  • Let a and b be positive integers, and let V (G), (G), and 2(G) be the vertex set of a graph G, the minimum degree of G, and the minimum degree sum of two non-adjacent vertices in V (G), respectively. An even [a, b]-factor of a graph G is a spanning subgraph H such that for every vertex v ∈ V (G), dH(v) is even and a ≤ dH(v) ≤ b, where dH(v) is the degree of v in H. Matsuda conjectured that if G is an n-vertex 2-edge-connected graph such that $n{\geq}2a+b+{\frac{a^2-3a}{b}}-2$, (G) ≥ a, and ${\sigma}_2(G){\geq}{\frac{2an}{a+b}}$, then G has an even [a, b]-factor. In this paper, we provide counterexamples, which are highly connected. Furthermore, we give sharp sufficient conditions for a graph to have an even [a, b]-factor. For even an, we conjecture a lower bound for the largest eigenvalue in an n-vertex graph to have an [a, b]-factor.

  • Background: Natural forests are generally considered to be less prone to biological invasions than other modified ecosystems, particularly when canopy cover is high. Few decades of management of degraded forests by local communities in Nepal has increased canopy cover and altered disturbance regimes. These changes might have reduced the abundance of invasive alien plant species (IAPS) in forests. To understand the status of IAPS in such forests, we studied two community managed Shorea robusta forests (Sundari and Dhusheri) of Nawalpur district in central Nepal. In these two forests, vegetation sampling was done using circular plots 10 m radius at forest edge, gaps, and within canopy. Variation of IAPS richness and cover across these microhabitats were compared, and their variation with tree canopy cover and basal area analyzed. Result: Altogether 14 IAPS were recorded in the study forests; among them Chromolaena odorata, Ageratum houstonianum, and Lantana camara had the highest frequency. Mikania micrantha was at the early stage of colonization in Sundari Community Forest (CF) but absent in Dhuseri CF. Both IAPS cover and richness was higher at forest edge and gap than in canopy plots and both these attributes declined with increasing canopy cover and tree basal area. Conclusion: The results indicate that increase in canopy cover and closure of forest gaps through participatory management of degraded forests can prevent plant invasions and suppress the growth of previously established IAPS in Shorea robusta forests of Nepal. This is the unacknowledged benefit of participatory forest management in Nepal.

  • In the present study, the flow fields in between the propeller and the semi-spade rudder are investigated by using PIV technique to find out the influences of both simulated hull wake and propeller wake on the incident flow to the rudder. The velocity fields are measured at the propeller rotation angle of $180^{\circ}$ and the rudder deflection angles of $0^{\circ}$. Flow fields measured at each rudder deflection angle are analyzed in terms of angle-of-attack against the rudder leading edge. The hull wake increases the angle-of-attack more than that in the uniform inflow condition, forming the angle-of-attack of about $20^{\circ}$ at 0.7R(R=propeller radius) position. The distribution of the angle-of-attack is strongly affected by the stagnation point around the leading edge and camber effect of the rudder. These effects provide asymmetric distribution of angle-of-attack with respect to the leading edge of the rudder.

  • The variation of contact traction induced by different contact shapes is studied experimentally and theoretically. Considerations fer the contact shape are rounded, truncated and truncated with rounding punches. A fretting wear experiment is conducted with the contact configuration of the strip on the tube specimens. The strip specimen is pressed to form the end profile of a rounded and truncated with rounding punches shape. Wear on the tube is investigated, which is regarded as the slip region of the contact surface. Taken into consideration is the general solution of the normal traction in the case of the indentation by a punch with its end profile of the combination of parabolas. Then, partial slip solution is obtained numerically, which is compared with the wear on the tube. The radius of the rounding and the obliquity of the edge truncation affect the tractions considerably. It is found that the proper choice of the end profile can restrain the contact-induced failure such aswear.

  • The rear of the vehicle generally overhangs the rear axle. As a result, the rear of a vehicle swings to the outside of the rear axle(rear swing-out). In front steering vehicles, rear swing-out is not important because rear swing-out values measured outside the rear edge are relatively small. However, in the case of the bimodal tram with AWS(all wheel steering), the rear swing-out values increase because of the rear steering at a reverse phase angle. Off-tracking is defined as the radial offset between the path of the centerline of the front axle and the path of the centerline of the following axle. In this paper, in addition to determine the turning performance of bimodal tram with AWS, turning radius, swing-out, off-tracking and swept path width were also investigated.

  • Using backup plate is one of the most commonly used methods to decrease drilling-induced delamination of composite laminates. It has been shown that, the size of the delamination zone is related to the vertical element of cutting force named as thrust force. Also, direct control of thrust force is not a routine task, because, it depends on both drilling parameters and mechanical properties of the composite laminate. In this research, critical feed rate and thrust force are predicted analytically for delamination initiation in drilling of composite laminates with backup plate. Three common theories, linear elastic fracture mechanics, classical laminated plate and mechanics of oblique cutting, are used to model the problem. Based on the proposed analytical model, the effect of drill radius, chisel edge size, and backup plate size on the critical thrust force and feed rate are investigated. Experimental tests were carried out to prove analytical model.

  • The flame cell dynamics in 2-D opposed nonpremixed tubular configuration was investigated using high-fidelity numerical simulations. The diffusive-thermal instability occurs as the $Damk{\ddot{o}}hler$ number, Da, approaches the 1-D extinction limit of the tubular flames and several flame cells are generated depending on Da, and flame radius. In general, the number of flame cells are found close to the largest wave number from the linear stability analysis. It was also found from the displacement speed analysis that during the local flame extinction and cell formation, negative edge flame speed is observed due to small gain from reaction compared to large loss from diffusion.

  • In this study, the carbon steels, SM20C were machined with the tungsten carbide tipped circular saw to clarify the cutting-off characteristics in terms of tool wear. The results show that an improved performance in view of both the tool wear and the cutting efficiency was obtained by using oil base cutting fluid at the cutting speed of 100m/min with the feed of 0.06mm/tooth. The rake angle of 10$^{\circ}$ , clearance angle of 8$^{\circ}$ , nose radius of R0.1mm, and end cutting edge champer of 0.1mm$\times$25$^{\circ}$ are believed as the best tool geometries. The tool wear decreases due to using the saw of the disk of STS5 and the tool material of P30.
