling includes spring-back analysis as well as efficient contact treatment between sheet and rolls of leveler. This is verified by the simple leveling experiment with 5 rolls at laboratory. Besides the leveling examples, problems within the category of large strain and rotation, such as 3-dimensional roll-up and gutter occurrence at continuous bending-unbending process are also tested for verification of the program. The residual curvatures of strip predicted by finite element analysis are within 20% error range of the experiment. The formation and direction of anticlastic curvature or gutter during bending-unbending under tension is predicted and this agrees with the experimental results.

  • The natural frequencies of a rectangular plate on non-homogeneous elastic foundations were obtained by using the Ritz method and Galerkin method. The results of both methods using the different type of trial functions were also compared. Furthermore, the effects of the variation of boundary conditions, the stiffness of the foundation spring, the dimension ratio of the plate were investigated. As a result, the Galerkin method can be used to obtain the accurate solution and can be effectively used to design the foundation bed.

  • In this study, a large deflection analysis of a plane frame composed of a thin-walled tube in investigated. When bent, a thin-walled tube is usually controlled by local buckling and subsequent bending collapse of the section. So load resistance reaches the yield level in a thin-walled rectangular tube. This relationship can be divided into three regimes : elastic, post-buckling and crippling. In this paper, this relationship is theoretically presented to be capable of describing nonlinearities and a stiffness matrix is derived by introducing a compound beam-spring element. A numerical analysis uses a constant incremental energy method and the solution is obtained by modifying stiffness matrix at elastic/inelastic stage. This analytical results, load-deflection paths show a good agreement with the test results.

  • This paper desfcribes the formulation for the analysis of the free vibration of a circular cylindrical shell with elastic supports by the transfer influence coefficient method. This method was developed on the base of the concept of the successive transmission of dynamic influence coefficients. The analysis algorithm for circular cylindrical shell elastically restrained by springs, which plays an important role in many industrial fields, is discussed. The supporting springs have the axial, circumferential, radial and rotational spring constants uniformly distributed along the circumference of the shell. The simple computational results on a personal computer demonstrate the validity of the present method, that is, the numerical high accuracy, the high speed analysis method and the flexibility for programming, compared with results of the transfer matrixmethod and reference. We also confirmed that the present algorithm could obtain the solutions of high accuracy for system with a number of intermediate rigid supports. And we could easily treat the intermediate support and all boundary conditions by adequately varying the values of spring constants.

  • The influence of torsional rigidity of hinged flexible appendage on the linear dynamics of flexible spacecrafts with liquid on board was analyzed by considering the spacecraft's main body as a rigid tank, its flexible appendages as two elastically supported elastic beams, and the onboard liquid as an ideal liquid. The meniscus of the liquid free surface due to surface tension was considered. Using the Lagrangian of the spacecraft's main body (rigid tank), onboard liquid, and two beams (flexible appendages) in addition to assuming the system moved symmetrically, the coupled system frequency equations were obtained by applying the Rayleigh-Ritz method. The influence of the torsional rigidity of the flexible appendages on the spacecraft's coupled vibration characteristics was primary focus of investigation. It was found that coupled vibration modes especially that of appendage considerably changed with torsion spring parameter ${\kappa}_t$ of the flexible appendage. In addition, variation of the main body displacement with system parameters was investigated.

  • The vibration of elastically supported bidirectional functionally graded (BDFG) sandwich beams on an elastic foundation is investigated. The sandwich structure is composed of upper and lower layers of BDFG material and the core layer of isotropic material. Material properties of upper and lower layers are assumed to vary continuously along the length and thickness of the beam with a power-law function. Hamilton's principle is used to deduce the vibration equations of motion of the sandwich Timoshenko beam. Then, the partial differential equation of motion is spatially discretized into a time-varying ordinary differential equation in terms of Chebyshev differential matrices. The eigenvalue equation associated with the free vibration is formulated to study the influence of various slenderness ratios, material gradient indexes, thickness ratios, foundation and support spring constants on the vibration frequency of BDFG sandwich beams. The present method can provide researchers with deep insight into the impact of various geometric, material, foundation and support parameters on the vibration behavior of BDFG sandwich beam structures.

  • In this study, static bending of edge cracked micro beams is studied analytically under uniformly distributed transverse loading based on modified couple stress theory. The cracked beam is modelled using a proper modification of the classical cracked-beam theory consisting of two sub-beams connected through a massless elastic rotational spring. The deflection curve expressions of the edge cracked microbeam segments separated by the rotational spring are determined by the Integration method. The elastic curve functions of the edge cracked micro beams are obtained in explicit form for cantilever and simply supported beams. In order to establish the accuracy of the present formulation and results, the deflections are obtained, and compared with the published results available in the literature. Good agreement is observed. In the numerical study, the elastic deflections of the edge cracked micro beams are calculated and discussed for different crack positions, different lengths of the beam, different length scale parameter, different crack depths, and some typical boundary conditions. Also, the difference between the classical beam theory and modified couple stress theory is investigated for static bending of edge cracked microbeams. It is believed that the tabulated results will be a reference with which other researchers can compare their results.
