  • Ratcheting deformation of pressurized Z2CND18.12N stainless steel $90^{\circ}$ elbow pipe with local wall thinning subjected to constant internal pressure and reversed bending was studied using finite element analysis. Chen-Jiao-Kim (CJK) kinematic hardening model, which was used to simulate ratcheting behavior of pressurized $90^{\circ}$ elbow pipe with local wall thinning at extrados, flanks and intrados, was implemented into finite element software ANSYS. The local wall thinning was located at extrados, flanks and intrados of $90^{\circ}$ elbow pipe, whose geometry was rectangular cross-section. The effect of depth, axial length and circumferential angle of local wall thinning at extrados, flanks and intrados on the ratcheting behaviors of $90^{\circ}$ elbow pipe were studied in this paper. Three-dimensional elastic-plastic analysis with Chen-Jiao-Kim (CJK) kinematic hardening model was carried out to evaluate structural ratcheting behaviors. The results indicated that ratcheting strain was generated mainly along the hoop direction, while axial ratcheting strain was relatively small.

  • Polyethylene pressure pipe has been used with a gas pipe material because of workability and stability etc.. Researches on characteristics of polyethylene pressure pipe are carried out, but there are rare. In this study, the tensile test was performed on polyethylene pipe. From the tensile test, AE signals were detected and estimated in real time. Also, the time-frequency analysis of AE signals was analyzed. From test results, PE pipes were displayed typical stress-strain curves oj semi-crystalline polymer. As result analyzed AE signals, could divide stress-strain curves could be divided into four stages. In the elastic region, signals were not detected. Low amplitude distributions of 30-35dB appeared after yielding, and high amplitude distributions of 30-60dB appeared with increased extension. From the time-frequency analysis of AE signals, the frequency band of 100kHz appeared mainly. Also, the frequency band of 300kHz appeared before the necking phenomenon spreads into the whole region, and the frequency band of 500kHz appeared on extension earlier.

  • In this paper, in order to examine cyclic hehavior characteristics and safety of underground flexible pipes for electric cables subject to cyclic vehicle load, FEM analysis and cyclic soil box test were carried out. As results of the test, it was revealed that the vertical displacement of the test was larger than that of FEM analysis because thermal effect arising from power cables made reduction of rigidity of the pipe so that large deformation of the pipe induced by the heat occured. Moreover, it was shown that the final vertical displacement under about 0.4 million times of the cyclic load test was not satisfied with elastic allowable displacement of the pipe, and long term stability of the pipe was not stable since behavior characteristics of the pipe exists plastic strain range pasted clastic strain range.

  • In order to perform elastic-plastic fracture mechanical analyses, fracture resistance curves for concerned materials are required. 1T-CT specimen was used to obtain fracture resistance curves. But the fracture resistance curve by the 1T-CT specimen was very conservative to evaluate the integrity of the structure. And fracture resistance curve was affected by the specimen geometry and crack plane orientation. The objective of this paper is to be certain the conservativeness of the fracture resistance curve by the 1T-CT specimen and to provide the additional safety margin. For these, the fracture tests using the real pipe specimen and standard 1T-CT specimen test were performed. 4-point bending jig was manufactured for pipe test and direct current potential drop method was used to measure the crack extension and length for pipe test. From the pipe and the 1T-CT specimen test results, it was observed that the J-integral of the 1T-CT specimen test at the crack initiation point was very small compare to that of the pipe specimen test.

  • This paper presents plastic limit loads and approximate J estimates for axial through-wall cracked pipe bends under internal pressure and in-plane bending. Geometric variables associated with a crack and pipe bend are systematically varied, and three possible crack locations (intrados, extrados and crown) in pipe bends are considered. Based on small strain finite element limit analyses using elastic-perfectly plastic materials, effect of bend and crack geometries on plastic limit loads for axial through-wall cracked pipe bends under internal pressure and in-plane bending are quantified, and closed-form limit solutions are given. Based on proposed limit load solutions, a J estimation scheme for axial through-wall cracked pipe bends under internal pressure and in-plane bending is proposed based on reference stress approach.

  • In order to analyze the elastic-plastic fracture behavior of a structure, the fracture resistance curve of the material should be known first. The standard CT specimen was used to obtain the fracture resistance curves of a piping system. However, it is known that the fracture resistance curve by the standard CT specimen is very conservative to evaluate the integrity of a structure. Also the fracture resistance curve is effected by the specimen geometry and the dimensions because of the constraint effect. The objective of this paper is to be certain the conservativeness of the fracture resistance curve by the standard CT specimen and to provide an additional safety margin. For these, the fracture tests using a real pipe specimen and the standard CT specimen test were performed. A 4-point bending jig was manufactured for the pipe test and the direct current potential drop method was used to measure the crack extension and the length for the pipe test. Also finite element analyses were performed with a CT specimen and a pipe in order to prove the additional safety margin. From the result of tests and analyses of the pipe and the standard CT specimen, it was observed that the fracture analysis with the standard CT specimen is conservative and the additional safety margin was proved.

  • The elastic buckling strength of a corrugated culvert made of orthotropic material such as FRP was evaluated. The height and length of a corrugated wave and the thickness of the culvert were considered as factors affecting the buckling strength of the culvert. And also, the ratio of the longitudinal stiffness and transverse stiffness was considered as the parameter affecting on the buckling strength of the used orthotropic material. Buckling strengths of various corrugated culvert models with different shapes and stiffness ratio were evaluated by FE analyses and a formula to estimate the elastic buckling strength was suggested from the regression with FE analysis results. Analysis results show that a corrugated culvert has superior buckling strength to a general flat pipe and the suggested formula estimates accurate buckling strength of the corrugated culverts made of orthotropic material.

  • Recently, as steel structures become higher and more long-spanned, application of high-strength steels is increasing gradually. For seismic design of steel structures using high-strength steels(POSTEN60, POSTEN80), analytical method, can describe the large deformation and inelastic cyclic behavior generated by non-proportional cyclic loading, are required. In this paper, cyclic plasticity model was proposed by results of monotonic loading tests ant cyclic loading tests. Three-dimensional finite element analysis is developed by using proposed model and finite deformation theory and verified as compare with experiment result. Using 3-dimensional elastic-plastic finite deformation analysis, seismic analysis of high-strength steel pipe-section piers are carried out. Also, seismic performance of high-strength steel pipe-section piers in parameter of diameter-thickness ratio was clarified.

  • Model tests were performed to investigate the mechanism of lateral earth pressure on a buried pipe, which was installed in a plastic flowing soil mass undergoing lateral movement. On the basis of failure mode tests, the equation of lateral earth pressure to apply Maxwell's visco-elastic model was proposed to consider the soil deformation velocity. Through a series of model tests of differential soil deformation velocity, lateral earth pressure of theoretical equation was compared with experimental results. When lateral soil movement was raised, the lateral earth pressure acting on buried pipe increases linearly with the soil deformation velocity. It shows that the lateral earth pressure on buried pipe is largely affected by soil deformation velocity. When plastic soil movement was raised, lateral earth pressure predicted by theoretical equation showed good agreement with experimental results. Also, coefficient of viscosity by theoretical equation had a good agreement with direct shear test results.

  • This study is to look at the effect for deformation of carbon steel for high-presure pipe, on the AE signals produced by tensile test. Acoustic emission(AE) has been widely used in various fields because of its extreme sensitivity, dynamic detection ability and location of growing defects. We investigated a relationship failure mode and AE signals by tensile test, From the tensile test, we could divide into four ranges of the failure modes of elastic range, yield range, plastic range before $\sigma$u, plastic range after $\sigma$u. And failure behaviors of elastic range, yield range, plastic range before $\sigma$u, plastic range after $\sigma$u could be evaluated in tensile test by AE counts, accumulation counts and time frequency analysis. It is expected to be basic data that can protect a risk according to tensile test and bending of pipe material for pressure vessel, as a real time test of AE.
