The size of the government is one of the most fundamental debates of open economies. In any economy, government plays an important role, but a pertinent level of economic prosperity has never been obtained in history without government. Therefore, the objective of this paper investigates the association of government size, economic volatility, and institutional quality for 182 economies from the time period 1996-2016 is collected from the World Bank database. GE is defined as the General government's final consumption expenditure. Health expenditure is represented by HE. Government expenditure on education is denoted by EDUEXP. The economic volatility is measured by the rolling standard deviation of GDP per capita growth rate, Population growth, Trade openness, GINI represented Gini index which measures the degree to which the income distributed or consumption expenses among citizens deviates from a perfectly equal distribution. The results proposed that economic volatility has a significant effect on government size and institutional qualities. Moreover, the paper extends the investigation by finding the link between economic volatility with government health and education expenditure separately. The policy implication drawn from this analysis is that controlling economic volatility may reduce the size of government and also significantly affect health and education expenditures.
This study reviewed the consumption patterns of high-income households and analyzed the ratio of major 6 expenditure categories including food at home, food away from horne, education, clothing, entertainment, and housing expenditure to total expenditure. We employed data from two different years (1997 and 1998) so that we could investigate the influence of the economy depression on the patterns and items ratio of consumption, For this purpose, the Daewoo Panel data were used. Also, data analysis was done with descriptive statistics, t-test, and regression analysis. The regression analyses were used to investigate the determinants of the high-income households' consumption patterns. The results of this study showed that food away from home, among 6 consumption items, seemed to be significantly affected by the depression, but still high-income households seemed not to lessen education expense. We included independent variables such as age, income, job, gender, debts and the likes. It was found that the age of reference person affected the amount of expenses for food, clothing, and entertainment. Other independent variables influenced different consumption categories. The results of this study would be useful for marketing strategies of fashion industries.
This study examined the expenditure on time-saving services and related variables. The time-saving services are food away from home, delivery food, dry cleaning, clothing care, helper and total service. The specific objectives of this study were: (1) to investigate the differences in the expenditure on time saving services according to social economic and demographic variables. (2) to investigate the differences in the expenditure on time-saving services according to role-overload, home goal orientation and work goal orientation. (3) to investigate the independent influence of variables related to the expenditure on time-saving services. For this objectives survey was conducted using interview. The data used in this study included 160 women living in Seoul from employed professional housewives, employed non-professional housewives and non-employed housewives. Statistical analyses were conducted using frequencies, percentiles, mean, oneway ANOVA, DUNCAN-test and multiple regression. The major findings were: (1) Wife's education, wife's age, income, tenure, level of living and employment status were significantly related to the expenditure on time-saving services by using the one-way ANOVA. (2) Income, education, level of living, number of children, and employment status explained the variance of the expenditures on time-saving services about 20%-39% by using a multiple regression method.
This paper explores differences demonstrated by changes of consumers' clothing expenditure in Korea and the United States since the mid-1990s. Evidence for this study was extrapolated from annual data provided by the Household Expenditure Survey, which was carried out in Korea between 1996 and 2008, and the Consumer Expenditure Survey, which was carried out in the United States during the same time period. The results include: (1) The proportion of the clothing expenditure decreased during the subject period in both Korea and the United States; (2) The decrease in proportional clothing expenditure was greater in Korea than in the United States; (3) Although the relative prices of clothes decreased greatly during this period in both countries, it was determined that the decrease in clothing prices in the United States was greater when compared to those in Korea; and (4) By using the DID(Difference in difference) model, the author contends that a decrease in clothing purchases contributed to the decrease of prices for clothing in the United States, while in Korea, the decrease in prices for clothing was also impacted by other factors including changes in household expenditures for education and communication.
This study compared the financial status between the employed-elderly households and the unemployed-elderly households, focused on income adequacy, expenditure adequacy and net wealth adequacy. Using data from 1997 KHPS, the lower financial status of the unemployed elderly households were found. Nine measures of financial status were used : income, per capita income, income-to-needs ratio, expenditure, per capita expenditure, expenditure-to-needs ratio, net wealth, net wealth-to-income ratio and net wealth- to-expenditure ratio. The results of this study showed that unemployed elderly households had 68%~77% of income adequacy and 72%~83% of expenditure adequacy for employed elderly households. Holding for gender, age, education, earners in the household, living area and home ownership constant, although the gap was getting smaller, significant differences between the unemployed-elderly households and the employed-elderly households were persisted. The result of this study indicated that the unemployed-elderly households and the employed-elderly households can not be regarded ac homogeneous group when public policies are developed.
This study investigated and compared the daily activities and energy expenditure of normally-weighted and obese elementary school children. The participants were 115 boys and 115 girls (6th grade) at ten elementary schools in Busan. Time spent on each activity was evaluated using the twenty-four hour recall method. 1) The general characteristics of the normally-weighted and obese children did not differ, although the normally-weighted children exercised and used stairs more than the obese children.2) Among their classified activities, the children spent most of their time resting, study, leisure, physiology and hygiene, commuting, and housework in that decreasing order. Normally-weighted children spent less time tying down and in conversation with family and friends than obese ones. 3) The children's average activity factors were 1.47 - 1.50. The normally-weighted children's rest energy expenditure (REE) (1391.4 kcal,1264.7 kcal) was less than that of the obese children (1711.4 kcal. 1461.0 kcal) . The normally-weighted children's daily energy expenditure was less than that of the obese, but energy expenditure per body weight was less in obese children than in the normally-weighted. In conclusion, sedentary activities and energy expenditure per body weight was less in the obese compared to the normally-weighted children. Programs to help children perceive and practice desirable physical activities should be suggested for prevention of obesity in children. (Korean J Nutrition 38(10): 847$\sim$855,2005)
The purposes of this study are to explore the consumption expenditure and consumption-cultural meaning in the process of marriage and to provide consumer education programs for premarital couples. For the purpose, this study uses a qualitative analysis including an in-depth interview and a participant observation. Major findings are as follows: Consumers preparing for their marriage experienced quite a different consumption context, which should be said an exceptional practice from the economic point of view. As the agency businesses for marriage becomes one of the fast growing industries, the marriage of Korea is now under the rule of popular consumption culture. Thus, the exceptional consumption abuse during a marriage process brings about the imbalance in consumers' daily life after wedding ceremony. In this point of view, we can see the importance of consumer education programs for the marriage process. The latter half of this study is devoted to propose the desirable model of the consumer education program for premarital couples.
The purpose of this study is to examine current situations about and factors related to expenditures of private education among pre-school children and to provide policy implications useful for future pre-school children education. The subjects of the study were parents of pre-school children under seven years of age, who lived in Seoul and Incheon area. The survey was conducted using parent questionnaire. The major findings of the study are: First, 86.8% of parents of pre-school children use private education and the average expenditure on it was 154, 446 won. Second, major factors determining their private education expenditure are educational level of parents, parents' job characteristics, household income, and region. Third, the most important reason for using private education among parents is to improve and excel in academic performance of their children. Forth, the higher the parents' expected returns from private education are, the higher the expenditure level of private education is. Fitth, the results of the logistic regressions showed that parents' attitudes toward private education was the most important factor in determining household economic burden associated with private education. The odds were 5 times greater for the parent group with strong desire for private education than for the parent group without it and 1.2 times greater for the parent group with high-expected returns from private education than the parent group without it. In conclusion, systematic, universal educational policies need to be developed to provide and support all the parents with pre-school children, given that their current economic burden is substantial. By providing such support, we can help parents focus on public education. This study examining current situations about and determining factors related to private education expenditures among pre-school children collected data limiting only Seoul and Inchoen area, therefore, future studies need to include data collected nationwide for generalizability of the findings. As well, development of more elaborated survey instruments and analytical methods would advance our understanding in the field.
The purpose of the study is to examine the effects of household characteristics on housing expenditure. The data from the National Survey of Family Income and Expenditure 1996 were used for the analysis of this study, and the final sample included 12,323 households. It was found that total housing expenditure was significantly different according to the tenure type, household income, household size, age, occupation and education of the head, or location of housing. The significantly explanatory variables in the model of total housing expenditure were owner and yearly-renter dummy, household income and the household income squared, mortgage-off dummy, Seoul and metropolitan city dummy, and employed-wife dummy.
This study examined patterns and determinants of families’supplementary educational investment on children. By supplementary educational investment, it meant the amounts of money spent on children’s education other than regular formal schooling expenses. The data used were from the 「1996 Household Expenditure Survey」conducted by the National Statistical Office. The statistical methods employed were descriptive statistics, cluster analysis and logistic multiple regression analysis. Results of cluster analysis revealed five different patterns of family supplementary education expense with relatively even proportion of families allocated to each pattern. The five education expenditure patterns were arts education dominant; other education dominant; gymnastics·clerical·computer education dominant; college entrance exam preparation dominant; and private tutoring dominant. Results of logistic regression analysis showed that the possibility of being in a pattern affected by various family socioeconomic variables. Important factors affecting there patterns were children’s schooling stage, residence, and mother’s education.
