  • This paper presents image data compression using a classified vector quantization (CVQ) which categories edge blocks according to the energy distribution of subimages in the discrete cosine transform domain. Classifying the edge blocks enhances visual quality of the compressed images while maintaining a high compression ratio. The proposed classification method categories subimages into eight lypes of edge features according to an energy distribution. A neural network, trained with the data generated from the proposed classification method, can successfully classify subimages to eight edge categories. Experimental results are given to show how the (1VQ method incorporatd with a neural network can produce faithful compressed image quality for high compression ratios.

  • In this paper, a new speech endpoint detection method in noisy environments for moving robot platforms is proposed. In the conventional method, the endpoint of speech is obtained by applying an edge detection filter that finds abrupt changes in the feature domain. However, since the feature of the frame energy is unstable in such noisy environments, it is difficult to accurately find the endpoint of speech. Therefore, a novel feature extraction method based on the twice-iterated fast fourier transform (TIFFT) and statistical models of speech is proposed. The proposed feature extraction method was applied to an edge detection filter for effective detection of the endpoint of speech. Representative experiments claim that there was a substantial improvement over the conventional method.

  • Miniaturized tissue equivalent proportional counters (mini-TEPCs) are proper for radiation dosimetry in medical application because the small size of the dosimeter could prevent pile-up effect under the high intensity of therapeutic beam. However, traditional methods of calibrating mini-TEPCs using internal alpha sources are not feasible due to their small size. In this study, we investigated the use of electron and proton edges on Monte Carlo-generated lineal energy spectra as markers for calibrating a 0.9 mm diameter and length mini-TEPC. Three possible markers for each spectrum were calculated and compared using different simulation tools. Our simulations showed that the electron edge markers were more consistent across different simulation tools than the proton edge markers, which showed greater variation due to differences in the microdosimetric spectra. In most cases, the second marker, yδδ, had the smallest uncertainty. Our findings suggest that the lineal energy spectra from mini-TEPCs can be calibrated using Monte Carlo simulations that closely resemble real-world detector and source geometries.

  • The fatigue load of a turbine blade has become more important because the size of commercial wind turbines has increased dramatically in the past 30 years. The reduction of the fatigue load can result in an increase in operational efficiency. This paper numerically investigates the load reduction of large wind turbine blades using active aerodynamic load control devices, namely trailing edge flaps. The PD and LQG controllers are used to determine the trailing edge flap angle; the difference between the root bending moment and its mean value during turbulent wind conditions is used as the error signal of the controllers. By numerically analyzing the effect of the trailing edge flaps on the wind turbines, a reduction of 30-50% in the standard deviation of the root bending moment was achieved. This result implies a reduction in the fatigue damage on the wind turbines, which allows the turbine blade lengths to be increased without exceeding the designed fatigue damage limit.

  • Generally, the discontinuous armature permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (PM-LSM) is composed by the stator block (accelerator, re-accelerator, and decelerator) and the free running section. However, the stationary discontinuous armature design involves the velocity variation of the mover during drive when the armature's non-installation part changes over to installation part as a result of the outlet edge of the armature. Therefore, we considered deforming the shape of the outlet edge at the armature and apply skew on the permanent magnet by displacing the two magnet segments of each pole. This paper presents the results of a three-dimensional (3-D) numerical analysis with a finite element method (FEM) of the force exerted by the outlet edge.

  • Ultraprecision machining technology has been playing a rapidly increasing and important role in manufacturing. However, the physics of the micromachining process at very small depth of cut, which is typically 1 .mu. m or less is not well understool. Shear along the shear plane and friction at the rake face dominate in conventional machining range. But sliding along the flank face of the tool due to the elastic recovery of the workpiece material and the effects of plowing due to the large effective negative rake angle resultant from the tool edge radius may become important in micromachining range. This paper suggests an orthogonal cutting model considering the cutting edge radius and then quantifies the effect of plowing due to the large effective negative rake angle.

  • In this paper, hierarchical retrieval system based on efficient feature extraction is proposed. In order to retrieval the image with robustness for geometrical transformation such as translation, scaling, and rotation. After performing the 2-level wavelet transform on image, We extract moment in low-level subband which was subdivided into subimages and texture feature, contrast of GLCM(Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix). At first we retrieve the candidate images in database by the ones of image. To perform a more accurate image retrieval, the edge information on the high-level subband was subdivided horizontally, vertically and diagonally. And then, the energy rate of edge per direction was determined and used to compare the energy rate of edge between images for higher accuracy.

  • Owing to the rapid climate change, a high-performance energy storage system (ESS) for efficient energy consumption has been receiving considerable attention. ESS, such as capacitors, usually has issues with the ion diffusion of electrode materials, resulting in a decrease in their capacitance. Notably, appropriate pore diameter and large specific surface area (SSA) may result in an effective ion diffusion. Therefore, graphene and multi-walled carbon nanotube (graphene@MWCNT) hybrid nanomaterials, with covalent bonds between the graphene and MWCNT, were prepared via an edge-chemistry reaction. The properties of these materials, such as high porosity, large SSA, and high electroconductivity, make them suitable to be used as electrode materials for capacitors. The optimal ratio of graphene to MWCNT can affect the electrochemical performance of the electrode material based on its physical and electrochemical properties. The supercapacitor using optimal graphene-based hybrid electrode material exhibited highest specific capacitance value as 158 F/g and excellent cycle stability.

  • A simplified experiment was performed to figure out the atomization characteristics of highly viscous liquid of rice-bran oil by applying ultrasonic energy to improve the atomization of spray droplets. A spray system, an ultrasonic system, and three kinds of pintle-type nozzles(pin-edge angle: 5 , 10 , 15 ) were manufactured. To investigate the effects of ultrasonic energy on the atomization of a highly viscous liquid, a phase doppler particle analyzer was used for the measurement and calculation of spray droplets data. Nozzle opening pressures were chosen of 3 levels, i.e, 10, 13, 16 MPa. As a result, it could be concluded that the ultrasonic energy was effective to improve the spray atomization when applied to the fuel by means of 3 different nozzles because of the effects of the liquid fuel cavitation and relaxation between molecules caused by ultrasonic energy. The improvement rate of the spray atomization by the ultrasonic spray atomization by the ultrasonic spray compared with the conventional spray was about 10% increase in the case of pintle type nozzles. With the increase of pin-edge angles the distribution lines by nozzle opening pressures are declined for both conventional and ultrasonic sprays. This means that the increase of the pin-edge angle improves the atomization of sprays.
