  • Objectives : This study aimed to convert into weight the dosages of flower of Daphne canescens and leaf of Phyllostachys nigra var. henonsis, whose daily dosages are likened to an object in 《Treatise on Cold Damage Diseases》. This study also aimed to understand their implications along with the previously studied gypsium and rhubarb. Methods : After reviewing documents, the dosages were converted into weight, confirmed by experiment, and their implications were considered. Results : A chicken-egg-volume of flowers of Daphne canescens is one Ryang(6.5 g) and two handfuls of leaves of Phyllostachys nigra var. henonsis is four Ryang(13 g). Each item was only used once in a decoction. Their dosages were expressed in weight respectively in 《Supplement to the Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold》 and 《Bohenggyuljangbuyongyakbubyo》. Gypsium dosage was expressed in weight except in Daecheongryong-tang as chicken-egg-volume(16 Ryang). To liken a dosage to an object is an exception, as in the three cases above; for precision and convenience it is recommended that dosages be expressed in weight, in which case all three items fell into one of eight categories from one Ryang to 16 Ryang. Rhubarb was measured in weight, but only when using the 12-hour leaching method, four Ryang of rhubarb was cut into of 5-6 wide-go-stone-sized pieces and two Ryang into 5-6 go-stone-sized pieces. Conclusions : To liken a dosage to an object is only an exception and lacks precision and convenience; therefore dosages ended up expressed in weight, count, or volume.

  • Drastic changes were observed in egg chamber during oogenesis of Aedes togoi immediately after blood meal. The egg chamber, in which the oocyte remains at previtellogenic stage before blood meal, shows very little change in size even for 3 days after emergence but increased 25 folds in volume within 60 hours after blood meal, presumably due to rapid yolk formation. Upto 6 hours after blood meal structures considered to be the precursor of the yolk granules were not observed in the space between follicle cells and oocyte. Vitelline bodies, which are similar to dense bodies secreted from follicle cells, appeared in the space at 10 hours after blood meal. Although vitelline bodies were fused to form vitelline layer, these bodies seem to contribute to the formation of yolk granules. Nurse cells are connected to oocytes by cytoplasmic bridge before blood meal, but the cells are absorbed into oocyte at 6 hours after blood meal.

  • The effects of eggs on the quality properties, color measurment, cooking quality, textureal and sensory properties of Ramyon were esxamined. The contents of egg used were from 1% to 5% based on flour weight. The farinograph absorption decreased by egg but farinograph stability and breakdown were increased in vice versa. The yellowness of Ramyon prepared with eggs was higher than that of control. At cooking quality examination of Ramyon manufactred with eggs, weight of cooked Ramyon was increase but volume was appeared in vice versa. Extraction amounts of Ramyon manufactured with eggs during cooking were much smaller than those of control. The shear extrusion force and hardness of Ramyon manufactured with eggs were shown much higher value than those of control. The I2 reaction value of Ramyon manufactured with eggs and control were shown to almost same value,, from 2.13 to 2.20. Sensory properties of cooked Ramyon which was manufactured with eggs showed quite acceptable. Based on the cooking and sensory evaluation test, addition of 5% eggs to wheat flour may be suitable for processing Ramyon.

  • The crude calcium acetate (CCA) was made from egg-shell and acetic acid to use the CCA as a coagulant for Tofu (soy bean curd). Amount of CCA. $CO_2$ and residue made from 5.6g egg-shell (average weight of a egg-shell) and 10% acetic acid(50m1) was 3.8g, $300{\pm}10ml(at\;25^{\circ}$ and 2.1g. respectively. Tofu formable minimum concentration of the CCA was about 0.14% similar to that of $CaCl_2$, $MgCl_2$. Volume, hardness, taste and content f protein and lipid of Tofu by addition of CCA were not significantly different in those of Tofu that magnesium chloride and calcium chloride were used.

  • Much of the interest on the chemopreventive properties of herbs and plants has been raised, whereas little is regarding to anti-tumor effect of farming and aquatic products. In the present study, the anti-tumor effect of hot-water extract of a seaweed, BLC (Sargassum fulvellum) and BLC/HEN egg was investigated using MCF-7 cells in vitro and in vivo systems. We found that the BLC extract and BLC/HEN egg inhibited cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner, which might be mediated through up-regulation of p53. Furthermore, this test compound can directly induce apoptosis in MCF-7 cells, which might be mediated through up-regulation of a pro-apoptotic Bax protein and down-regulation of a anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 protein, not by immune system. Nude mice bearing established breast tumors (with exogenous estradiol) were treated with BLC extract and BLC/HEN egg. Treatment BLC extract and BLC/HEN egg caused a 42% and 71% inhibition of tumor growth, respectively. Both agents caused a significant inhibition of volume and weight growth of estrogen independent human breast tumors established from MCF-7 cells. Our results suggested that BLC extract and BLC/HEN egg have the efficacious effect of human breast cancer not only in vitro but also in vivo.

  • The excess volumes of mixing of benzyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, halothane, and procaine in vesicle and suspensions of several lipids have been determined at $25^{\circ}C$ using a excess volume dilatometer. The potency of general anesthetics has long been known to be correlated with lipid solubility. Denaturations of the bacteriorhodopsin, which is a sole membrane protein in the purple membrane of Halobacteriun Halobium, were studied by UV/Vis absorption changes. The excess volumes of mixing of benzyl alcohol and procaine in egg lecithin were all found to be negative and this result was confirmed as Miller's supposition.

  • We examined the quality characteristics and conducted a sensory evaluation of muffins made with rice flour and the biopolymer hydroxyethyl methylcellulose (HEMC) to identify a new health functional food additive. First, overrun and foam stability of HEMC-HV (high viscosity) was better than HEMC-LV (low viscosity) to prepare muffins. Also the quality of rice muffins(volume, specific cake volume, and baking loss) was analyzed. There was no significant difference in the sensory evaluation of rice flour muffins containing foam mixture(egg white:HEMC-HV, 3:1, v/v) and muffin made from flour. The results showed that HEMC-HV was suitable for quick bread muffin-making using 100% rice flour.

  • This study was carried out to monitor reproductive responses of great tits in 17 urban forests in Daegu metropolitan city. The reproductive perspectives of great tits were surveyed by using 106 artificial bird nests, of which five or seven nests were set up in every urban forest. A ratio of artificial nests used by great tits for their reproduction was 27.4%. It was showing that forests, where the reproductive response was higher, was located at the edge of the city, or was known as having a good vegetation structure in the urban area. The laying date of a great tit was a little earlier in forests in the middle of the city. It might be dependent on the density of artificial land uses including a residential area and an industrial complex, which are able to increase an urban micro-temperature. Otherwise, natural forests or forest patches nearby natural forests located at the edge of the city were showing that the laying date of great tits was relatively later than the oneee in the forest in the middle of the city. There was a big difference of reproduction perspectives of great tit between the 1st and 2nd reproduction. In the 1st reproduction, a clutch size was larger, while an egg volume was so low. Otherwise, the clutch size was shown so smaller in the 2nd reproduction than in the 1st reproduction, while the egg volume was larger in the 2nd reproduction. It might be due to the survival strategy of a great tit to prepare the winter season for a juvenile. Many variables, regarding to the problem of climate changes, have been linked to the environment of urban area and the bird habitats. Finally, Monitoring a bird reproduction is a valuable work for managing an urban forest as well as for conserving a natural forest.

  • This study was performed to investigate the characteristics within ages and freezing tolerance of spermatozoa in Jindo Dog. Experimental animals were selected 12 herds within 1~8 year's old and collected semen for 2 times in a week. Collected semen was evaluated whole volume and sperm number with CASA system (SIAS, Medical Supply, Korea). Then seminal plasma were separated and diluted with modified Tris-egg yolk extender and added 4, 6 and 8% glycerol for 4 times to final concentration and equilibrated for 1.5 hrs. Before and after freezing, equilibrated semen were evaluated the survival rates. Total volume of sperm at 1~2 year old group is as $5.2{\times}10^8\;cells/ml$ largest and there were no significance among groups. The motility of 1~2 year old group is highest as 90.9% and there were significance among groups. Abnormal sperm showed similar among groups. The survival rate in terms of pre-freezing and post-freezing were decreased all levels of glycerol and reveled 87.0% to 64.5% in 4%, 87.5% to 51.9% in 6% and 73.4% to 29.7% in 8%, there were significant difference among the groups (p<0.05). These results suggest that the optimal sperm-freezing methods in Jindo Dog are utilized with modified Tris egg-yolk extender with 4% glycerol and were improve the reproductive activity by these methods.
