  • Purpose: The 'learning cycle' proposed by Guilbert in 1981 has been accredited as an effective and useful model for curriculum design. Three components of learning cycle, learning objective, instructional method, and assessment are connected organically and form basic structure of curriculum. In this study, we intend to analyze how the learning cycle and its three components are applied to present medical curriculum and examine the points at issue of the learning cycle in medical education. Also, we try to identify the educational significance of the leaning cycle in medical education. Results: First, concerning the learning objective, it was identified that impractical and abstract expressions are major controversial points. Also, there is a need to make learning objectives covering entire medical curriculum. Second, because of various structural problems, it is hard to practice new and various instructional methods. Third, even though there is a growing need for medical curriculum to develop and utilize more various and detailed assessment and evaluation, it was revealed that only are standardized and traditional assessments mainly used. Conclusion: Synthetically, we have some suggestions as follows. First, it is necessary to specify and actualize the learning objectives. Also, instructional methods and assessments should be diversified. And finally, there is a need to build organic and delicate medical curriculum by applying the learning cycle to medical education more actively.

  • Issues on climate change we are facing, such as global warming, are very important as it affects our lives directly. To overcome this, efforts to reduce greenhouse gases emissions (e.g., carbon dioxide) are necessary and these efforts should be based on our integrated understanding of carbon cycle. The purpose of this study is to examine the research trend on carbon cycle education and to suggest the value and direction of carbon cycle education for students who will be citizens of the future. We analyzed 52 carbon cycle education related studies collected from academic research databases (RISS, KCI, ERIC, Google Scholar, and others). As a result, we conclude that resources are still limited and more researches on verification and utilization of developed program, development of accurate and comprehensive tools for students' recognition and level assessment, developing educational model or teacher professional development, providing more appropriate curriculum resources, and the use of various topics or materials for carbon cycle education are necessary. Students' comprehensive understanding of the carbon cycle is important to actively react to the changes in the global environment. Therefore, to support such learning opportunities, resources that can be connected to students' daily experiences to improve students' understanding of carbon cycle and replace misconceptions based on the verification of existing programs should be provided in the classroom as well as the curriculum. In addition, sufficient exemplary cases in carbon cycle education including various materials and topics should be provided through professional development to support teachers teaching strategies with carbon cycle.

  • This study explored different concepts by handing out the questionnaires asking the 6 students of the second year of junior high school who had no lesson on cycle "which words related to cycle are suggested?" In regard to the stimulation of the word 'cycle', students relate it to different fields that they learn at school such as biology, environmentology, and earth science. The analyzed results from the answers by students are as follows. First, it resulted in from analysis on the questionnaire and the half-structured interviews that students were unable to expand the concept of cycle to the scientific concept, and perceived it fragmentarily. Secondly, their understanding on the system of the earth was low and they understood the concept of cycle with a unilinear thought rather than a systematic thought. Therefore, we need to synthesize the students' unilinear thoughts on cycle shown through this study and an effective educational strategy for their continuous, systematic thoughts, is essential.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the composition elements and processes of the rock cycle that pre-service teachers in earth science field understand. Second-year students majoring in earth science were selected as research objects, all of whom attended teacher's university located in the southern region. The methods of arranging the composition elements of the rock cycle in a structured way and displaying the cycle direction through the arrow and describing the cycle processes in detail were applied. Pre-service teachers recognized 5 composition elements: magma, igneous rocks, sediments, sedimentary rocks, metamorphic rocks of the rock cycle and cycle processes was represented into 20 branches. The cycle type was analyzed by four criteria: linear, triangular, circular, complex, some pre-teachers did not complete the loop of the cycle or some showed incomplete understanding of the cycle structure simply displayed in one direction. The rock cycle is an important theme of the earth system education characterized by dynamism and complexity.

  • Soybean agglutinin (SBA) is an anti-nutritional factor of soybean, affecting cell proliferation and inducing cytotoxicity. Integrins are transmembrane receptors, mediating a variety of cell biological processes. This research aims to study the effects of SBA on cell proliferation and cell cycle progression of the intestinal epithelial cell line from piglets (IPEC-J2), to identify the integrin subunits especially expressed in IPEC-J2s, and to analyze the functions of these integrins on IPEC-J2 cell cycle progression and SBA-induced IPEC-J2 cell cycle alteration. The results showed that SBA lowered cell proliferation rate as the cell cycle progression from G0/G1 to S phase (P < 0.05) was inhibited. Moreover, SBA lowered mRNA expression of cell cycle-related gene CDK4, Cyclin E and Cyclin D1 (P < 0.05). We successfully identified integrins ${\alpha}2$, ${\alpha}3$, ${\alpha}6$, ${\beta}1$, and ${\beta}4$ in IPEC-J2s. These five subunits were crucial to maintain normal cell proliferation and cell cycle progression in IPEC-J2s. Restrain of either these five subunits by their inhibitors, lowered cell proliferation rate, and arrested the cells at G0/G1 phase of cell cycle (P < 0.05). Further analysis indicated that integrin ${\alpha}2$, ${\alpha}6$, and ${\beta}1$ were involved in the blocking of G0/G1 phase induced by SBA. In conclusion, these results suggested that SBA lowered the IPEC-J2 cell proliferation rate through the perturbation of cell cycle progression. Furthermore, integrins were important for IPEC-J2 cell cycle progression, and they were involved in the process of SBA-induced cell cycle progression alteration, which provide a basis for further revealing SBA anti-proliferation and anti-nutritional mechanism.

  • The purpose of this study was to analysis the 6th students' conceptions of the nature phenomenon focused on the systematic characteristics. For this study, 12 students of the 6th grades participated in special class for testing their conceptions about the water cycle in the earth system. And we analyzed the outcomes of students' conceptions based on SBF conceptual representation. The results indicate that most of the subjects perceived that the water cycle in earth system wasn't complex system maintaining its existence and functions as a whole through the interaction of its parts but simple system maintaining some actions between atmosphere and hydrosphere, geosphere, biosphere(biological world). And they didn't perceive the characteristics of the water cycle whose all parts must be presented the change of volume between vapor and water, glacier proposing the total hydro-volume are established in the earth system. Based on the results, it was suggested that the main goals of the schools' science education should be to provide students who understand the water cycle system as attaching importance to form with the skills needed to coherent understanding of the essential qualities for the nature phenomenon system.

  • This study aims at examining the concepts that apply in understanding the water cycle, to inquire into the concept related to the unit of earth structure that are taught in the Earth Science I. Analysis of word association, drawing and questionnaires showed that it was difficult for them to understand the water cycle within the earth system, and to put components into one integrated system together. In other words, it showed that they have a low standard of understanding in connection with the water cycle, that their understanding of water cycle are simple thoughts rather than systematic thought. It showed that they had an understanding of the atmosphere and hydrosphere to some extent, but they took no notice of the effect of the lithosphere or biosphere, nor do they have an understanding of its effect. Analysis of questionnaires showed that they have no well understanding of water cycle of cyclic nature, and that they have low standard of understanding of the components of water cycle.
