Diel Activity Patterns of Water Deer (Hydropotes inermis) and Wild Boar (Sus scrofa) in a Suburban Area Monitored by Long-term Camera-Trapping (장기 카메라트래핑 모니터링 자료를 활용한 도시근교의 고라니 및 멧돼지 일주기성 연구)

  • This study aimed to figure out diel activity patterns of water deer and wild boar, whose habitat is disturbed by human activity in a suburban area. Photographic data of water deer and wild boar collected by 18 camera traps from January 2021 to November 2022 was categorized into four diel periods (dawn, day, dusk, and night), and converted into frequencies per 100 CTD (Camera Trap-Days) for seasonal and spatial diel activity pattern analysis. Water deer exhibited intense nocturnality in fall, and wild boar did in fall and winter. During the fall, water deer's night-time capture rate was the highest (61.9%), and day-time photographic rate was the lowest (13.9%) among other seasons. During the fall and winter, wild boar's night-time photographic rate was relatively high (77.6%, 78.0%, respectively), and day-time photographic rate was relatively low (0.7%, 1.8%) in comparison with other seasons. In spatial diel activity analysis, both water deer and wild boar showed a tendency to avoid humans, especially near trails during day-time hours. The day-time photographic rate of water deer in trail-near group was 12.1% and trail-far group was 24.6%. The day-time photographic rate of wild boar was 3.4%, 5.7%, respectively. Because the diel activity patterns of wildlife reflect human disturbance, this study provides useful ecological information for developing appropriate management plans for the coexistence of water deer and wild boar in suburban areas.

Potential Effects of Hikers on Activity Pattern of Mammals in Baekdudaegan Protected Area (등산객의 활동이 백두대간보호지역에 서식하는 포유류 군집의 활동 패턴에 미치는 잠재적 영향)

  • This study was conducted to clarify the daily activity patterns overlap between hikers and mammals from 2015 to 2019 in the Baekdudaegan protected area. To investigate relationship behaviors between hikers and mammals, we set the camera traps on the ridge of the Baekdudaegan protected area. Daily activity patterns of yellow-throated marten (Martes flavigula) and Siberian chipmunk (Eutamias sibiricus) were highly overlapped with hiker total study periods. Moreover, daily activity patterns of Siberian roe deer (Caperohus pygargus) and water deer (Hydropotes inermis) were highly overlapped with hikers only in spring. In winter, daily activity patterns of wild boar (Sus scrofa) were overlapped with hikers. However, leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis), raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides), and Eurasian badger (Meles leucurus) did not significantly overlap with hikers during the study periods. The daily activity patterns of 8 mammals differed by species-specific behavior and temporal characteristics. Overlap of daily activity patterns between mammals and hikers were differed in each season. Differences in daily activity pattern overlap between mammals and humans may lead to differences in human impact on mammal populations. Information on the interaction between hikers and mammals on species-specific and temporal-specific behavior could be basic ecological data for management and conservation of mammal populations and their habitats.

A Study on the Sex Ratio and Morphological Differences Between the Sexes of Narrow-mouthed Toad (Kaloula borealis) Inhabiting the Godeok District in Seoul (서울시 고덕지구에 서식하는 맹꽁이(Kaloula borealis)의 성비 및 성별에 따른 형태 차이에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to collect basic information about Narrow-mouthed Toad (Kaloula borealis) by analyzing the morphological characteristics of Narrow-mouthed Toad (Kaloula borealis) caught in pitfall traps. The study site is in Godeok-dong, Gangdong-gu, Seoul, and a total of 1,063 individuals were captured using pitfall traps for a total of four years from July 2016 to November 2020. Narrow-mouthed Toad (Kaloula borealis) were classified into adult and immature individuals based on length (SVL), and differences in sex ratio and shape were confirmed for adults. As a result, all adult males had a pair of white bands observed in the abdomen, and females had eggs identified in the abdomen. Through previous studies, a pair of white bands on the abdomen were determined to be male gonads, and were also confirmed in some immature individuals. The sex of the Narrow-mouthed Toad (Kaloula borealis) could be distinguished by the presence or absence of a pair of white bands located on the abdomen, and it is believed that this can be used as a sex classification method that can be confirmed in the field. During the study period, the adult sex ratio was confirmed to be 697 male (65.57%) and 366 female (34.43%), with more males. It is expected that this method of sex ratio and male/female sex ratio will be used not only for species restoration and monitoring of migration and alternative habitats due to development, but also as basic data for various ecological studies.

Evaluation of stingless bee (Tetragonula pagdeni) honey properties and melissopalynological analysis from different geographical origins in Thailand

  • Background: Honey from different geographical origins can have distinct characteristics due to variations in the floral sources available to stingless bees in different regions. The most abundant stingless bee for meliponiculture in Thailand is Tetragonula pagdeni. However, only a few studies about the properties of honey from a different origin were carried out. The objective of this study was focused on a comparative study to evaluate the melissopalynological, physicochemical, antioxidant activities, and total phenolic contents (TPCs) of stingless bee honey produced by T. pagdeni from different parts of Thailand. Results: Fifty honey samples were collected from five locations, and the physicochemical properties of T. pagdeni honey samples are acidic (pH 3.02-4.15) and have a high water content (18.42-25.06 %w/w), which is related to the regions of meliponary. Melisopalynological analysis reveals the predominant pollen from Melaleuca quinquenervia, Cocus nuciferca, Nephelium lappaceum, Salacca wallichiana, and multiflora honey. All honey samples were analyzed for their TPC and 2,2-diphenyl1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity. The results show that all samples had high TPC and antioxidant activities with a strong correlation (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The data from this study indicates the importance of geographical origin, which links physicochemical properties, phenolic compounds, and functional characteristics to their floral. Besides, the floral sources and harvesting location affected the properties of stingless bee honey. Our results identify Melaleuca honey as a promising source of phenolic content and antioxidant activity that can be used as a functional food, as well as multiflora and Cocus honey. However, further studies are required to characterize the phenolic compound and its biological potential, which could be a stingless bee honey biomarker and quality control, simultaneously with the physicochemical analysis.

Shading Treatment-Induced Changes in Physiological Characteristics of Thermopsis lupinoides (L.) Link (차광처리에 따른 갯활량나물의 생리 특성)

  • This study aimed to investigate the impact of light intensity, manipulated through different shading levels, on the growth and physiological responses of Thermopsis lupinoides. To assess the effects of shading treatments, we examined leaf mass per area, chlorophyll content, chlorophyll fluorescence response, and photosynthetic characteristics. T. lupinoidesexhibited adaptive responses under low light conditions (50% shading), showing increased leaf area and decreased leaf mass per area as shading levels increased. These changes indicate morpho-physiological adaptations to reduced light availability. At 50% shading, the physiological and ecological responses were favorable, with optimal photosynthetic functions including chlorophyll content, photosynthesis saturation point, photosynthetic rate, carbon fixation efficiency, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, and water use efficiency. However, at 95% shading, the essential light conditions for growth were not met, significantly impairing photosynthetic functions. Consequently, 50% shading was determined to be the most optimal condition for T. lupinoides growth. These findings provide valuable insights for effective ex-situconservation practices and site selection for T. lupinoides, serving as foundational data for habitat restoration efforts.

Marine Algal Flora and Community Structure in Kijang on the Southern East Coast of Korea (부산시 기장군 연안의 해조상 및 군집 특성)

  • Marine algal flora and community structure were investigated at four sites in Kijang area on the southern east coast of Korea in August 2006 and August 2009, respectively. A total of 54 seaweeds including 6 green, 10 brown, 38 red were collected and identified. Of 54 seaweeds, 35 species were found throughout the survey period. Mean biomass in wet weight was from $616.0\;g\;m^{-2}$ to $1,462.4\;g\;m^{-2}$2 in 2006, and $354.8\;g\;m^{-2}$ to $965.6\;g\;m^{-2}$ in 2009. Maximum biomass was recorded at Mundong site, and minimum was recorded at Seoam (2006) and Dongbaek (2009) sites. The flora investigated (2006, 2009) could be classified into six functional groups such as coarsely branched form (58.7%, 58.1%), thick leathery form (10.9%, 11.6%), filamentous form (13.0%, 9.3%), crustose form (6.5%, 9.3%), sheet form (6.5%, 7.0%) and jointed calcareous form (4.3%, 4.7%) during survey period. The R/P, C/P and (R+C)/P values reflecting flora characteristics were 4.00, 0.75 and 4.75 at 2006, and 5.17, 1.00 and 6.17 at 2009, respectively. Therefore, the number of marine algae species and biomass in Kijang area were similar when they were comparing with the previous data. It suggest that any changes of seaweed diversity have not been observed in Kijang coastal area before and after the anthropogenic construction between 2006 and 2009.

A Case Study of Middle School Students' Conceptual Change on the Concept of Force: Conceptual Ecological Approach (중학생의 힘의 개념변화 사례 연구: 개념생태적 접근)

  • This study explored the types of conceptual change of 'force' within middle school students' conceptual ecologies. This qualitative study was implemented with the use of classroom observations and two interviews with the participants. 11 middle school students (7 females and 4 males) joined in this study. The interviews with the participants were conducted individually before and after the 'force' unit. The collected data were all transcribed and analyzed interpretively. The results of this study consisted of two parts. First, the participants' conceptual ecologies of 'force' were categorized into 4: epistemological commitments (fixed or interactional explanatory consistency), analogy (attribute, working), metaphysical beliefs (people-oriented ontology, animism, causationism, mixed), and past experiences. Second, two representative cases including 'stable' and 'transitional' states were explained based on the interactions within their own conceptual ecologies. We can see students' conceptions with the integrated perspective in the sense that this results tried to get contextual and interactional understandings of the status of the conception and the possibilities of conceptual change. In addition, it implied that conceptual change research should have the perspective of conceptual ecology evolution in the future.

A Structural Relationship of Topography, Developed Areas, and Riparian Vegetation on the Concentration of Total Nitrogen in Streams (지형, 개발지역, 수변림과 하천 내 총질소 농도와의 구조적 관계 분석)

  • Land use in watersheds has been shown to be a major driving factor in determining the status of the water quality of streams. In this light, scientists have been investigating the roles of riparian vegetation on the relationships between land use in watersheds and the associated stream water quality. Numerous studies reported that riparian vegetation could alleviate the adverse effects caused by land use in watersheds and on stream water quality through various hydrological, biochemical and ecological mechanisms. However, this concept has been criticized as the true effects of riparian vegetation must be assessed by comprehensive models that mimic real environmental settings. This study aimed to estimate a comprehensive structural equation model integrating topography, land use, and characteristics of riparian vegetation. We used water quality data from the Nakdong River system monitored under the National Aquatic Ecosystem Monitoring Program (NAEMP) of the Korean Ministry of Environment (MOE). Also, riparian vegetation data and land use data were extracted from the Land Use/Land Cover map (LULC) produced by the MOE. The number of structural equation models (SEMs) were estimated in Amos of IBM SPSS. Study results revealed that land use was determined by elevation, and developed areas within a watershed significantly increased the concentration of Total Nitrogen (TN) in streams and LDI in riparian vegetation. On the contrary, developed areas significantly reduced LPI and PLAND. At the same time, PLAND and LDI significantly reduced the concentration of TN in streams. Thus, it was clear that developed areas in watersheds had both a direct and an indirect impact on the concentration of TN in streams, and spatial pattern and the amount of vegetation of riparian vegetation could significantly alleviate the negative impacts of developed areas on TN concentration in streams. To enhance stream water quality, reducing developed areas in a watershed is critical for long-term watershed management plans, restoration patterns for riparian vegetation could be immediately implemented since riparian areas were less developed than most other watersheds.

Designing and Applicability of Soil Pollution Indices for Estimating Quality of Soil Polluted with Heavy Metals and Arsenic (중금속 및 비소오염 토양질 평가를 위한 토양오염지표의 고안과 응용 가능성)

  • Soil pollution indices (SPI) were designed for estimating quality of soil polluted with arsenic and heavy metals. Applying the quality reference value of soil based on its multifunctional purpose was a key step. For considereing multifunctions of soil, soil was classified into 4 groups-agricultural land, residential area, recreational area, factorial site. Then, each concentration of arsenic and each of five heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb, Zn) in soils grouped was transformed to a mathematical value based on the soil quality reference value which may stand for ecological impact. Soil pollution score (SPS) was the addition of the 6 values transformed, and the range of the SPS was divided into 4 Soil Pollution Classes (SPC). The SPC 1, 2, 3, and 4 were SPS <100, SPS 100-200, SPS >200-300, and SPS >300, repectively. SPS and SPC were evaluated with the results of the data from employing the Soil Network of 1994. Based on the soil quality reference values, SPS and SPC of the Soil Network's data were transformed and classified, respectively. Then, SPS and SPC were compared with arsenic and the 5 heavy metal contents of their reference values resulted from the Soil Network's. From this method, soil quality of most of the Soil Network area was estimated to be healthy. However, ca. 3.0~4.0% of the Soil Network area was determined in a range of slightly and heavily polluted. As the mean value of SPS of the Soil Network's was 66.2 which indicates most of soil evaluated was healthy. When the SPSs of the data were divided into 4 groups of SPC, Class 1 (Good quality of soil), Class 2 (Need to be checked area 1), Class 3 (Need to be checked area 2) and Class 4 (Polluted area) were 87.0, 9.4, 2.4, 1.2%, respectively. Using SPI were comparable to those of heavy metal contents in soils, and would be comprehenve to determine the status of soil qulity. Methodology of the developing SPI would be applicable to the other soil pollutants such as organic and inorganics than arsenic and 5 heavy metals used here.

A Phenology Modelling Using MODIS Time Series Data in South Korea (MODIS 시계열 자료(2001~2011) 및 Timesat 알고리즘에 기초한 남한 지역 식물계절 분석)

  • This study aimed to analyze spatio-temporal trends of phenological characteristics in South Korea by using MODIS EVI. For the phenology analysis, we had applied double logistic function to MODIS time-series data. Our results showed that starting date of phenology seems to have a tendency along with latitudinal trends. Starting date of phenology of Jeju Island and Mt. Sobeak went back for 0.38, 0.174 days per year, respectively whereas, Mt. Jiri and Mt. Seolak went forward for 0.32 days, 0.239 days and 0.119 days, respectively. Our results exhibited the fluctuation of plant phonological season rather than the change of phonological timing and season. Starting date of plant phenology by spatial distribution revealed tendency that starting date of mountain area was late, and basin and south foot of mountain was fast. In urban ares such as Seoul metropolitan, Masan, Changwon, Milyang, Daegu and Jeju, the phonological starting date went forward quickly. Pheonoligcal attributes such as starting date and leaf fall in urban areas likely being affected from heat island effect and related warming. Our study expressed that local and regional monitoring on phonological events and changes in Korea would be possible through MODIS data.
