  • Dynamical expansion of H II regions plays a key role in dispersing surrounding gas and therefore in limiting the efficiency of star formation in molecular clouds. We use analytic methods and numerical simulations to explore expansions of spherical dusty H II regions, taking into account the effects of direct radiation pressure, gas pressure, and total gravity of the gas and stars. Simulations show that the structure of the ionized zone closely follows Draine (2011)'s static equilibrium model in which radiation pressure acting on gas and dust grains balances the gas pressure gradient. Strong radiation pressure creates a central cavity and a compressed shell at the ionized boundary. We analytically solve for the temporal evolution of a thin shell, finding a good agreement with the numerical experiments. We estimate the minimum star formation efficiency required for a cloud of given mass and size to be destroyed by an HII region expansion. We find that typical giant molecular clouds in the Milky Way can be destroyed by the gas-pressure driven expansion of an H II region, requiring an efficiency of less than a few percent. On the other hand, more dense cluster-forming clouds in starburst environments can be destroyed by the radiation pressure driven expansion, with an efficiency of more than ~30 percent that increases with the mean surface density, independent of the total (gas+stars) mass. The time scale of the expansion is always smaller than the dynamical time scale of the cloud, suggesting that H II regions are likely to be a dominant feedback process in protoclusters before supernova explosions occurs.

  • Lincomycin is one of the major species among the Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) detected from the four major rivers in Korea. The structure characterization was performed of six degradation products of lincomycin formed under the irradiation of electron beam, and the degradation efficiency as a function of the various irradiation dose and sample concentration was investigated. Electron beam (10 MeV, 0.5 mA and 5 kW) experiments for the structural characterization of degradation products that are fortified with lincomycin, were performed at the dose of 10 kGy. The separation of degradation products and lincomycin was carried out using a C18 column ($2.1{\times}100$ mm, $3.5{\mu}m$), using gradient elution with 20 mM ammonium acetate and acetonitrile. The structures of six degradation products of lincomycin were proposed by interpretation of mass spectra and chromatograms by LC-MS/MS. The mass fragmentation pathways of mass spectra in tandem mass spectrometry were also proposed. Experiments were performed of the degradation efficiency as a function of the irradiation dose intensity and the initial concentration of lincomycin in an aqueous environment. In addition, increased degradation efficiency was observed with a higher dose of electron beam and lower concentration.

  • This paper focuses on a mobile edge-computing-enabled heterogeneous network. A battery level-aware task-scheduling framework is proposed to improve the energy efficiency and prolong the operating hours of battery-powered mobile devices. The formulated optimization problem is a typical mixed-integer nonlinear programming problem. To solve this nondeterministic polynomial (NP)-hard problem, a decomposition-based task-scheduling algorithm is proposed. Using an alternating optimization technology, the original problem is divided into three subproblems. In the outer loop, task offloading decisions are yielded using a pruning search algorithm for the task offloading subproblem. In the inner loop, closed-form solutions for computational resource allocation subproblems are derived using the Lagrangian multiplier method. Then, it is proven that the transmitted power-allocation subproblem is a unimodal problem; this subproblem is solved using a gradient-based bisection search algorithm. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed framework achieves better energy efficiency than other frameworks. Additionally, the impact of the battery level-aware scheme on the operating hours of battery-powered mobile devices is also investigated.

  • This paper presents an explicit analytical iteration method for form-finding analysis of suspension bridges. By extending the conventional analytical form-finding method predicated on the elastic catenary theory, two nonlinear governing equations are derived for calculating the accurate unstrained lengths of the entire cable systems both the main cable and the hangers. And for the gradient-based iteration method, the derivation of explicit calculation for the Jacobian matrix while solving the nonlinear governing equation enhances the computational efficiency. The results from sensitivity analysis show well performance of the explicit Jacobian matrix compared with the traditional finite difference method. According to two numerical examples of long span suspension bridges studied, the proposed method is also compared with those reported approaches or the fundamental criterions in suspension bridge structural analysis, which eventually confirms the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed approach.

  • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are representative hydrophobic organic carbons (HOCs). Surfactant-enhanced electrokinetic (EK) remediation is an innovative in-situ technology that can effectively remove HOCs from low-permeability soils. In this study, the electrokinetic remediation using Tergitol 15-S-12, a nonionic surfactant, was conducted for the removal of phenanthrene from kaolinite. Tergitol 15-S-12 was used at concentrations of 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 7.5 g/L to enhance the solubility of phenanthrene. When the surfactant solution was applied to EK system, high electrical potential gradient was maintained and the amount of electroosmotic flow decreased. Removal efficiency of phenanthrene was proportional to the concentration of Tergitol 15-S-12 because the solubility and mobility of phenanthrene was enhanced by surfactant micelle. Therefore, the suitable concentration of nonionic surfactant Tergitol 15-S-12 is expected to improve the removal efficiency of PAHs in EK remediation.

  • For a Switched Reluctance Motor(SRM) drive, the important things are 1) reducing torque ripple, 2) improving efficiency, 3) sensorless speed control, 4) accurate position. The position information impotant for the efficiency and smoothness drives. Since SRMs characteristics are nonlinear. It is difficult to estimated phase current in saturation region. This paper describes a method for indirect sensing of the rotor position in SRM which use both voltage and current. The method obtains rotor position by using unconducting phase. The information about the rotor position is achieved by differentiating the unconducting phase current or the voltage gradient. And then, this paper presents a torque control with indirect rotor position detection methods. This torque control is achieved by developing a detailed nonlinear model of the motor.

  • This paper proposes a new design method for electric scooter which can maximize the power efficiency at the given driving condition. The proposed method is designed with the electric and mechanical parameters and driving dynamics. These values are extracted from the dynamic and mathematical equations of the scooter. For validation, numerical simulation results are presented in this paper. As a result, the scooter achieved over 80% efficiency at 360 rpm at 1.42kw load. It is clear that the proposed method was verified through a 1.42kw numerical model.

  • After-treatment apparatus ceramic DPF (diesel particulate filter) have been applied to reduce harmful particulate matters(PM) among emissions from diesel engines so far, but they are easy to be fragile and weak in thermal shock. This research aims to investigate a metal type filter which is superior in mechanical strength and heat conduction rate and is beneficial economically in manufacturing. Basic performance of metal DPF such asloading test, temperature gradient test, thermal shock test, heat resistant test and back pressure was carried out. And then their experimental data provided key informations in designing and manufacturing such as detailed structures of metal mesh filter. Also diesel engine and vehicle of 2957cc displacement was tested under lug-down 3 mode and CVS-75 mode. PM reduction efficiency was 54.5% using metal DPF without loss of performance and fuel consumption.
