  • In this work, free vibration analysis of size-dependent functionally graded (FG) nanoplates resting on two-parameter elastic foundation is investigated based on a novel nonlocal refined trigonometric shear deformation theory for the first time. This theory includes undetermined integral variables and contains only four unknowns, with is even less than the conventional first shear deformation theory (FSDT). Mori-Tanaka model is employed to describe gradually distribution of material properties along the plate thickness. Size-dependency of nanosize FG plate is captured via the nonlocal elasticity theory of Eringen. By implementing Hamilton's principle the equations of motion are obtained for a refined four-variable shear deformation plate theory and then solved analytically. To show the accuracy of the present theory, our research results in specific cases are compared with available results in the literature and a good agreement will be demonstrated. Finally, the influence of various parameters such as nonlocal parameter, power law indexes, elastic foundation parameters, aspect ratio, and the thickness ratio on the non-dimensional frequency of rectangular FG nanoscale plates are presented and discussed in detail.

  • Mechanical properties of a composite mixed by components with known material properties are numerically predicted at various volume fractions rather than investigated through experiments. The properties, elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio, are estimated by minimizing the error between the static displacements computed from a model for the composite and those computed from a model of homogeneous and isotropic material. A finite element model for a composite is proposed to distribute different types of material components easily into the model depending on the volume fraction. Mechanical properties of a composite filled with solid mircospheres are predicted numerically through a sample study and the estimated results are compared with experimental results and some theories.

  • This paper focuses on thermal properties of a newly prepared composite material by nano-silica and micro-silica mixture. Nano-silica and micro-silica mixture composites were made by dispersing surface treated nano-silica(average radius: 10 nm) and micro-size silica in epoxy resin. To investigate the effects of nano-silica and micro-size silica mixture(ENMC), the glass transition temperature (Tg), coefficients of thermal expansion(CTE) and elastic modulus of DMA properties by DSC, TMA and DMA devices were measured for the ENMC according to increase nano-silica addition contents and EMC. All properties of the neat epoxy were improved by the addition of micro-silica, which was improved much further by the addition of surface treated nano-silica to the EMC system.

  • We investigated the tribological properties of amorphous carbon (a-C) films deposited with CrC interlayers of various thicknesses as the adhesive layer. A-C and CrC thin films were deposited using the unbalanced magnetron (UBM) sputtering method with graphite and chromium as the targets. CrC films as the interlayer were fabricated under a-C films, and various structural, surface, and tribological properties of a-C films deposited with various CrC interlayer thicknesses were investigated. With various CrC interlayer thicknesses under a-C films, the tribological properties of CrC/a-C films were improved; the increased film thickness exhibited a maximum high hardness of over 27.5 GPa, high elastic modulus of over 242 GPa, critical load of 31 N, residual stress of 1.85 GPa, and a smooth surface below 0.09 nm at the condition of 30-nm CrC thickness.

  • This paper presents the mechanical properties of 3C-SiC thin film according to 0, 7, and 10% carrier gas $(H_2)$ concentrations using Nano Indentation. When carrier gas $(H_2)$ concentration was 10%, it has been proved that the mechanical properties, elastic modulus and hardness, of 3C-SiC are the best of them. In the case of 10% carrier gas concentration, Young's modulus and Hardness were obtained as 367 GPa and 36 GPa, respectively. When the surface roughness according to $H_2$ concentrations was investigated by AFM (atomic force microscope), when $H_2$ concentration was 10%, the roughness of 3C-SiC thin was 9.92 nm, which is also the best of them. Therefore, in order to apply poly 3C-SiC thin film to MEMS applications, $H_2$ concentration's rate should increase to obtain better mechanical properties and surface roughness.

  • Mechanical properties of polycrystalline{{{{ {Ti }_{3 }{SiC}_{2 } }} were investigated. Hertzian indentation test using a spher-ical indenter was used to study elastic and plastic behavior in{{{{ {Ti }_{3 }{SiC}_{2 } }} A high ratio of hardness to elastic mo-dulus indicated that mechanical properties of{{{{ {Ti }_{3 }{SiC}_{2 } }} are somehow similar to those of metals. Indentation stress-strain curve deviated from an ideal elastic limit indicating exceptional plasticity in this material. De-formation zones were formed below the contact as well as around the contact area. Intragrain slip would ac-count for high plasticity.

  • Clear aligners are popular in the field of dental orthodontic treatment because they offer a discreet alternative to braces due to their use of transparent materials. They are formed from flat transparent polymer materials by hot pressed molding. It is necessary to know the mechanical properties of the polymer materials to be able to form the exact shapes of the clear aligners. However, this information is not publicly available. In this study, we present a method to reliably measure the mechanical properties of clear aligner polymer materials and analyze the factors effecting these mechanical properties. First, we surveyed standards related to the mechanical properties of polymer materials to obtain reliable data. Consequently, ISO 527 was selected for use in this study because of the size and thickness of the flat transparent polymer material. The uniaxial tensile tester was constructed and it was verified whether displacement of a crosshead could be regarded as a displacement of gauge-length by optical analysis. Uniaxial tensile tests of three thicknesses from three different companies were performed and each engineering stress-strain curve was measured. Tensile strengths and elastic moduli were obtained by analysis of the stress-strain curves. The tensile strength and elastic modulus of ISO 527 was found to be approximately 50MPa and 2.3GPa, respectively. Both values showed material and thickness dependency.

  • Previous studies have considered the permeability and construction method of paving materials, thus focusing on more practical issues rather than basic research of their properties. The present study investigated the possibility of using an elastic paving material having lesser thickness in the resurfacing of existing concrete or asphalt paved areas while satisfying the necessary conditions of resilience and water permeability. An alternative to complete reconstruction would reduce the amount of resource wastage and environmental pollution, as well as the cost of projects. This study investigated five variants of thickness (10, 13, 15, 20, 25mm) and three mixing ratios of binder to rubber chips (20, 22.5, 25%) to ascertain the ideal basic properties of each. The obtained test data revealed that a minimum thickness(10~25mm) of the elastic paving materials can be determined from a qualitative point of view, and alternatives should be provided to improve the durability of the paving material on account of the temperature sensitivity.

  • As the digital TV markets rapidly growing, many manufacturers introduce large size flat screen TV units. There are two different display types available to large size models which are plasma and TFT-LCD. Since both are constructed with thin large panels that are mostly fragile to even moderate mechanical shock inputs. Some large size panels are severely resonated by the acoustic sound generated TV which deteriorates video quality. Recognizing the potential problems of large displays, accurate measurement of the panels is to be an essential task for the reliable design. Measurement of mechanical properties of a thin large crystallized panel such as TFT-LCD display with traditional material testing equipments is challenging. Since TFT-LCDs are constructed with combination of brittle glass panels, polymer sheets, and liquid crystal, their properties are not only anisotropic but also usually non-linear. Accurate measurement of the properties often requires very expensive facilities. Especially when the size of the test sample is as large as 40-inch or wider, direct measurement cost is prohibitive. Even worse, machining of the large TFT-LCD to make a smaller size specimen that could be fit into a material tester is not possible because of liquid crystal leakage. A new method fer the measurement of elastic modulus of large TFT-LCD panel is presented in this article. The suggested method provides a simple, economic, and user-friendly way fer measuring the elastic modulus of large panels with considerable level of accuracy.

  • This disquisition proposes a nonlocal strain gradient beam theory for thermo-mechanical dynamic characteristics of embedded smart shear deformable curved piezoelectric nanobeams made of porous electro-elastic functionally graded materials by using an analytical method. Electro-elastic properties of embedded curved porous FG nanobeam are assumed to be temperature-dependent and vary through the thickness direction of beam according to the power-law which is modified to approximate material properties for even distributions of porosities. It is perceived that during manufacturing of functionally graded materials (FGMs) porosities and micro-voids can be occurred inside the material. Since variation of pores along the thickness direction influences the mechanical and physical properties, so in this study thermo-mechanical vibration analysis of curve FG piezoelectric nanobeam by considering the effect of these imperfections is performed. Nonlocal strain gradient elasticity theory is utilized to consider the size effects in which the stress for not only the nonlocal stress field but also the strain gradients stress field. The governing equations and related boundary condition of embedded smart curved porous FG nanobeam subjected to thermal and electric field are derived via the energy method based on Timoshenko beam theory. An analytical Navier solution procedure is utilized to achieve the natural frequencies of porous FG curved piezoelectric nanobeam resting on Winkler and Pasternak foundation. The results for simpler states are confirmed with known data in the literature. The effects of various parameters such as nonlocality parameter, electric voltage, coefficient of porosity, elastic foundation parameters, thermal effect, gradient index, strain gradient, elastic opening angle and slenderness ratio on the natural frequency of embedded curved FG porous piezoelectric nanobeam are successfully discussed. It is concluded that these parameters play important roles on the dynamic behavior of porous FG curved nanobeam. Presented numerical results can serve as benchmarks for future analyses of curve FG nanobeam with porosity phases.
