  • Purpose: Thermal sensation or thermal comfort was randomly used in many studies which focused on combined effects of thermal and acoustic environments on human perception. However, thermal sensation and thermal comfort are not synonyms. Thermal comfort is more complex human perception on thermal environment than thermal sensation. This study aims to investigate effects of noise on thermal sensation and thermal comfort separately, and also to investigate effects of temperature on acoustic sensation and comfort. Method: Combined thermal and acoustic configurations were simulated in an indoor environmental chamber. Twenty four participants were exposed to two types of noise (fan and babble) with two noise levels (45 dBA and 60 dBA) for an hour in each thermal condition of PMV-1.53, 0.03, 1.53, 1.83, respectively. Temperature sensation, temperature preference, thermal comfort, noisiness, loudness, annoyance, acoustic comfort, indoor environmental comfort were evaluated in each combined environmental condition. Result: Noise did not affected thermal sensation, but thermal comfort significantly. Temperature had an effect on acoustic comfort significantly, but no effect on noisiness and loudness in overall data analysis. More explicit interactions between thermal condition and noise perception showed only with the noise level of 60 dBA. Impacts of both thermal comfort and acoustic comfort on the indoor environmental comfort were analyzed. In adverse thermal environments, thermal comfort had more impact than acoustic comfort on indoor environmental comfort, and in neutral thermal environments, acoustic comfort had more important than thermal comfort.

  • The objective of correction is to let criminals receive education, be reformed and get vocational training during prison term by being separated from society and live as sound citizens after being released from prison. The facilities that execute such mission are referred to as corrective institution, and in Korea, some 47,000 persons are accommodated at 50 locations. Corrective facilities are facilities existing to separate and accommodate criminals safely, and return them to society after eliminating criminal nature from the convicts during the accommodation period. But corrective facilities in Korea representing the characteristics of corrective facilities vividly focusing on security. Therefore, while present pursuit of corrective facilities is to seek for reformation of criminals rather than separation of them from society, existing prison buildings are not appropriate facilitated at the moment. This study has the purpose to planning of indoor environment of corrective facility ward building as healing environment. Specifically, this study is contributing to propose a model of criminals healing environment equivalent to hospital facility to raise the effect of healing the criminal nature of criminals and cut the period of restoring them by applying healing environment elements and return the criminals to the society as successfully reformed social member.

  • In order to investigate the effects of foliage plants on the changes of indoor thermal- and hygro- environments, experiments were carried out in two rooms with similar physical factors. Changes of indoor environmental parameters according to the existence of plants, their arrangement methods, and the existence of wrapseal for protecting the loss of water from the pot soil were measured during certain periods in winter and summer season, using Pachira aquatica which is widely used as indoor plant and has higher photosynthetic and traspiration rate than other foliage plants. The data suggested that the existence of plants didn't affect directly on the indoor thermal environment, while relative humidity increased about 3~5%, regardless of season, by putting plants which had volume equivalent to 2.4% of room volume. In summer, there was no difference in increasing effect of relative humidity between parallel arrangement with window and spread arrangement in the room, but in winter the former arrangement was more effective than the later.

  • This study focus on shaft box facade, special form of box window construction. It consists of a system of box window with continuous vertical shafts that extend over a number of stories to create a stack effect. The subject building was decided by analyzing various types of exiting apartments. Shaft box type balcony was devised by setting up shaft space at a part of balcony. Air flow and indoor air temperature were simulated, performance of shaft box type balcony was compared with existing types using VE computer simulation program. Research consequence can be summarized as follow: 1) In the case of existing types, the change of window opening rate has only a little effect on the improvement of indoor temperature. But, air flow rate increased two times in the case that changed opening rate 20% to 40% 2) In the case of existing types, the growth of air flow rate has little effect on the improvement of indoor temperature. But, shaft box type represented the remarkable effect on the improvement of indoor temperature as well as the growth of air flow rate.

  • It was measured the energy expenditure in each season, the cold tolerance in winter and the heat tolerance in summer. Farmers' adaptability to the change of environment was compared with those of city-dwellers such as indoor workers and street cleaners to determine the effect of living environment, especially living temperature, on the health of human body. It turned out that farmers had experienced wide range of temperature that was higher in summer and lower in winter than indoor workers. Farmers and street cleaners showed seasonal adaptation in energy expenditure, which was high in winter and low in summer. However, indoor workers did not show seasonal changes. Energy expenditure had an inverse correlation with the temperature in work place where subjects spend the longer time in a day except in female indoor workers in Seoul. And It was proved that farmers and street cleaners had stronger cold tolerance and heat tolerance than indoor workers.

  • In modem buildings, the concept of open-space plan gets more acceptance as it supports more flexibility for the internal space design. This open-space can be easily subdivided by internal partitioning to provide each individual working zone. Although the partitioning forms each physical working zone, its indoor environment could be different Iron what the occupants require. Especially the air movement and contaminant spread in each working zone could be blocked or distorted by the partitioning, which may produce unexpected change in ventilation performance designed. • It is highly recognized that there is need for protection against indoor air pollution, as we realize environmental pollution is growing, For example, in an indoor environment, a person spends more than 80 percent of their time inside the building. Thus, concern about indoor decoration materials is growing, since they cause pollution in the rooms of an apartment, as well as in offices. As the indoor decoration materials become more diverse and lusurious, so the effect of VOCs(Volatile Organic Compounds) and HCHO(Formaldehy) is growing. The indoor decoration materials cause the Sick Building Syndrome, such as headaches, dizziness, or lack of concentraion, and they in turn cause serious deterioration in people's health. In this study, I probed the status of the indoor air pollution and carried on an investigation and analysis about the prevention technique. In doing so, I performed experimental tests and an assessment of the indoor decoration materials of an apartment. I also examined elements of the emitted and the emission. Finally, I examined the character of emissions, by changing environmental conditions, such as the temperature, humidity, and ventilation. With respect to VOCs tests, I applied the method of solid state adsorption using the adsorptive tube, based on the measurement of the American EPA TO-17, ASTM 5116-97, and the measurement of the Japanese Wall Decoration Industrial Association. The tested sample was analyzed by High Performance Liquid Chromatography, after going through the process of dissolvent extraction. As subjects of the test, Paint were selected. The process of this test is as follows; first, I figured out the character of the emission, by measuring the emitted concentration of VOCs and HOHC from the indoor decoration materials of an apartment. Second, I made a small-scale chamber and the test was processed in the chamber in order to suggest an environment-friendly prediction modlel development.

  • The noise map can be applied to predict the effect of noise and establish the noise reduction measure. But the predicted value in the noise map can vary depending on the input variables. Thus, we surveyed the several prediction models and analyzed the changes corresponding to the variables for obtaining the coherency and accuracy of prediction results. As a result, we know that the Schall03 and CRN model can be applied to predict the railway noise in Korea and the correction value, such as bridges correction, multiple reflection correction, curve correction must be used for reflecting the condition of the prediction site. Also, we know that the prediction guideline is an essential prerequisite in order to obtain the unified and accurate predicted value for railway noise.

  • Recently, pedestrians suffered inconveniences with moving on the next building due to the high-rise buildings. So, the number of passageways is increasing for convenience of pedestrians. Currently, people are paying attention to building energy saving. We anticipated that It increases the cooling load of the building and building energy by a passageway. We chose a passageway for a subject because people are paying attention to building energy saving lately. The purpose of this study was to analyze the indoor thermal environment according to the passageway. We measured temperature of building with passageway using a multifunctional device in order to progress the study. On analysis based on investigation, finishing material and glass area of passageway have an effect on indoor thermal environment. The result shows that the cooling load of building alter depending on characteristic of passageway.
