It is well known that sound waves in the sea propagates under the influence of sea surface and bottom roughness, the sound speed profile, the water depth, and the density of sea floor sediment. In particular, an abrupt change of sound speed with depth can greatly affect sound propagation through an eddy. Eddies are frequently generated in the East Sea near the Korean Peninsula. A warm eddy with diameter of about 150 km is often observed, and the sound speed profile is greatly changed within about 400 m of water depth at the center by the eddy around the Ulleung Basin in the East Sea. The characteristics of low-frequency sound propagation across a warm eddy are investigated by a sound propagation model in order to understand the influence of warm eddies. The acoustic rays and propagation losses are calculated by a range-dependent acoustic model in conditions where the eddy is both present and absent. We found that low-frequency sound propagation is affected by the warm eddy, and that the phenomena dominate the upper ocean within 800 m of water depth. The propagation losses of a 100 Hz frequency are variable within ${\pm}15$ dB with depth and range by the warm eddy. Such variations are more pronounced at the deep source near the sound channel axis than the shallow source. Furthermore, low-frequency sound propagation from the eddy center to the eddy edge is more affected by the warm eddy than sound propagation from the eddy edge to the eddy center.

Eddy current brakes are electromechanical devices used as variable mechanical loads for testing electrical machines. Accurate modeling of eddy current loss is an important t factor for optimum design of eddy brake systems. In this second part, we propose novel formulations of eddy current loss in novel claw-pole eddy brake system. The proposed model for eddy current loss in novel claw-pole eddy brake system depends on the size of the claw poles. Also, in this paper, the flux density is measured by using the magnetic circuit of the novel claw pole. The model results are compared with experimental results and they are found to be in good agreement.

The detection mechanism of the flaw for the nondestructive testing using eddy current is related to the interaction of the induced eddy currents in the test specimen with flaws and the coupling of these interaction effects with the moving test probe. In this study, the two-dimensional electromagnetic finite element analysis(FEM) fur the eddy current signals of the aluminum plate with different depth of surface cracks is described and the comparison is also made between experimental and predicted signals analyzed by FEM. In addition, the characteristics of attenuation of the eddy current density due to the variation of the depth of a conductor are evaluated. The effective parameters for the application of eddy current technique to evaluate surface cracks are discussed by analyzing the characteristics of the eddy current signals due to the variation of crack depths.
The performance of an inductive position sensor is described by the accuracy and the dynamic characteristics of the sensor. Both of these performance indices are affected by magnetic hysteresis and eddy currents. In this paper, a model of an inductive sensor is presented. This model includes the effects of hysteresis and eddy currents. Computer simulation shows that the sensitivity of the sensor is greatly affected by hysteresis and eddy currents. Repeability error increases with hysteresis and eddy currents effects. Results also show that eddy currents influence more on the sensor performance than hysteresis does. To reduce the effects of hysteresis and eddy currents, the sensor should be made out of thin laminations with high resistivity.

According to numerical experiments, the Sokcho Eddy is produced at $37
5~39.0^{\circ}N$ by strong offshore winds, whereas the Ulleung Eddy is produced at $35~37^{\circ}N$ by an inflow variation of the Tsushima Current. These locations compare well with visual observations. The nonlinear 1$1/2$-layer model showed that most of the East Korea Warm Current (EKWC) driven by the Tsushima Current form the Ulleung Eddy that is larger and stronger than the Sokcho Eddy. In contrast, the nonlinear 2$1/2$-layer model showed that most of the EKWC travels further northward due to a strong subsurface current, thereby enhancing the Sokcho Eddy making it larger and stronger than the Ulleung Eddy. The Sokcho Eddy is also produced relatively offshore due to an eastward subsurface current in the frontal region. Using the 1$1/2$-layer model, when the mass of the Tsushima Current decreases, the two eddies are weakened and produce a circular shape. In the 2$1/2$-layer model the EKWC pushes the Ulleung Eddy northward after 330 days, next the Sokcho and Ulleung eddies begin to interact with each other, and then after 360 days the Ulleung Eddy finally disappears absorbed by the relatively stronger Sokcho Eddy. This behavior compares favorably with other visual observations.
This study investigates eddy transports in terms of space and time for momentum, heat, and moisture, emphasizing comparison of the results in three reanalysis data sets including ERA-Interim from the European Center for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), NCEP2 from the National Center for Environmental Prediction and the Department of Energy (NCEP-DOE), and JRA-55 from the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) during boreal winter. The magnitudes for eddy transports of momentum in ERA-Interim are represented as the strongest value in comparison of three data sets, which may be mainly come from that both zonal averaged meridional and zonal wind tend to follow the hierarchy of ERA-Interim, NCEP2, and JRA-55. Whereas in relation to heat and moisture eddy transports, those of NCEP2 are the strongest, implying that zonal averaged air temperature (specific humidity) tend to follow the raking of NCEP2, ERA-Interim, and JRA-55 (NCEP2, JRA-55, and ERA-Interim), except that transient eddy transports for heat in ERA-Interim are the strongest involving both meridional wind and air temperature. The stationary and transient eddy transports in the context of space and time correlation, and intensity of standard deviation demonstrate that the correlation (intensity of standard deviation) influence the structure (magnitude) of eddy transports. The similarity between ERA-Interim and NCEP2 (ERA-Interim and JRA-55) of space correlation (time correlation) closely resembles among three data sets. A resemblance among reanalysis data sets of space correlation is larger than that of time correlation.
In this paper, the eddy current sensor is develped for observing the ability of detecting defect with variation of frequency and velocity. The circuit designed for processing detected voltage and changing frequency is used for eddy current sensor to detect defect with variation of frequency. The ability of eddy current sensor to detect defects is studied with variation of velocity adjusted by rotating the circular plate. This study shows that the ability of eddy current sensor for detecting defect is increased and decreased by frequency. This fact means that the sensor has its best ability at a certain frequency. And the ability of eddy current sensor by velocity is decreased by increased velocity. Therefore, the eddy current sensor has to be developed with consideration of its operation velocity and frequency.

Eddy current are induced when a nonmagnetic, conductive material is moving as the result of being subjected to the magnetic field, or if it is placed in a time-varying magnetic field. These currents circulate in the conductive material and are dissipated, causing a repulsive force between the magnet and conductor. Using this concept, eddy current damping can be used as a form of viscous damping. This paper investigated analytically and experimentally the characteristics of an eddy current damping when a permanent magnet is placed in a conductive tube. The theoretical model of the eddy current damping is developed from electromagnetics and is verified from Maxwell program and experiments. From these comparisons, although predictability is not accurate at high excitation frequencies, the present model can be used to predict damping force at low excitation frequencies. In order to improve the prediction of the characteristics of an eddy current damping, the induced magnetic flux densities have to be considered in following researches.

Commercial eddy current dynamometers control the torque of ratating body (poer supply machine) with the field coil current being operated as a braking force. In this paper, we studied about the relation between the field coil current and the torque load of eddy current dynamometer. By the torque measuring analysis of eddy current dynamometer, it is linear relation between the brake force measured from the torque meter (e.g. load cell, strain gage or spring balance etc.) which is installed at the case of dynamometer and the multiply of shaft rpm by the square of field coil current (N$\times$Ia2). To prove the relation, it was experimented and showed that the torque operated by the rotating body can be measured with the shaft rpm and the field coil current of eddy current dynamometer. This result shows a possibility that eddy current dynamometer can measures the torque of rotating body without special torque measuring devices.

The metallurgical transformation ratios of metals have been evaluated by the eddy current method. Eddy current probes have been designed and applied to various standard samples. The equivalent impedance estimated from the eddy current measurement is closely related to the variation of transformation ratios in metals. It has been found that the variation of the impedance is relatively large in the samples where the transformation ratios of the samples are small. Both reactance and resistance increase when the transformation ratio is large. Sensitivities of eddy current test is increased with increasing frequencies and by inserting ferrite core the solenoid eddy probe. Our results have shown the implementation of eddy current measurement to the one-line nondestructive testing of metals.
