Antenna Radiation Efficiency of the Korean NDGPS Based on Radiation Power Measurements

  • The differential global positioning system (DGPS) transmits a GPS enhancement signal using a top-loaded monopole antenna in the medium frequency range. The top-loaded antenna in the medium frequency band can attain a radiation efficiency on the order of 10%. The antenna ground plane characteristics affect the antenna radiation efficiency. To improve the radiation efficiency, it is necessary to install the antenna on a ground plane with large enough physical dimensions and good conductivity. The antenna radiation efficiency is a primary factor in determining the DGPS service area. The service area of the DGPS using a medium frequency band is dominantly affected by the antenna radiation efficiency. To determine antenna radiation efficiencies accurately, the antenna radiation efficiencies of DGPS are deduced from the propagation power in this paper. Based on the deduced antenna radiation efficiencies, the service area for the Korean nationwide-DGPS is analyzed and evaluated.

  • A backlight unit for a 42-inch LCD TV was manufactured with red, green, and blue LED lamps. The luminous and light extraction efficiencies of the LED lamps were increased by improving their light reflection structures and thermal properties. The blue, green, and red LED lamps showed different luminous efficiencies as a function of the input current. Compared to the conventional red LED lamp, however, the developed red LED lamp showed very high luminous efficiency in a low drive current. Taking these luminous efficiencies into account, the fabricated backlight unit showed high energy efficiency, low power consumption, and a wide color gamut.

  • Based on the survey on aquaculture management status in Nohwa-eup, Bogil-myeon, Wando-eup in Wando region, this study aimed to estimate productive efficiencies of abalone aquaculture production using a stochastic frontier approach (SFA) and to find out their determinants. In the analysis, a Cobb-Douglas production function with an inefficiency term that follows an halfnormal distribution was assumed for the estimation of productive efficiencies. Then, based on the outcomes of productive efficiencies, determinants of productive efficiency were investigated using a tobit regression model. Results showed that the average inefficiency was estimated to be 10% and the production size would be a statistically significant variable for the production. In addition, it was shown that the cage installing method would be an important factor affecting to the level of productive efficiency.

Retrospect on Refractories in Water Treatment (기존 정수처리방법으로 제거가 어려운 유기물에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • As a basic experiment to develope biological pretreatment proces~ in water treatment, the experiments on biodegradability and isothermal adsorption of activated carbon were performed on refractories such as humic acid, $NH_3-N$, phenol and ABS which caused the problems in drinking water treatment. Also, the treatabilities on humic acid were examined in the continuous flow type reactors. The removal efficiencies of humic acid, $NH_3-N$, phenol and ABS in the biodegradable experiments for 5 days were 20.1%, 73.4%, 91.7% and 97.5%, respectively. In the isothermal adsorption test of refractories on activated carbon to be used as a media in the continuous flow type reactors, ABS and phenol are adsorbed easily, but humic acid and $NH_3-N$ are difficult to be done. The removal efficiencies of humic acid in granular activated carbon(GAC) reactor were about 7-8% higher than in biological activated carbon(BAC) reactor. The removal efficiencies of humic acid in biological fluidized bed(BFB) reactor were about 30% in GAC media, but were almost zero in sea sand media.

Case Study: Operation of the Juam Constructed Wetland for Effluent from a Sewage Treatment Plant and Diffuse Pollution for Two Years (하수종말처리장 방류수와 비점오염원 처리를 위한 주암호 인공습지 2년 운영 사례)

  • In order to improve water quality of the Juam Lake, a constructed wetland was implemented and operated for 2 years with the effluent of sewage treatment plant and diffuse pollutant discharged from agricultural area. During the summer season, average removal efficiencies for BOD and SS were 15.8% and 39.4%, respectively. Due to the mixed effect of vegetation, soil microbes and sediments, the higher nutrient removal efficiencies were obtained: average T-N and T-P removal efficiencies were 64.2% and 71.7%, respectively. The concentration of sediment was increased initially, and maintained constant throughout monitoring period. The highest nitrogen and phosphorus uptake were observed in Phragmites japonica. The nitrogen uptake was estimated as 0.235 DW mg/g while phosphorus uptake was estimated as 2.059 DW mg/g.

Tertiary Treatment of Municipal Wastewater and Bypassed Rainfall Treatment using by BAF (BAF를 이용한 하수의 3차 처리 및 by-pass된 우수의 처리)

  • The study was conducted with two laboratory biological aerated filter (BAF) reactors: denitrification filter (DF) and nitrification BAF. The influent flow (Q) was fixed to 48 L/d and total empty bed contact time (EBCT) was 1 hr. The flow direction was upflow with NRCY of 1 to 2Q. The secondary effluent was fed to the reactors and the influent concentrations were adjusted with some stock solutions to simulate by-pass concentration during rainfall. The study results indicate that COD and SS removal efficiencies were excellent and not influenced by temperature. Nitrification efficiency was over 90% at the influent loading less than $1.12kg/media\;m^3/d$, but the efficiencies were decreased in low temperature. TN removal efficiencies were 10% to 60%.

  • In Bok-Jeong water treatment plant, chlorination is the only technique used for disinfection of drinking water. This disinfecting treatment leads to the formation of trihalomethanes (THMs). This study was carried out to investigate the possibility of improving removal efficiency of THM precursor in the conventional water treatment processes by $TiO_2$ photocatalytic oxidation. Removal efficiencies of DOC, $UV_{254}$, THMFP were low in the conventional water treatment processes. With application of $TiO_2$ photocatalyst, DOC, $UV_{254}$, THMFP were reduced more effectively. As the $TiO_2$ photocatalytic reaction time increased, the removal efficiencies of DOC, $UV_{254}$, THMFP were increased. The $TiO_2$ photocatalytic removal efficiencies of DOC, $UV_{254}$, THMFP were increased with increasing $TiO_2$ dosage. However, over 0.6g/l of $TiO_2$ dosage, the efficiency reached a plateau.

Penetration Efficiency of Charged Particles in a Cylindrical Tube Connection with Electrical Voltage Difference

  • A cylindrical tube connection that has a voltage difference and is separated electrically by an insulator was modelled. The penetration efficiencies of charged particles passing through the connector tube were investigated. Typically, as the particle size decreases and the applied voltage difference increases, the penetration efficiency decreases. To assess the effect of the electrode geometry, various lengths of electric insulator and aerosol flow rate with a fixed tube length and tube diameter were used when calculating penetration efficiencies. The comparison of penetration efficiencies for various electrode geometry setups suggests that the penetration efficiency can be described as a function of the product of applied voltage and electrical mobility of charged particles. The diffusion loss from this and previous studies are compared. Further, an explicit form for penetration efficiency is provided as a function of a new non-dimensional parameter, $Es(=Z_pV/U_{avg}W);\;P_{es}=0.2{\cdot}{\exp}(-Es/0.6342)+0.8{\cdot}{\exp}(-Es/4.7914)$.

A Study on Improvement of Performance for Perforated Type Total HEX Element (다공형 유로를 적용한 전열교환기 소자의 성능향상에 관한 연구)

  • The perforated type element for a heat recovery ventilation system has been studied to improve the performance. Four holes of diameter of 6mm are punched out for each flow channel to break the boundary layer development and increase the turbulence. KS cooling and heating conditions and test procedures are applied for study. The efficiencies are compared to those of the typical element with smooth surface. For cooling operations, the temperature, latent and enthalpy efficiencies increase 2.5%, 18% and 8%, respectively. For heating operations, the temperature, latent and enthalpy efficiencies increase 3%, 5% and 3.2%, respectively.

  • A general concept on the definition of the second law efficiencies of thermodynamic cycles is introduced. The efficiency is defined to be proportional to the entropy generation divided by the maximum possible entropy generation. This way of definition of the cycle efficiency is clear and concise and, moreover, follows faithfully the concept of the second law of thermodynamics. This definition is applied to heat engine, refrigerator and heat pump. The second law efficiencies of heat engine and refrigeration cycles are derived, which are the same as the existing ones, respectively. The second law efficiency of heat pump, however, finds to be different from the existing one. Discussion is given about the difference and its cause.
