In August 2021, we surveyed diseases of wild vegetables grown in Taebaek, Gangwon Province, Korea. During the disease survey, we observed severe damping-off symptoms in young edible aster (Aster scaber) plants in a vinyl greenhouse investigated. The incidence of the disease in the plants ranged from 5% to 20%. Diseased plants of edible aster were collected from the vinyl greenhouse, and fungi were isolated from petiole lesions of the diseased plants. Rhizoctonia sp. was consistently isolated from the petiole lesions. We examined morphological characteristics and anastomosis groups of nine Rhizoctonia sp. isolates obtained from the petiole lesions. The examination results revealed that all the isolates corresponded to Rhizoctonia solani AG-4 based on the morphological characteristics and anastomosis test. Three isolates of R. solani AG-4 were tested for their pathogenicity on edible aster plants by artificial inoculation. Inoculation tests showed that the tested isolates caused damping-off symptoms on the inoculated plants. The induced symptoms were similar to those observed in the vinyl greenhouse investigated. Damping-off of edible aster caused by R. solani AG-4 is first reported in this study.
In this study, we constructed a model of an area where the production and production amount of wild vegetables which are designated as short term income forest products for the whole country are self-sufficient for the representative Eastern Braken fern(Pteridium aquilinum)and Edible aster(Aster scaber). The difference between the existing cultivation site and the model result was examined, and the distribution of the cultivable area was simulated according to the near future climate change by the 2050s. The degree of agreement between the cultivated area and the actual native area was very low at 14.5% for Eastern Braken fern and 12.9% for Edible aster. Using the Maxent model, which has already been proven by many research examples, the cultivation maps through the model can guarantee statistical accuracy by considering many variables. To analyze future location changes, the RCP 4.5 scenario and the RCP 8.5 scenario were applie Edible aster d to predict potential future cultivable areas and compare them to the present. There was no decrease in the cultivable area due to climate change nationwide. However, in the RCP 8.5 scenario for Eastern Braken fern and the RCP 4.5 scenario for Edible aster, declining areas such as Gangwon-do, Jeollabuk-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do showed prominence according to the scenarios. The result of this study suggests that various models can be used for the production of short-term forest productivity maps and it will be used as a climate change impact assessment data for competitive forest products considering the influence of future climate change.

The perennial edible wild plants such as Aster glehnii, Solidago virgaurea subsp. gigantean, Allium ochotense, Athyrium acutipinnulum, Aruncus dioicus var. kamtschaticus and Codonopsis lanceolata have cultivated as the main income crops introduced into the fields about 30 years ago in Ulleung island. Soil samples were collected from 190 fields and assessed the effects of management practices on soil chemical properties at wild edible plant fields under no-till system. The strong acidic soils of pH 5.4 or less were detected in 45% of the soil samples. The level of soil organic matter was being held at mean $63{\pm}28g\;kg^{-1}$, 2.7 times higher than upland soils in Korea. Available phosphate and exchangeable potassium showed more than recommended levels of upland crops as $680{\pm}489mg\;kg^{-1}$ and $1.94{\pm}1.7cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$, respectively. The fields of Solidago and Aster showing strong soil acidity and high level of available phosphate and water soluble $NO_3{^-}$ were distinguished from other crops in analysis of variance and principal component analysis of soil chemicals. These results suggested that high frequency of acidic soil and high levels of available $P_2O_5$, exchangeable $K_2O$ and water soluble $NO_3{^-}$ were accompanied with the use of urea and NPK-fertilizer based on nitrogen in the field. However, further research is needed to understand the appropriate management of fertilization and the prevention of soil acidification for wild edible plants.

Growth responses of some intestinal bacteria such as bifidobacteria and Clostridium perfringens to the extracts of certain foodstuffs were investigated in vitro. Among edible mountain herbs, the extracts of several chui-na-muls (Aster tataricus, Ligularia fischeri and Aster scaber) had an inhibitory activity against C. perfringens on the agar plate and the water extract of Aster scaber worked selectively on it among intestinal bacteria. The water extract showed growth-promoting effect toward bifidobacteria such as B. adolescentis, B. animalis, B. bifidum, B. infantis and B. thermophilum in the broth culture. When the faecal inoculum was incubated in the culture with the extract, the population of C. perfringens decreased, whereas that of bifidobacteria increased by $10^3$ scale.$\beta$-glucuronidase activity in the culture with the water extract of Aster scaber digested with pepsin and pancreatin was lower than that in the control culture.
Aster species (Asteraceae) are widely distributed edible and medicinal plants, known to contain various specialized metabolites including polyphenols and saponins. However, systemic analysis on the chemical profiles of these plants have rarely been made. Here we analyzed the phytochemical constituents in leaves of 6 Aster species occurring in Korea, A. ageratoides, A. altaicus var. uchiyamae, A. glehnii, A. hispidus, A. incisus, and A. yomena, by applying a LC-MS/MS-based untargeted metabolomics approach. The analysis revealed that A. ageratoides, A. hispidus, and A. yomena are relatively rich in saponins most of which are expected to be previously unknown.
Chinese cabbage cultivation has been typically practiced in alpine sloped farmland in Gangwon province, and caused severe soil erosion by soil disturbance like tillage. Cultivation of wild edible greens such as Aster scaber Thunb. and Ligularia fischeri Turcz. could be one of alternative ways to reduce soil erosion, because their residues become stubble mulch after harvest, and there is no need for tillage every year. Therefore, the objective of this research was to estimate the effect of nitrogen application rates for the maximum production of Aster scaber Thunb. and Ligularia fischeri Turcz. in the early cultivation stages. Total N contents of Aster scaber Thunb. and Ligularia fischeri Turcz. increased with the increment of fertilizer application rates. Maximum growth of Aster scaber Thunb. and Ligularia fischeri Turcz. was observed with the highest rates of fertilizer. We obtained the relationship between Aster scaber Thunb. and N application rate, as y = $-0.296x^2$ + 73.82x + 5246 (R = 0.998). There was no significant difference for Aster scaber Thunb production between N application rates for 120 and 160 kg/ha. Also, the relationship between Ligularia fischeri Turcz. and N application rate was y = $-0.135x^2$ + 32.86x + 1529 ($R^2$ = 0.965) in the first year trial after transplanting.

Tissue factor (TF) is a cell surface receptor of coagulation factor Ⅶ and is the principal initiator of the vertebrate coagulation cascade. TF is found in high levels in some organs such as brain, lung and placenta, whereas blood monocytes, endothelial cells contain only trivial amount of TF when quiescent, and is stimulated to synthesize TF by infections or vascular lesions. TF is reported to be found in high levels in atherosclerotic plaques, cancer cells. TF activation in various cells in many infectious or immunologic diseases tells us the physiologic importance of TF. We screened many edible vegetables for TF inhibitor, by measuring the prothrombin time to detect the TF activity, and we picked Aster scaber to isolate the TF inhibitory substance. Aster scaber showed two kinds of anti thrombotic activity, one is TF inhibition and the other is elongation of plasma recalcification time. The anti thrombotic substances were found to be saponins which has echinocystic acid as aglycone.
Oxidant radicals are implicated as a causal factor in the pathogenesis of neurobiological disorders and neuro-degenerative diseases. The objective of this study was to investigate the antioxidant activity of edible plants against oxidative stress in bovine brain tissue. Fifty five kinds of edible plants grown in Korea were dried either by freeze-drying or hot-air drying (7$0^{\circ}C$), and evaluated for their antioxidant activity by measuring TBARS (thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances) in brain homogenates subjected to Fe$^{+2}$_mediated lipid peroxidation with or without the addition of botanical extracts. Heat-drying decreased the antioxidant activity of most plant extracts by 10~81%, compared with freeze-drying. However, Aruncus americanus, Ligularia stenocephala, Artemisia princceps var. orientalis, Petasites japonicus and Aster scaber showed very strong antioxidant activities regardless of processing, with or without heat treatment. The $IC_{50}$/ values of the methanol extracts from these edible plants were in the range of 0.093~0.379 mg/$m\ell$, which was lower than that of ascorbic acid (0.79 mg/$m\ell$). Thermal processing of some edible plants enhanced their antioxidant activity.
Highland regions for farming are generally located in slopes higher than 7%, where alpine farming systems rely on highly input agriculture management with great amounts of chemical fertilizer and/or compost. Most of the uplands is thus needed to maintain environmentally friendly soil management due to its impact on soil erosion and runoff during heavy rainfall season. Therefore, the objective of this research is to evaluate the effect of reduction of soil erosion by applying four wild edible greens (fatsia, goat beard, leopard plant, and aster). The lysimeter experiment of slope gradients of 15, 30, and 45% was conducted in an alpine region of Hoengkye, Kangwon, in 2005 and 2006. In 2005, both amounts of soil loss from the experiment plots cultivated with goat beard and aster were lower than one with Chinese cabbage by about 50%. The amounts of runoff of goat beard and aster plots were also lower than those of the others. An increase in the slope gradients was accompanied with an increase in runoff. Of the plots of slope gradient of 15, 30, and 45%, S of goat beard plots was 52.50, 108.33, and 171.50 kg, respectively. Soil loss of Chinese cabbage was 2 to 3 times as high as those of goat beard plots. These results suggest that goat beard and aster plants with minimum tillage reduce soil erosion compared to Chinese cabbage cultivation.

One of the problems for cultivating crops in the mountainous highland is soil erosion and nutrients runoff. Alternative cropping ways were searched to reduce soil erosion and to ensure farm income in the mountainous highland agricultural region. Three edible wild plants including goatsbeard, Korean thistle, and aster, were selected to test as alternative crops to reduce soil erosion in mountain agriculture of highland area. In the first year, the soil losses from the alternative cropping were 26 to 63 percents of the soil loss from summer radish cultivated by conservation tillage with contour and plastic film mulching. The relative soil losses in the second year ranged from 2.8 to 5.5 percents in comparison with radish cultivation. Rapid surface coverage contributed to successive soil loss protection by these alternative crops. Farm net profit of these crops was greater than that of radish. Monitoring of yields of Korean thistle or aster for further experiments, however, might be necessary for economic cultivation due to yield reduction caused by consecutive production.
