This study was performed to compare the load-carrying capacities of the reinforced concrete structure between the carbon fiber adhesion reinforcement method and the external post-tensioning method and further estimate the effective stress of the reinforced material by analyzing the experimental reinforcing effect of each method and the behavior resulting from each method. As a result, it was found out that the effective stress of the carbon fiber reinforcement according to the carbon fiber adhesion reinforcement method had an unexpected value, and also, bearing of the stress was found to be far from sharing thereof. That is to say, while the carbon fiber was bearing the whole stress to some limits, it got to be momentarily ruptured as soon as it went beyond such limits. On the other hand, the external post-tensioning method has the advantage of inducing an initial effective stress by introducing a strain, and thus, it was found that behavior or bearing of the stress was also found to be a solid behavior of the steel wire. This method was also found to be more efficient and excellent than the carbon fiber adhesion reinforcement method in the reinforcing effect or securing the effective stress. Accordingly, we were to discuss the effective stress as comparatively examined, focusing on deriving of the more enhanced reinforcing effect on the basis of the experiment to which the field characteristic is added.

In order to study the characteristics of fiber reinforced bearing, the steel plates of laminated rubber bearing were replaced with fibers which have same effects of steel plates. The comparison of vertical test and horizontal test of laminated rubber bearing and fiber reinforced bearing shows that the effective damping of fiber reinforced bearing is higher than laminated rubber bearing. This result implies the high energy dissipation ability of fiber reinforced bearing under earthquake excitation. These fiber reinforced bearing can be applied to the low-coast building.

A fiber processing method, which might be an alternative for conventional refining process, was introduced. The method consists of repetitive, gentle, mechanical impacts on fibers, followed by fiber uncurling process. This method was very effective for OCC and BCTMP for increasing WRVs (water retention value) while keeping fiber lengths from shortening. For OCC and BCTMP, gentle mechanical impacts on fibers using Hobart mixer increased breaking lengths and tear strengths simultaneously at fast drainage level, and straightening fibers using kady mill increased those strength properties further. For SwBKP and HwBKP, only mechanical impacts using the Hobart mixer were effective on increasing tensile and tear strength at fast drainage, but there were no further increase by kady mill treatment. The strength increases of BCTMP by this alternative fiber processing method were exceptionally high. An extensive engineering development should be followed to actualize this fiber processing mechanism in an energy-effect way.

The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of recycled PET fiber made from waste PET bottle on the control of plastic shrinkage cracking of cement based composites. PET is blown as a plastic material and used in a variety products such as a beverage bottle. However, waste PET bottles are thrown after the usage, raising huge problems in terms of the environment. Thus, the research on the method to recycle the PET bottles indicates important aspects in environment and economy. The method to recycle waste PET bottles as a reinforcing fiber for cement based composites is one of effective methods in terms of the recycle of waste PET bottles. In this research, the effect of recycled PET fiber geometry and length on the control of plastic shrinkage was examined through thin slab tests. A test program was carried out to understand the influence of fiber geometry, length and fiber volume fraction. Three type of recycled PET fibers including straight, twist crimped and embossed type. Three volume fraction and two fiber length were investigated for each of the three fiber geometry. Test results indicated that recycled PET fibers are effective in controlling plastic shrinkage cracking in cement based composites. In respect to effect of length of fiber, longer fiber was observed to have efficient cracking controlling with low volume fraction in same fiber geometry while shorter fiber controled plastic shrinkage cracking efficiently as addition rate increase. Also, embossed type fibers were more effective in controlling plastic shrinkage cracking than other geometry fiber at low volume fraction. But, for high volume fraction, straight type fibers were most effective in plastic shrinkage cracking controlling in cement based composites.
In this paper, deformation characteristics of fiber-mixed-soils were studied at small strain range(0.0001%~1%) using resonant column test and triaxial test, and reinforcement effect was evaluated by the measure of maximum shear moduli. The effects of the major parameters such as fiber content, aspect ratio and fiber type on reinforcement were comparatively assessed. The specimens were remolded from Jumunjin Sand randomly mixed with discrete polypropylene staple fibers. Maximum shear moduli of fiber-mixed-soils increased by up to 30% and modulus reduction was also restrained in nonlinear range. Shear moduli increased as the aspect ratio increases. The reinforcement was more effective with fibrillated fiber than with monofilament fiber. The most effective reinforcement was achieved with the specimen of 0.3 % fiber content.
The composites of insulating polymer filled with conducting carbon-fiber were fabricated by molding press method. To understand the fiber aspect-ratio dependence of electrical conductivity the aspect ratio was varied from 4 to 10 The percolation thresholds of transition from the insulator to the conductor de-creased as the fiber aspect ratio increased. The percolation threshold of fiber-segregated composite in this study was smaller than that of fiber-random composite shown in other study. When the electrical con-ductivity curves were fitted by general effective medium equation morphological variable(t) decreased as the fiber aspect-ratio increased.
In this paper, we propose a hybrid time-division multiplexing and dense wavelength-division multiplexing scheme to implement a cost-effective and scalable long-reach optical access network (LR-OAN). Our main objectives are to increase fiber plant utilization, handle upstream and downstream flow through the same input/output port, extend the reach, and increase the splitting ratio. To this end, we propose the use of an arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) and an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) in one configuration. AWG is employed to achieve the first and second objectives, while EDFA is used to achieve the third and fourth objectives. The performance of the proposed LR-OAN is verified using the Optisystem and Matlab software packages under bit error rate constraints and two different approaches (multifiber and single-fiber). Although the single-fiber approach offers a more cost-effective solution because service is provided to each zone via a common fiber, it imposes additional losses, which leads to a reduction in the length of the feeder fiber from 20 km to 10 km.

The effective longitudinal shear modulus(LSM) of continuous composites is studied theoretically and numerically using 3-phase unit cell model. Circular, hexagonal and rectangular shapes of reinforced fiber are considered to predict the shear modulus as a function of elastic modulus of each phase and volume fraction of interphase and reinforced fiber. It is found that rectangular fiber shape in low fiber volume fraction($v_f$<30%) and circular fiber shape in high volume fraction($v_f$>40%) shows the higher longitudinal shear modulus. Also the obtained values of LSM for rectangular array and by numerical analysis are higher than those of hexagonal array and by theoretical analysis respectively. The reinforcing effects of interphase are more significant in cases of higher fiber volume fraction and circular fiber shape. Not only the spatial distribution and shape of reinforcing fiber but also the volume of interphase have a pronounced effects on the overall LSM. It is also found that the tangent moduous of 2-and 3-phase polymer matrix composites is insensitive to the shape and distribution of reinforcing fibers.
Composite specimens, which are composed MDF cement of HAC-PVA system were prepared by adding carbon fiber, hydrated silica and SiC powder, and we studied effect of additives on the flexural strength of the composites. All of additives is effective in the improvement of flexural strength of the composite specimens. The size of average pore diameter in the specimens which have high flexural strength property was small. Specimen mixed with hydrated silica was effective in the particle compact property. Flexural strength of carbon fiber reinforced MDF cement composites were improved because of crack deflection of carbon fiber in cementitious matrix.
