Mathematics Education for Gifted Students in Korea

  • The purpose of this article is to introduce the gifted education of mathematics in Korea. We first discuss what is going on in Korea for mathematics education for gifted students. The curriculums for the institutes for gifted education are mentioned. Some focus of this article is proposing some teaching materials that are actively utilizing many basic concents of cryptography and super-string theory, along with careful use of calculators and computers. Many of the materials haven been designed with problem-posing approach on through invoking the cognitive conflict.

Design of STEAM Education Process applying 3D Printer for Computational Thinking

  • Many practitioners in educational field, recently, are seeking to improve Computational Thinking through SW education. The purpose of this paper was, for promotion of SW education, to design the STEAM education process utilizing 3D printer. The project-based education process emphasized the cooperation in the process of producing common results and proposed a new STEAM education process. The designed products are expected to be used in the elementary school classes by linking with the camp and teacher training programs and the curriculum.

  • Further education for teachers is required for reforms of elementary education curricula and their career development. Principles of relevance, selectivity and hierarchy should be followed in the construction of further education curricula system for math teachers of senior high school. The following curricula should be included in the system: A. moral elevation and idea renewal curricula; B. theoretic curricula on math education; C. curricula on math education design; D. curricula on math education research; E. curricula on modern educational technology; F. curricula on knowledge renewal and extension.

  • The traditional Chinese mathematics education is examination-contended and has its disadvantages. The mathematics education reform today is undergoing in a wider era and faces its attention on innovation education individually education, flexible and diversified education, give prominence to integration of the curriculum, the integration of teaching content and information technology, and the changing of teaming methods and teaching methods. These are all the new trends in the mathematics education reform in China.

  • Currently, school computer education has turned to multimedia education, and the related policies are run by each regional authority of education. School principals and parents show strong interest on computer education and the movement into multimedia education as well. In current school education it also seems that computer use is being integrated into all subjects.

Perception of Science Educators about Invention Education in Science Education (과학교육에서 발명교육에 관한 과학교육자의 인식 조사)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the perception of science educators (science research experts and science teachers) about invention education in science education. The instrument in surveying their perception consisted of the necessity of invention education in science education, the connection between invention and science education, and the demand for in-service invention education for science teachers. Subjects were 119 science educators (67 science teachers and 52 science research experts). They perceived positively about including invention educational content in school science education. They perceived that invention education was highly related to science education. Even though science educators have almost average level of understanding invention education, they demand in-service invention education for science teachers. Most of them referred informal courses to formal ones for school science education. Considering real life, engineering design, creative thinking in science education, invention method, and educational strategies can be effective for science education.

Evaluation of the Effects of a Smoking Prevention Program for Korean High School Students (고등학생을 위한 학교 흡연예방 프로그램 효과 평가)

  • Objectives: This study was performed to develop a smoking prevention program for Korean high school students, and to evaluate the effects of the program. Methods: A smoking prevention program, composed of five-session curriculum, was developed by modifying several smoking prevention and cessation programs based on the Social Influence Model. The program was applied to the freshmen of a technical high school. We surveyed with a questionnaire one week before education, one week after education, and two months after education. The number of participants for data analysis were 282(181 males, 101 females). Among those, 162(97 males, 65 females) students were allocated to the education group, and the other 120(84 males, 36 females) students were allocated to the control group. The effect of education was analyzed by multiple logistic regression analysis adjusted by potential confounders. Results: Among smokers, those who had education were more likely to quit smoking (OR=2.99, 95% confidence interval(CI) 0.84-10.64), and to decrease smoking frequency(OR=2.29, 95% CI 0.95-5.53) in borderline significance one week after education. However, the effect of education disappeared two months after education. The effect of education was significant(OR=9.11, 95% CI 3.22-25.76) for the increase of smoking cessation intention one week after education, and it persisted until two months after education(OR=2.94, 95% CI 1.18-7.35). Education was also a significant predictor(OR=1.97, 95% CI 0.89-4.37) for the increase of smoking cessation stage one week after education and it persisted(OR=6.39, 95% CI 2.42-16.86) after two months. Among non-smokers, those who had education were more likely to decrease smoking intention one week after education(OR=4.71, 95% CI 1.63-13.58). However, the statistical significance of education disappeared two months after education. Conclusions: The results showed that the smoking prevention program developed in this study changed smoking behaviors immdeiately after education even though the effect did not persist. However, this program was successful in increasing smoking cessation intention and stage of smoking cessation among smokers.
