Characteristics of Resilient Modulus of Reinforced-Roadbed Materials Using Large Repetitive Triaxial Test (대형반복삼축시험에 의한 강화노반 재료의 회복탄성계수 특성 분석)

  • Reinforced-Roadbed materials are usually composed of crushed stones. Repeated load application can induce deformation in the reinforced-roadbed layer so that it causes irregularity of track. Thus it is important to develop a prediction model of elastic modulus based on stress-strain relation under repeatitive load in order to investigate behavior of reinforced roadbed. The prediction model of elastic modulus of the material can be obtained from repeated triaxial test. However, a proper size of the sample for the test must be used. In this study, a large repeatitive triaxial test apparatus with the sample size of diameter of 30 cm and height of 60cm was adapted for performing test of the crushed stone reinforced-roadbed considering large particle size to get resilient modulus Mr. The obtained resilient modulus was compared to shear modulus obtained from mid size resonant column test. The sample size effect is somewhat large enough so that it is required to design a scale factor based on similarity law in order to use smaller samples for getting elastic modulus of the crushed stone reinforced-roadbed material. A scale factor could be obtained from this study.

Prediction of Equivalent Elastic Modulus for Flexible Textile Composites according to Waviness Ratio of Fiber Tows (섬유다발의 굴곡도에 따른 유연직물복합재료의 등가탄성계수 예측)

  • In this study, the equivalent elastic modulus of flexible textile composites was predicted by nonlinear finite element analysis. The analysis was carried out considering the material nonlinearity of fiber tows and the geometrical nonlinearity during large deformation using commercial analysis software, ABAQUS. To account for the geometrical nonlinearity due to the large shear deformation of fiber tows, a user defined material algorithm was developed and inserted in ABAQUS. In results, nonlinear stress-strain curve for the flexible textile composites under uni-axial tension was predicted from which effective elastic modulus was obtained and compared to the test result. The effective elastic moduli were calculated for the various finite element models with different waviness ratio of fiber tow.

  • The elastic properties and thickness of mullite environmental barrier coatings grown through chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on silicon carbide substrates were measured using frequency domain photoacoustic microscopy. In this technique, extremely narrow bandwidth surface acoustic waves are generated with an amplitude modulated laser source. A photorefractive crystal based interferometer is used to detect the resulting surface displacement. The complex displacement field is mapped as a function of source-to-receiver distance in order to extract the wavelength of the surface acoustic wave at a given excitation frequency, and the phase velocity is determined. The coatings tested exhibited spatial variations in thickness and mechanical properties. The measured surface wave dispersion curves were used to extract an effective value for the elastic modulus and the coating thickness. Nanoindentation was used to validate the measurements of the effective elastic modulus. The average elastic modulus measured through the coating thickness using nanoindentation is compared to the effective modulus found using the photoacoustic system. Optical microscopy is used to validate the thickness measurements. The results indicate that the photoacoustic microscopy technique can be used to estimate the effective elastic properties in coatings exhibiting spatial inhomogeneities, potentially providing valuable feedback for the optimization of the CVD growth process.

  • The paper proposes the elastic modulus evaluation technique of a cantilever beam by vibration analysis based on time-average electronic speckle pattern interferometry (TA-ESPI) with non-contact and nondestructive and Euler-Bernoulli equation. General approaches for the measurement of elastic modulus of thin film are Nano indentation test, Bulge test and Micro-tensile test and so on. They each have strength and weakness in the preparation of test specimen and the analysis of experimental result. ESPI has been developed as a common measurement method for vibration mode visualization and surface displacement. Whole-field vibration mode shape (surface displacement distribution) at a resonance frequency can be visualized by ESPI. And the maximum surface displacement distribution from ESPI is a clue to find the resonance frequency at each vibration mode shape. And the elastic modules of test material can be easily estimated from the measured resonance frequency and Euler-Bernoulli equation. The TA-ESPI vibration analysis technique is able to give the elastic modulus of materials through the simple processing of preparation and analysis.

  • In the trackbed design using elastic multi-layer model, the stress-dependent resilient modulus is an important input parameter, which reflects substructure performance under repeated traffic loading. The resilient moduli of crushed stone and weathered granite soil were developed using nonlinear dynamic stiffness, which can be measured by in-situ and laboratory seismic tests. The prediction models of resilient modulus varying with the deviatoric or bulk stress were proposed (Park et al., 2008). To investigate the performance of the prediction models proposed herein, the elastic response of the test trackbed near PyeongTaek, Korea was evaluated using a 3-D nonlinear elastic computer program (GEOTRACK) and compared with measured elastic vertical displacement during the passages of freight and passenger trains. The material types of the test sub-ballasts are crushed stone and weathered granite soil, respectively. The calculated vertical displacements within the sub-ballasts are within the order of 1mm, and agree well with measured values with the reasonable margin. The prediction models are thus concluded to work properly in the preliminary investigation. The prediction models proposed for resilient modulus were verified by the comparison of the calculated vertical displacements with measured ones during train passages.

  • Targeting 9 types of rocks, which have high frequency of excavation, the researcher has analyzed decreasing behaviors of elastic modulus due to water content. The elastic modulus decreasing behaviors have been classified into 5 steps by uniaxial compressive strength. The results indicate that all of 5 sedimentary rocks and andesite show single decreasing behavior and granite, rhyolite, and gneiss demonstrate another decreasing behavior. Moreover, sensitivity of water content in granite, rhyolite, gneiss is almost twice as fast as that of the other rocks and their residual value of elastic modulus is very low.

  • The silicon as the hyper-elastic material was used to design the shock programmer and dynamic characteristic of the shock programmer was studied. The shock programmer was a structure part that was mounted between the impactor and the test bed. The role of the shock programmer was to generate the acceleration time history by the objective of various impact tests. The effective elastic modulus of the silicon was varied under the velocity of the impactor. The effective elastic modulus of the silicon was estimated by the comparison with results between test and simulation.

  • The paper proposes a new sonic resonance test for a dynamic elastic constant measurement which is based on time-average electronic speckle pattern interferometry(TA-ESPI)and Euler-Bernoulli equation. Previous measurement technique of dynamic elastic constant has the limitation of application for thin film or polymer material because contact to specimen affects the result. TA-ESPI has been developed as a non-contact optical measurement technique which can visualize resonance vibration mode shapes with whole-field. The maximum vibration amplitude at each vibration mode shape is a clue to find the resonance frequencies. The dynamic elastic constant of test material can be easily estimated from Euler-Bernoulli equation using the measured resonance frequencies. The TA-ESPI dynamic elastic constant measurement technique is able to give high accurate elastic modulus of materials through a simple experiment and analysis.

An Assessment of a Resilient Modulus Model by Comparing Predicted and Measured Elastic Deformation of Railway Trackbeds (철도노반의 탄성변위 예측 및 측정을 통한 회복탄성계수 모델 평가)

  • In the mechanistic-empirical trackbed design of railways, the resilient modulus is the key input parameter. This study focused on the resilient modulus prediction model, which is the functions of mean effective principal stress and axial strain, for three types of railroad trackbed materials such as crushed stone, weathered soil, and crushed-rock soil mixture. The model is composed with the maximum Young's modulus and nonlinear values for higher strain in parallel with dynamic shear modulus. The maximum values is modeled by model parameters, $A_E$ and the power of mean effective principal stress, $n_E$. The nonlinear portion is represented by modified hyperbolic model, with the model parameters of reference strain, ${\varepsilon}_r$ and curvature coefficient, a. To assess the performance of the prediction models proposed herein, the elastic response of a test trackbed near PyeongTaek, Korea was evaluated using a 3-D nonlinear elastic computer program (GEOTRACK) and compared with measured elastic vertical displacement during the passages of freight and passenger trains. Effect of Valence Electron Concentration on Elastic Properties of 4d Transition Metal Carbides MC (M = Y, Zr, Nb, and Rh)

  • The electronic structure and elastic properties of the 4d transition metal carbides MC (M = Y, Zr, Nb, Rh) were studied by means of extended H$\ddot{u}$ckel tight-binding band electronic structure calculations. As the valence electron population of M increases, the bulk modulus of the MC compounds in the rocksalt structure does not increase monotonically. The dominant covalent bonding in these compounds is found to be M-C bonding, which mainly arises from the interaction between M 4d and C 2p orbitals. The bonding characteristics between M and C atoms affecting the variation of the bulk modulus can be understood on the basis of their electronic structure. The increasing bulk modulus from YC to NbC is associated with stronger interactions between M 4d and C 2p orbitals and the successive filling of M 4d-C 2p bonding states. The decreased bulk modulus for RhC is related to the partial occupation of Rh-C antibonding states.
