This study analyzes the economic efficiency of the virtual power plant (VPP) model that aims to integrate a number of emergency generators installed at the consumer end and operate them as a single power plant. Several factors such as the demand response benefits from VPP operation and costs incurred for converting emergency generators into VPP are considered to assess the economic efficiency of the proposed VPP model. Scenarios for yearly VPP conversion are prepared based on the installed capacities of the emergency generators distributed in South Korea, while the costs and benefits are calculated from the viewpoints of participants and power companies in accordance with California Test Methods. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis is conducted on the cost factors among those affecting the economic efficiency of VPP business because these two factors have a great impact on benefits.
When referring to weight, volume, and efficiency, a SuperConducting Synchronous Generator (SCSG) is definitely superior to conventional generators as a large-scale wind power generation system. The SCSG is connected to a full power converter that transmits the energy from the SCSG to the power grid. To reduce the current stress and system cost, the SCSG which has nine-phase armature windings with three converters is used. This paper deals with a comparative analysis of 10 MW superconducting wind power generators with three-phase and nine-phase armature windings. The stator windings of SCSGs are of various types. Using the finite element method, SCSGs are analyzed and compared in terms of the weight and volume of SCSGs, the total length of the superconducting wire, harmonics, torque performance, and efficiency. The analyzed results will be effectively utilized to design large-scale superconducting generators for wind power generation systems.

The authors propose to use the vortex generators in order to improve of the efficiency for the cambered otter boards. The equipments and testing method of this model test was the same as the previous report. This study was tested for 6 models such as the single cambered, the V-shaped cambered and the slotted cambered otter board without and with vortex generators. The results obtained are as follows: \circled1 C sub(L) of the single cambered model otter board with vortex generators was increased about 10% in comparison with that of model without vortex generators, C sub(D) decreased 2%, and L/D increased 5~20%. \circled2 L/D of the V-shaped cambered model otter board with vortex generators was increased 10~20% in comparison with that of model without vortex generators. \circled3 C sub(L) of the two slotted cambered model otter board with vortex generators was increased about 20% within an angle of attack 25$^{\circ}$ in comparison with that of without vortex generators, C sub(D) increased 5~20%, and L/D was higher than prototype within an angle of attack 20$^{\circ}$. \circled4 The separation point of the model otter boards with vortex generators was removed back ward a little in comparison with that of the model without vortex generators. \circled5 Flow speed difference of the back side to the front side of model otter boards with vortex generators was increased a little in comparison with that of the models without vortex generators. \circled6 The size of separation zone in case of the model otter boards with vortex generators was decreased about 10% in comparison with that of the models without vortex generators.
Particulate matters (PM) that is generated by most diesel engine is regulated by the mass concentration measured by the conventional method it had been. Recently, Europe PMP (Particle Measurement Program) decided to start the regulation of vehicle's nano-sized particle number (PN) from the year of 2011 because of nano-particle's higher degree of harm to the human body. So firstly, the standard level of PN emission is introduced in the Euro 5/6 emissions regulation with a limit of $6{\times}10^{11}$ per km for light duty vehicle. Also KPMP(Korea Particle Measurement Program) was organized to copy quickly international technical trend. In this paper, it was investigated the nano-sized PN measurement characteristics for different particle generators between spray type and soot type. And the difference ratio between particle generators, the characteristic of PN concentration, counting efficiency and linearity was analyzed. Then, we make conclusions as followed. When particle diameter is increased, counting efficiency of two generators is decreased. Also Secondary calibration method is more higher 3% than Primary calibration method. Finally, SOF which is included in soot particles is not totally removed so it have great influence on test result of counting efficiency and linearity.
High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) synchronous generators can be designed with either an air-core type or iron-core type. The air-core type has higher efficiency under rated rotating speed and load than the iron-core type because of the iron losses which may produce much heat. However, the total length of HTS wire in the air-core type is longer than the iron-core type because the generated magnetic flux density of the air-core type is low. This paper deals with designs of 10 MW air-core and iron-core HTS wind power generators for wind turbines. Fully air-core, partially iron-core, and fully iron-core HTS generators are designed, and various stator winding methods in the three HTS generators are also considered, such as short-pitch concentrated winding, full-pitch concentrated winding, short-pitch distributed winding, and full-pitch distributed winding. These HTS generators are analyzed using a 3D finite elements method program. The analysis results of the HTS generators are discussed in detail, and the results will be effectively utilized for large-scale wind power generation systems.
This work aims to study and analyze the various operating modes of universal power converter which is powered by solar and thermoelectric generators. The proposed converter is operated in a DC-DC (buck or boost mode) and DC-AC (single phase) inverter with high efficiency. DC power sources, such as solar photovoltaic (SPV) panels, thermoelectric generators (TEGs), and Li-ion battery, are selected as input to the proposed converter according to the nominal output voltage available/generated by these sources. The mode of selection and output power regulation are achieved via control of the metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) switches in the converter through the modified stepped perturb and observe (MSPO) algorithm. The MSPO duty cycle control algorithm effectively converts the unregulated DC power from the SPV/TEG into regulated DC for storing energy in a Li-ion battery or directly driving a DC load. In this work, the proposed power sources and converter are mathematically modelled using the Scilab-Xcos Simulink tool. The hardware prototype is designed for 200 W rating with a dsPIC30F4011 digital controller. The various output parameters, such as voltage ripple, current ripple, switching losses, and converter efficiency, are analyzed, and the proposed converter with a control circuit operates the converter closely at 97% efficiency.
Emergency generators normally use diesel engines. The generators need to conduct weekly no-load operation inspections to ensure stable performance at emergency situations. In particular, the generators with large diesel engines mainly use rectangle type filter substrates. In order to minimize hazardous emissions generated by generators, optimizing the reduction efficiency through CFD analysis of flow characteristics of PM/NOX reduction system is important. In this study, we analyzed internal flow by CFD, which is difficult to confirm by experimental method. The main factors in our numerical study are the changes of flow uniformity and back pressure. Therefore, changes in flow characteristics were studied according to urea injector locations, selective catalyst reduction (SCR) diffuser angle, and filter porosity.

More than 80% of electric loads need DC electricity rather than AC at the moment. If DC power could be supplied directly to the terminal loads, power conversion stages including rectifiers, converters, and power adapters can be reduced or simplified. Therefore, DC microgrids may be able to improve energy efficiency of power distribution systems. In addition, DC microgrids can increase the penetration level of renewable energy resources because many renewable energy resources such as solar photovoltaic(PV) generators, fuel cells, and batteries generate electric power in the form of DC power. The integration of the DC generators to AC electric power systems requires the power conversion circuits that may cause additional energy loss. This paper discusses the capability and feasibility of DC microgrids with regard to energy efficiency analysis through detailed dynamic simulation of DC and AC microgrids. The dynamic simulation models of DC and AC microgrids based on the Microgrid Test System in KEPCO Research Institute are described in detail. Through simulation studies on various conditions, this paper compares the energy efficiency and advantages of DC and AC microgrids.

Most current ships have adopted on-board diesel generators to produce electricity, but the overall efficiency of equipment is down to about 50% due to thermal losses from operations such as exhaust gas, jacket water cooler, scavenge air cooler, etc. Recently, fuel cells have been highlighted as a promising technology to reduce the effect on the environment and have a higher efficiency. Therefore, this paper suggested a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC)-gas turbine (GT) using waste heat from a SOFC and SOFC-GT-steam turbine (ST) with Rankine cycle. To compare both configurations, the fuel flow rate, current density, cell voltage, electrical power, and overall efficiency were evaluated at different operating loads. The overall efficiency of both SOFC hybrid systems was higher than the conventional system.
We present the design optimization of the magnetic pole and slot design options that minimize the cogging torque of permanent-magnet (PM) brushless generators for small wind turbine generators. Most small wind-turbines use direct-driven PM generators which have the characteristics of low speed and high efficiency. Small wind-turbines are usually self-starting and require very simple controls. The cogging torque is an inherent characteristic of PM generators, and is mainly caused by the generator's geometry. The inherent the cogging torque can cause problems during turbine start-up and cut-in in order to start softly and to run a power generator even when there is little wind power during turbine start-up. Thus, to improve the operation of small turbines, it is important to minimize the cogging torque. To determine the effects of the cogging torque reductions, we adjust the slot opening width, slot skewing, mounting method of magnets, magnet shape, and the opening and combinations of different numbers of slots per pole. Of these different methods, we combine the methods and optimized the design variables for the most significant design options affecting the cogging torque. Finally, we apply to the target design model and compare FEA simulation and measured results to validate the design optimization.
