비선형 Ekman 펌핑 모델의 개발 (Development of a Nonlinear Ekman Pumping Model)

  • Developed in this study is a nonlinear Ekman pumping model to be used in simulating the rotating flows with quasi-three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. In this model, the Ekman pumping velocity is given from the solution of the Ekman boundary-layer equations for the region adjacent to the bottom wall of the flow domain; the boundary-layer equations are solved in the momentum-integral form. The developed model is then applied to rotating flows in a rectangular container receiving a time-periodic forcing. By comparing our results with the DNS and experimental data we have validated the developed model. We also compared our results with those given from the classical Ekman pumping model. It was found that our model can predict the rotating flows more precisely than the classical linear model.

  • In this study, spin-up flows in a rectangular container are analysed both numerically and experimentally. In the numerical computation, we use two Ekman pumping models, the classical leading order and the first order. We also compared our results with those obtained for the case without a pumping model. Effect of two parameters, Reynolds number and the Rossby number on the flow evolution is studied. The first order and the leading order Ekman pumping models are in good agreement with the experimental result compared with the non-Ekman pumping model. Attention is given to the merging of two cyclonic vortices.

  • A two dimensional shallow-water flow around a cavity driven by a sinusoidally oscillating external flow was studied numerically with an Ekman pumping model. A container model of "T" shape was constructed in the numerical computation for comparison with the experimental observation. The material transport in the external region is in good agreement with the experimentally recorded particle trajectories. It turns out that two large coherent vortices situated in the exterior region of the cavity are responsible for clockwise and counterclockwise drift motions, in large scale, of particles. The Ekman pumping model suggested in this study was found to be satisfactory.isfactory.

  • 본 연구에서는 종횡비가 2인 직사각형 용기에 대한 스핀업 유동을 실험과 수치해석으로 연구하였다. 수치해석에서는 1차-, 2차- 에크만 펌핑 모형을 사용한 경우와 평정을 무시한 경우에 관해 유동장을 구하였으며, 실험에서는 고전적인 PIV 방법을 통하여 속도장을 구하였다. 연구결과, 1차-, 2차- 에크만 펌핑 모형은 실험과 유사하게 나타났으며, 펌핑을 무시한 경우는 상이한 유동양상을 보였다.

원통 내 스핀업 유동에서의 관성진동에 관한 수치해석적 연구 (Numerical Study on Inertial Oscillations in the Spin-up of Fluid in a Circular Cylinder)

  • In this paper we present the aspect of inertial oscillation typically observed in the spin-up of fluids at low Rossby numbers in a circular cylinder. Numerical computations for the quasi three-dimensional equation as well as one-dimensional equation are performed to estimate the predictability of the one-dimensional equation with Ekman pumping/suction models. It is assumed that the discrepancy between the two results may be attributed to the inertial oscillation The detailed analysis to the numerical results reveals that the axial plane is dominated by a comparatively strong oscillatory flows caused by the inertial oscillation. In view of the fact that the time-averaged flow field however agrees to the Taylor-Proudman theorem, it is recommended that further analysis is needed to obtain an improved one-dimensional model like the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation for turbulent flows.

  • In this paper, we show the numerical and experimental results of two-dimensional fluid motions inside a rectangular container with a vertical plate subjected to a background rotation added by a rotational oscillation. In the PIV experiment we apply a new algorithm, NTSS, to the velocity calculation. In the numerical computation, the linear Ekman-pumping model was used to take the bottom friction effect into account. It was found that it showed good agreement with the experimental results at low ${\epsilon}$ number.

  • We present numerical and experimental results of the periodic flows inside a rectangular container under a background rotation. In numerical computation, a parallel-computation technique with MPI is implemented. Flow visualization and PIV measurement are also performed to obtain velocity fields at the free surface. Through a series of numerical and experimental works, we aim to clarify the fundamental reasons of discrepancy between the two-dimensional computation and the experimental measurement, which was detected in the previous study for the same flow model. Specifically, we check if the various assumptions prerequisite for the validity of the classical Ekman pumping law are satisfied for periodic flows under a background rotation.

  • This paper describes a study of the spin-up of a free-surface fluid in a rectangular container in which an internal cylindrical obstacle is mounted. Experiments and numerical analysis have been carried out for a variety of obstacle position. Increase in the speed of background rotation and near wall position of cylindrical obstacle results in the complex flow structures. Numerical and experimental results agree well with each other and the Ekman-pumping model is also applied to this flow.
