  • A fragrant microcapsule was prepared for use by students to reduce the stress of taking examinations. Rosmarinic acid was used as a fragrant oil which had the effect of relaxing stress, polycaprolactone (PCL) was used as a capsule wall material, and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as a stabilizer. The solvent evaporation method was used to form the microcapsule. The microcapsules were prepared by changing the stirring rate, the concentration of the stabilizer, and the molecular weight of PCL. The shape of the microcapsule was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The size of the microcapsule was reduced by increasing the stirring speed. The release rate of rosmarinic acid was decreased when the higher molecular weight PCL was used. When the prepared microcapsule was tested in an aromatherapy class, the microencapsulated fragrant oil had a longer release time than the original fragrant oil. The study data showed that this fragrant oil was effective for increasing concentration ability, reducing stress, increasing digestive power, and increasing memory for the students.

  • This study employs Bayesian multiple regression analysis using the ordinary least squares method for regional low flow frequency analysis. The parameter estimates using the Bayesian multiple regression analysis were compared to conventional analysis using the t-distribution. In these comparisons, the mean values from the t-distribution and the Bayesian analysis at each return period are not significantly different. However, the difference between upper and lower limits is remarkably reduced using the Bayesian multiple regression. Therefore, from the point of view of uncertainty analysis, Bayesian multiple regression analysis is more attractive than the conventional method based on a t-distribution because the low flow sample size at the site of interest is typically insufficient to perform low flow frequency analysis. Also, we performed low flow prediction, including confidence interval, at two ungauged catchments in the Nakdong River basin using the developed Bayesian multiple regression model. The Bayesian prediction proves effective to infer the low flow characteristic at the ungauged catchment.

  • The development of an effective long-term storage protocol for harvested fresh pepper is urgently required to increase the market for pepper products. The protocol must minimize quality loss, so that the product may be used either as a spice or as a raw material for processed pepper products, both in the home and in food processing plants. We investigated the optimum size of pepper fruits, freezing temperatures, storage periods, and thawing methods, to establish an optimum storage protocol. This study was conducted not only to develop freezing and thawing methods for long term storage of harvested red pepper, but also to develop processed pepper products utilizing the stored pepper. We aimed to expand the pepper products market and to increase the incomes of pepper growers. Whole red pepper, sliced red pepper, and crushed red pepper were frozen and stored at $-5^{\circ}C,\;-20^{\circ}C,\;or\;-40^{\circ}C$. The soluble solid content and the vitamin C level showed maximal stability at $-40^{\circ}C$, although total free sugars decreased on storage at all temperatures tested. Such Changes were more marked at $-5^{\circ}C$ than at the other(lower) temperature tested. The vitamin C content of whole red pepper was higher than that of sliced red pepper or crushed red pepper. Room-temperature thawing resulted in twice the drip loss seen on low temperature($5^{\circ}C$) thawing or microwave oven thawing. Brown discoloration was a serious problem with room temperature thawing. Total free sugars were higher in samples thawed at low temperature or in the microwave oven, compared to the level seen after room-temperature thawing. pepper samples thawed at low temperature scored higher in sensory tests than samples thawed at room temperature.

  • The aim of this study was to establish an optimum blanching condition for outer cabbage leaves to increase utilization of the byproduct. Outer leaves of Kimchi cabbages were cut to size ($4{\times}4cm$) and blanched at 80, 90, $100^{\circ}C$ for 1, 3, and 5 min. Subsequently, weight loss, pH, total bacteria, coliform and texture properties were investigated. Sensory evaluation of a ready-to-cook soup prepared from blanched outer leaves was investigated to determine whether the quality of the blanched outer leaves was acceptable. Both weight loss and pH of outer leaves of Kimchi cabbage were increased by blanching. Compared to raw samples, total bacterial counts decreased and coliform bacteria were not detected. The hardness of raw leaf samples was $1.5kg{\cdot}force$ (N). Sample hardness was 18.7~21.7% lower after blanching for 3 min and 34.8~36.7% after blanching for 5 min. Sensory evaluation of outer leaves blanched at $100^{\circ}C$ for 5 min revealed significant differences from the other treatments (p<0.05). In addition, sensory evaluation scores for texture and appearance of outer leaves blanched at $100^{\circ}C$ for 3 min were higher than those for commercially available products. The results of this study indicate that blanching can be effective for developing a food product from the outer leaves of Kimchi cabbage.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of cone protective net and the variation of cone and seed characteristics of a unique and rare dwarf stone pine (Pinus pumila Regel) population in Mt. Seorak which is in the southern peripheral of South Korea. Iron protective net (50 mesh, 25 ${\times}$ 25 cm) was effective in reducing birds and rodents damage to conelet, thereby it was possible to safely collect seed genetic resources. Early July was observed to be the most appropriate season to cover conelet with Iron protective net. P. pumila have ovoid-triangle shaped, wingless seeds and indehiscent cones, seeds dissemination is mainly by the hoarding behavior of nutcrackers and rodents. Statistical analysis showed that there were significant differences among individuals within population, and the mean characteristics of the species were 35.3 mm, 25.6 mm, 1.38, 6.6 g and 39.3 ea in the cone length, cone width, cone index, cone weight and in number of seeds per cone, respectively. Coefficients of variations in seed weight and number of seeds per cone were relatively high (21.7%, 21.5%, respectively) compared to other traits. Based on the correlation analysis between cone characteristics and seed characteristics, the length of cone and seed showed a significant positive correlation with the seed size and the seed weight, but the width and thickness of seed showed a negative correlation with the number of seeds per cone.

  • Knowledge recipes are packages of knowledge which arise from the process of combining the knowledge assets in the organization in distinctive ways. This involves converting them into useful outputs which are the ideal core competitive advantage enablers for companies. The major objective of this study was to propose a knowledge recipe for financial-sector state corporations in Kenya. The study adopted a convergent parallel mixed methods research design. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected using questionnaires and key informant interviews. The target population of the study was 1574 respondents drawn from all financial state corporations. A multistage sampling technique was used for the study. The first phase involved purposive sampling of the organizations to be studied whereby the four state corporations namely: Capital Markets Authority, Competition Authority of Kenya, Kenya Investment Authority, and Kenya Revenue Authority were identified. The second phase entailed stratified sampling of the respondents in three strata namely senior management team, knowledge management team, and general staff. The authors used a census of all senior management team and knowledge management staff while a simple random sampling technique was used for the general staff. By use of the Krejcie and Morgan table, the actual sample size was 358 respondents from all the four organizations. Data were collected using questionnaires and interview schedules. The qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis while the quantitative data were analyzed by the use of Ms. Excel and VOSviewer and presented using pie charts, bar graphs, and tables. The response rate for this study was 257 (72%). The study revealed that while most employees in the financial sector organizations understand their knowledge needs, knowledge types, knowledge uses and knowledge gaps, they do not have a universal knowledge recipe to facilitate effective knowledge management in their organizations. Consequently, the authors propose a universal knowledge recipe for the state corporations in the financial sector in Kenya. The ingredients of the recipe are legal-knowledge (18%), financial knowledge (15%), administrative knowledge (11%), best practice (10%), lessons learnt (8%), human resource knowledge (8%), research and statistics knowledge (7%), product knowledge (6%), policy and procedure knowledge (5%), ICT knowledge (4%), investor knowledge (3%), markets knowledge (2%), general knowledge (2%) and regulatory framework knowledge (1%).

  • Delineation of accurate object boundaries is crucial to provide reliable spatial information products such as digital topographic maps, building models, and spatial database. In LiDAR(Light Detection and Ranging) data, real boundaries of the buildings exist somewhere between outer-most points on the roofs and the closest points to the buildings among points on the ground. In most cases, areas of the building footprints represented by LiDAR points are smaller than actual size of the buildings because LiDAR points are located inside of the physical boundaries. Therefore, building boundaries determined by points on the roofs do not coincide with the actual footprints. This paper aims to estimate accurate boundaries that are close to the physical boundaries using airborne LiDAR data. The accurate boundaries are determined from the non-gridded original LiDAR data using initial boundaries extracted from the gridded data. The similar method implemented in this paper is also found in demarcation of the maritime boundary between two territories. The proposed method consists of determining initial boundaries with segmented LiDAR data, estimating accurate boundaries, and accuracy evaluation. In addition, extremely low density data was also utilized for verifying robustness of the method. Both simulation and real LiDAR data were used to demonstrate feasibility of the method. The results show that the proposed method is effective even though further refinement and improvement process could be required.

  • We obtained 424 Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi isolates from sporadic cases of infection in Busan during 1996 to 2005. We investigated the trend of antimicrobial resistance and molecular typing by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Of the total 424 isolates, 6 strains (1.4%) were multidrug-resistant (MDR) S. enterica serovar Typhi isolates, 2 strains (0.5%) were resistant to only nalidixic acid, and the remaining 416 strains (98.1%) were fully susceptible to the 18 antimicrobial agent. PFGE of XbaI-digested chromosomal DNA was performed on 50 sporadic S. enterica serovar Typhi isolates with the objective of investigating the extent of genetic diversity of these isolates in our region. We could find that these isolates were much more heterogeneous and at least 32 different PFGE patterns were generated according by dice coefficient, between 0.69 and 1.0. Restriction fragment patterns consisted of 13 to 18 fragments ranged in size from 20 to 630 kb. The results confirmed that PFGE would be an useful tool for investigating surveillance of sporadic or outbreak case and assessing clonality for S. enterica serovar Typhi in Busan area. Our finding will be valuable in developing rational strategies to control this pathogen and setting the basis of an effective PulseNet system in Korea.

  • The phenetic relationships among six natural populations of Equisetum pratense in Korea were investigated at the population level by constructing a tree based on Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. RAPD analysis was also conducted to estimate genetic diversity and the population structure of E. pratense. A mean of 26.7% at the six population levels indicated polymorphism. E. pratense was found to have fewer alleles per locus (1.267) and fewer effective alleles per locus (1.176). Genetic diversity (0.102) in E. pratense is lower than the average for species with similar life history traits. Total genetic diversity values (HT) varied between 0.112 (OPD-07) and 0.445 (OPD-16), for an average overall polymorphic locus of 0.141. Inter-locus variation in the within-population genetic diversity ($H_S$) was low (0.102). Asexual reproduction, small population size, and the colonization process are proposed as possible factors contributing to the observed low genetic diversity in E. pratense. On a per-locus basis, the proportion of total genetic variation due to differences among populations ($G_{ST}$) ranged from 0.129 for OPD-07 to 0.455 for OPD-09, with a mean of 0.277. This indicated that about 27.7% of the total variation was among populations. Thus, genetic variation (72.3%) resided within populations. This study contributes new information for research on the taxonomy and population genetics of E. pratense.

  • In this paper, we present a prism-based mesh culling method to improve effectiveness of continuous collision detection which is a major bottleneck in a simulation using polygonal mesh models. A prism is defined based on two matching triangles between a sequence of times m a polygonal model. In order to detect potential colliding set(PCS) of prism between two polygonal models in a unit time, we apply the visibility test based on the occlusion query to two sets of prisms which are defined from two polygonal models in a unit time. Moreover, we execute the narrow band culling based on SAT(Separating Axis Test) to define potential colliding prism pairs from PCS of prisms extracted as a result of the visibility test. In the SAT, we examine one axis to be perpendicular to a plane which divides a 3D space into two half spaces to include each prism. In the experiments, we applied the proposed culling method to pairs of polygonal models with the different size and compared the number of potential colliding prism pairs with the number of all possible prism pairs of two polygonal models. We also compared effectiveness and performance of the visibility test-based method with those of the SAT-based method as the second narrow band culling. In an experiment using two models to consist of 2916 and 2731 polygons, respectively, we got potential colliding prism pairs with 99 % of culling rate.
