  • Previous studies of ethnic enclaves did not provide an adequate explanation of the geographical contexts and spatial implications of industrial production systems, as a result of emphasizing ethnic networks with stagnant participation from geographers. The objective of this study was to identify and examine the formation mechanism of Korean ethnic enclaves through the case of Bom Retiro's Korean garment industrial district in Brazil, specifically by performing an integrated review of the development path of Bom Retiro, the garment industry's production systems, and ethnic networks. The research findings indicated that the formation of this region's ethnic enclave was indeed highly influenced by ethnic networks; however, it was also affected by the development path of the region as a migrant garment industrial district and spatial convergence pertaining to the production systems of garment industries. Moreover, the formation of Bom Retiro's ethnic enclave also involved active participation of non-ethnic immigrant communities and local Brazilians.

  • The coffee price from the farm-gate level has been quite unstable in recent years because of the expansion of coffee cultivation, and the volatility of coffee price in the world market. The preference toward consumer's sustainable coffee has influenced on the coffee purchase by the world major coffee companies. With this background, Vietnam began to follow the trend of sustainable coffee cultivation by the major coffee export companies which cooperate with some certification authorities. However, a proposed program called 'Sustainable Coffee Program' in 2012 was initiated as public-private cooperation. This study attempts to examine how the program was initiated, and which organizations were involved in practice level, and what the program have achieved for sustainability. Finally, non-participant group was also considered on how they have been influenced from the existence of the 'sustainable coffee program' in direct and indirect manners.

  • The Trans-Central Asian Railway consists of the Trans-Caspian Railroad, the Kazalinsk Route, the Turk-Sib, and the Trans-Kazakhstan Trunk Line. Currently, one-fifth of the residents in Central Asia are living around these railroads on which 70% of the economic activities in the region depends. The construction of the railroads in Central Asia was motivated by the Russian Empire's competition 'with its maritime rival, the United Kingdom, over the Eurasian heartland in a geostrategic sense. Using the railroads, the Russian Empire aspired to connect its central industrial regions in European Russia with the remote frontier areas in the Central Asian republics and to increase economic specialization of the region. After the breakdown of the USSR, however, the rail network, which had well been linked among the regions in the former Soviet nations, has been in a deteriorated linkage with their non-Soviet neighboring nations. Despite a lot of problems to be solved, the Trans-Central Asian rail network is expected to play a crucial role as a land bridge between East Asia and Europe as well as between Russia/the Baltic sea and the Indian Ocean/the Persian Gulf in the long-term.

  • Estimating the implicit value of housing assets is a very important task for participants in the housing market. Until now, such estimations were usually carried out using multiple regression analysis based on the inherent characteristics of the estate. However, in this paper, we examine the estimation capabilities of the Artificial Neural Network(ANN) and its 'Deep Learning' faculty. To make use of the strength of the neural network model, which allows the recognition of patterns in data by modeling non-linear and complex relationships between variables, this study utilizes geographic coordinates (i.e. longitudinal/latitudinal points) as the locational factor of housing prices. Specifically, we built a dataset including structural and spatiotemporal factors based on the hedonic price model and compared the estimation performance of the models with and without geographic coordinate variables. The results show that high estimation performance can be achieved in ANN by explaining the spatial effect on housing prices through the geographic location.

  • In this study, we estimate the quantile-regression framework of the shipping industry for the Capesize used ship, which is a typical raw material transportation from January 2000 to December 2021. This research aims two main contributions. First, we analyze the relationship between the Capesize used ship, which is a typical type in the raw material transportation market, and the freight market, for which mixed empirical analysis results are presented. Second, we present an empirical analysis model that considers the structural transformation proposed in the Hyunsok Kim and Myung-hee Chang(2020a) study in quantile-regression. In structural change investigations, the empirical results confirm that the quantile model is able to overcome the problems caused by non-stationarity in time series analysis. Then, the long-run relationship of the co-integration framework divided into long and short-run effects of exogenous variables, and this is extended to a prediction model subdivided by quantile. The results are the basis for extending the analysis based on the shipping theory to artificial intelligence and machine learning approaches.

  • Aggregate collection is taking place in many areas in Korea, resulting in large cut slopes or large amounts of cut rocks. If the development site for such aggregate collection is a stratum accompanied by sulfide minerals, Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) may occur, which may cause environmental pollution in the development site and surrounding areas. As a result of the study on forest aggregate samples, most of the samples were classified as acid-forming potential samples, and among them, some samples from Gwangju, Goyang, and Sokcho were classified as potential acid-generating samples. This can be expected to affect the quality of aggregates when a large amount of aggregate is used in the future. Therefore, it is judged that these forest aggregates need to be managed when they are used. By predicting the occurrence of ARD through the acid-generating ability test, it is expected that economic losses that may occur in the future can be reduced, and it is judged that the problem of surrounding environmental pollution can be further alleviated.

  • The public assistance scheme plays more important role in income maintenance for poor elders than the public pension does due to insufficient coverage of the public pension resulted from late introduction of it in Korea. However, only limited numbers of poor elders are financially protected by the public assistance contrary to the general perception that the elderly population most benefits from public aids. Based on data set of 2000 from the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study, this study analysed the size, composition and characteristics of poor elders excluded from the public assistance, and determinants of the elderly's participation in it. Findings of the study can be summarized as follows: (1) More than half of poor elders are excluded from the public assistance although their economic status is similar with that of recipients, which may cause income reversal between recipients and non-recipients. (2) It was identified that non-recipient poor elders especially those with same income level of recipients of the National Livelihood Guarantees(NLG) are actually in desperate need of public aids considering their serious financial conditions. (3) Participation in public assistance among the elderly is more affected by socio-demographic factors that reflect family conditions than by economic factors, which is mostly caused by the strict eligibility criteria of the public assistance that reinforces family duty of financial support for elderly relatives in Korea. Policy implications for more effective income security for poor elders include revising inappropriate eligibility criteria of the NLG concerning family obligations, expanding the coverage of the old age allowance for poor elders to near-poor elders, and providing work opportunities to non-recipient poor elders to supplement their income deficit.
