  • Nanoimprint lithography (NIL) has attracted broad interest as a low cost method to define nanometer scale patterns in recent years. A major disadvantage of thermal NIL is the thermal cycle, that is, heating over glass transition temperature and then cooling below it, which requires a significant amount of processing time and limits the throughput. One of the methods to overcome this disadvantage is to improve the cooling performance in NIL process. In this paper, the performance of the cooling system of thermal NIL is numerically investigated by SolidWorks Flow Simulation program. The calculated temperatures of nanoimprint device were verified by the measurements. By using the analysis model, the effects of the change of flow velocity and cooler location on the cooling performance are investigated. For the 6 cases (0.1 m/s, 0.5 m/s, 1 m/s, 3 m/s, 5 m/s, 10 m/s) of flow velocity and for the 6 cases of distances (50 mm, 40 mm, 30 mm, 20 mm, 10 mm, 1 mm) of cooler location, the heat conjugated flow analyses are performed and discussed.

  • The effect of periodic blowing and suction of upstream flow on the separated shear flow behind the vertical fence was experimentally investigated. The fence was submerged in the turbulent shear flow and DPIV method was used to measure the instantaneous velocity fields around the fence. Periodic blowing and suction flow was precisely generated by the syringe pump. Spanwise nozzle made 2D planar periodic jet flow in front of the fence and the effect of frequency and maximum jet velocity was studied. From the results, the reattachment length can be reduced by 60% of uncontrolled fence case under the control.

  • Steady and unsteady flows between rotating cylinders are of interest on lubrication, convective heat transfer and flow-induced vibration in large rotating machinery. Steady rotating flow is generated by rotating cylinder with constant velocity while the unsteady rotating flow by oscillating cylinder with homogeneoysly oscillating velocity. An analytical method is developed based on the simple radial coordinate transformation for the steady and unsteady rotating flows in concentric annulus. The governing equations are simplified from Navier-Stokes equatins. Considering the skin friction based on the radial variation of circumferential flow velocity, the torques acting on the fixed and the rotating cylinder are evaluated in terms of added-inertia and added-damping torque coefficients. The coefficients are found to be influenced by the oscillatory Reynolds number and the radius ratio of two cylinders; however, the effect of the oscillatory Reynolds number on the coefficients is minor in case of relatively low radius ratio.

  • The flow accelerated galvanic corrosion characteristics of a carbon steel coupled to stainless steel were investigated in deaerated alkaline-chloride solutions as a function of flow velocities(0, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6 m/s), pH(8, 9, and 10) and temperature(25, 50 and $75^{\circ}C$). The electrochemical properties of specimens were investigated by potentiodynamic test and galvanic corrosion test using RCE(Rotating Cylinder Electrode). Carbon steel did not show passive behavior in the alkaline-chloride solution. The galvanic current density increases with increasing flow velocity and temperature, but decreased with increasing pH. Flow velocity had a small effect on the galvanic current density at $25^{\circ}C$, whereas the flow velocity increased galvanic current density significantly at $50^{\circ}C$ and $75^{\circ}C$. This might be due to the increased solubility of magnetite at the higher temperature.

  • This paper is to experimentally investigate the effect of the through-flow on the absorption performance of a perforated plate system. The experiment is performed through the systematic change of the through-flow velocity, incident sound pressure level, and the geometrical parameters such as the porosity and hole diameter. From the experimental results, it is found that fur the nonlinear relationship between the acoustic resistance and incident sound pressure level there is no influence of the through-flow on the absorption performance, but for the linear relationship between them there is a strong dependence of the absorption performance on the through-flow velocity. It is also shown that the absorption performance is controllable by changing the porosity and hole-diameter in size.

  • DBD (Dielectric Barrier Discharge) plasma actuator was designed for aerodynamic drag reduction using plasma flow control, and the drag reduction was measured by wind-tunnel tests using 2D test model. At the zero wind velocity, the plasma flow control had no effect on the drag reduction because the flow separation and surface friction drag were not occurred. At the wind velocity of 2m/s, 9.7% of drag was reduced by the flow separation control. The drag reduction decreased as the wind velocity increased.

  • Spiral jet is characterized by a wide region of the free vortex flow with a steep axial velocity gradient, while swirl jet is largely governed by the forced vortex flow and has a very low axial velocity at the jet axis. However, detailed generation mechanism of spiral flow components is not well understood, although the spiral jet is extensively applied in a variety of industrial field. In general, it is known that spiral jet is generated by the radial flow injection through an annular slit which is installed at the inlet of a conical convergent nozzle. The present study describes a computational work to investigate the effects of annular slit on the spiral jet. In the present computation, a finite volume scheme is used to solve three dimensional Naver-Stokes equations with RNG ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model. The annular slit width and the pressure ratio of the spiral jet are varied to obtain different spiral flows inside the conical convergent nozzle. The present computational results are compared with the previous experimental data. The results obtained obviously show that the annular slit width and the pressure ratio of the spiral jet strongly influence the characteristics of the spiral jets, such as tangential and axial velocities.

  • Large eddy simulation(LES) of fully developed turbulent pipe flow has been performed to investigate the effect of Reynolds number on the flow field at $Re_{\tau}$=180, 395, 590 based on friction velocity and pipe radius. A dynamic subgrid-scale model for the turbulent subgrid-scale stresses was employed to close the governing equations. The mean flow properties, mean velocity profiles and turbulent intensities obtained from the present LES are in good agreement with the previous numerical and experimental results currently available. The Reynolds number effects were observed in the higher-order statistics(Skewness and Flatness factor). Furthermore, the budgets of the Reynolds stresses and turbulent kinetic energy were computed and analyzed to elucidate the effect of Reynolds number on the turbulent structures.

  • Effects of the Reynolds and Knudsen numbers on a micro-viscous pump are studied by using a Navier-Stokes code based on a finite volume method. The micro viscous pump consists of a circular rotor and a two-dimensional channel. The channel walls are treated by using a slip velocity model. The Reynolds number is studied in the range of $0.1{\sim}50$. The Knudsen number varies from 0.01 to 0.1. Numerical solutions show that the pump works efficiently when two counter rotating vortices formed on both sides of the rotor have the same size and intensity. As the Reynolds number increases, the size and intensity of the vortex on the inlet side of the pump decrease. It disappears when the Reynolds number is larger than about Re=20. The characteristics of the performance of the pump is shown to deteriorate, in terms of mean velocity and pressure rise, as the Reynolds number increases. The Knudsen number shows a different effect on the characteristics of the pump. As it increases, the mean velocity and pressure rise decrease but the characteristics of the vortex flow remains unchanged, unlike the effect of Reynolds number.

  • An experimental study on the flow over the axisymmetric backward-facing step was carried out. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effect of the boundary layer thickness at the separation point on the reattachment length and to understand the structure of the recirculating flows. Local mean and fluctuating velocity components were measured in the separating and reattaching axisymmetric turbulent boundary layer over the wall of convex cylinder placed in a water tunnel by using 2-color 4-beam fiber optics laser Doppler velocimetry. The study demonstrated that the reattachment length increases with increasing boundary layer thickness. It was also observed that the reverse flow velocity and turbulent kinetic energy decrease with an increase in the momentum thickness at the separation point. The measured velocity field suggests that the boundary layer thickness at the separation can affect definitely on the formation of corner eddy.
