This paper descries the operation of a heater which was designed to control a motor that generates an eddy current. As the motor drives the rotor of an eddy current heater, magnetic fields are provided within the air gap between an eddy current heater's rotor and stator. Throughout the research, a rotor composed of 8 and 16 pieces of magnets was used to analyze which are the factors that affect the efficiency of this equipment. Test results showed that the magnetic fields are influenced by variable functions including the velocity of a motor and the quantity of magnets composing a rotor.
Unlike conventional Eddy Current Test (ECT), Pulsed Eddy Current (PEC) uses a multiple-frequency current pulse through the excitation coil. In the present study, the detection of subsurface cracks using a specially designed probe that allows the detection of a deeper crack with a relatively small current density has been attempted using the PEC technique. The tested sample is a piece of 304 stainless steel (SS304) with a thickness of 30mm. Small electrical discharge machining (EDM) notches were put in the test sample at different depths from the surface to simulate the subsurface cracks in a pipe. The designed PEC probe consists of an excitation coil and a Hall sensor and can detect a subsurface crack as narrow and shallow as 0.2 mm wide and 2 mm deep. The maximum distance between the probe and the defect is 28 mm. The peak amplitude of the detected pulse is used to evaluate the cracks under the sample surface. In time domain analysis, the greater the crack depth the greater the peak amplitude of the detected pulse. The experimental results indicated that the proposed system has the potential to detect the subsurface cracks in stainless steel plates.

When a high-speed train reduces its operating velocity while decelerating from a maximum of 350 to 50 [km/h], the train applies eddy-current brakes, which results in a deceleration time of approximately 3minutes. Therefore, a high current is utilized in order to obtain a large braking force. Consequently, the temperature of the electromagnet and rail increases significantly. In this paper, The thermal characteristics on a single magnet pole with convection heat transfer coefficient are simulated by using 2D-FEM. To verify the analysis results, the computed temperatures are compared with the experimentally measured temperature at stationary state. Furthermore, transient-state thermal analysis is performed to predict the magnet temperatures as the train is decelerating.

Conventional eddy current testing has been used for the detection of the defect-like fatigue crack in the conductive materials, such as aluminum, which uses a sinusoidal signal with very narrow frequency bandwidth, Whereas, the pulsed eddy current method uses a pulse signal with a broad bandwidth. This can allow multi-frequency eddy current testing, and the penetration depth is greater than that of the conventional eddy current testing. In this work, a pulsed eddy current instrument was developed for evaluating the metal loss. The developed instrument was composed of the pulse generator generating the maximum square pulse voltage of 40V, an amplifier controlled up to 52dB, an A/D converter of 16 bit and the sampling frequency of 20 MHz, and an industrial personal computer operated by the Windows program. A pulsed eddy current probe was designed as a pancake type in which the sensing roil was located inside the driving roil. The output signals of the sensing roil increased rapidly wich the step pulse driving voltage かn off, and the latter part of the sensing coil output voltage decreased exponentially with time. The decrement value of the output signals increased as the thickness of the aluminum test piece increased.
Local wall thinning in pipelines affects the structural integrity of industries like nuclear power plants (NPPs). In the present study, a pulsed eddy current (PEC) differential probe with two excitation coils and two Hall-sensors was fabricated to measure the wall thinning in insulated pipelines. A stainless steel test sample was prepared with a thickness that varied from 1 mm to 5 mm and was laminated by plastic insulation to simulate the pipelines in NPPs. The excitation coils in the probe were driven by a rectangular current pulse, the difference of signals from two Hall-sensors was measured as the resultant PEC signal. The peak value of the detected signal is used to describe the wall thinning. The peak value increased as the thickness of the test sample increased. The results were measured at different insulation thicknesses on the sample. Results show that the differential PEC probe has the potential to detect wall thinning in an insulated NPP pipelines.
The high temperature superconducting bulk can be used as the rotor of an ac motor. This paper presents the fabrication and test results of a ac motor with HTS bulk rotor. The rotor of a conventional squirrel cage induction motor was replaced with cylinder type YBCO bulk. Height and outer diameter of the HTS bulk was 15mm and 46mm, respectively. Eddy current brake using aluminium disk was used to measure the torque of the HTS motor. No load test, locked rotor test and load test were performed to examine the characteristics of the HTS motor. Test results show the motor can rotate at synchronous speed without any special starting circuit. Maximum output power of the constructed HTS motor was 408W.

In this paper, the results of an analysis of the dynamic behavior of the eddy current brake(ECB) system are presented. The measured irregularity of the track in Korean high speed line and the track irregularity given by ERRI(high level) were used for simulation. The wheel-rail profile combination were analyzed with different rail gauges. A model of the bogie with an substitute body for the carbody was implemented in the Multi-body-Simulation Program SIMPACK. The ECB frame was modelled both as flexible body and as rigid body. Four different driving conditions were analyzed. In this study dynamic behavior in general were performed to evaluate the design of eddy current brake system and specially the effect of damper was also studied. A comparison of simulations with and without damper shows that the damper have most effect for lower speed. The simulation results will be verified by comparison with measured data from on line test and also used for improving design.

The shock absorber is very important in various mechanical field. Without the shock absorber, the structure might be broken. For lunar lander, honeycomb shock absorber to absorber the shock by using plastic deformation of honeycomb has been used. It is cheap and simple to use but impossible using again without changing the honeycomb. The oleo-pneumatic type shock absorber is not able to use in the cosmos because it is vacuum and its temperature. This study suggests the hybrid shock absorber combined spring-ratchet mechanical shock absorber and eddy current electromagnetic damper. The ratchet restricts rebound of lunar lander and the spring converts the impact energy to the potential energy of the spring. The eddy current damper dissipates the impact energy by eddy current force without contact between the parts. This hybrid shock absorber is reusable while the honeycomb shock absorber isn't. The impact absorbing test of the hybrid shock absorber was carried out. This paper shows that the compared results the hybrid shock absorber with ratchet and without ratchet and evaluates the possibility of using for lunar lander.
A high-frequency vibration control method is proposed in this paper for Pumped Storage Power Plants (PSPPs) using Eddy Current Tuned Mass Damper (EC-TMD), based on which a new type of EC-TMD device is designed. The eddy current damper parameters are optimized by numerical simulation. On this basis, physical simulation model tests are conducted to compare and study the effect of structural performance with and without damping, different control strategies, and different arrangement positions of TMD. The test results show that EC-TMD can effectively reduce the control effect under high-frequency vibration of the plant structure, and after the additional damping device forms EC-TMD, the energy dissipation is further realized due to the intervention of eddy current damping, and the control effect is subsequently improved. The Multi-Tuned Mass Damper (MTMD) control strategy broadens the tuning band to improve the robustness of the system, and the vibration advantage is more obvious. Also, some suggestions are made for the placement of the dampers to promote their application.
This paper deals with the experimental evaluation on power loss of a double-side permanent magnet synchronous motor/generator (DPMSM/G) applied to a flywheel energy storage system (FESS). Power loss is one of the most important problems in the FESS, which supplies the electrical energy from the mechanical rotation energy, because the power loss decreases the efficiency of energy storage and conversion of capability FESS. In this paper, the power losses of coreless DPMSM/G are separated by the mechanical and rotor eddy current losses in each operating mode. Moreover, the rotor eddy current loss is calculated by the 3-D finite element analysis (FEA) method. The analysis result is validated by separating the power loss as electromagnetic loss and mechanical loss by a spin up/down test.
