We assessed fish fauna and habitat suitability indexes in the Geum river basin. Field monitoring was conducted for ecological and habitat condition assessment at 23 sites from October 2007 to March 2009. The habitat suitability indexes established for dominant fish species using the monitoring data were employed to assess riverine health conditions such as composition ratio of fish species, richness and dominance indexes, bio-diversity(dominance index, diversity, evenness and richness), and water depth, velocity and substrate size. Twenty-one species(42%) including Rhodeus uyekii and Pseudopungtungia nigra were found endemic out of the 50 species in 11 families sampled during this study period. The most frequently found one was Zacco platypus(34.3%) followed by Z. koreanus(10.2%) and Coreoleuciscus splendidus(8.4%). For Z. platypus, the dominant fish species in the basin, the favored habitat conditions were estimated to be 0.1~0.9 m for water depth, 0~0.9m/s for flow velocity and silt(<0.1mm)~cobbles(100.0~300.0mm) for substrate size, respectively. Overall, it was concluded that the Geum river basin has been relatively well protected from the anthropogenic disturbance for the legally protected species including the endemic species studied in this study.
Laboratory studies have revealed that naturally transformable bacteria develop competence under in situ conditions. Thus, the occurrence of competent bacteria in the environment can be considered as a certainty The persistence of free DNA in natural habitats is influenced by nucleolytic degradation and protection from degradation by adsorption to minerals. Although DNA seeded into natural environment was hydrolysed at substantial rates, but was still detectable at low levels after even several weeks. Compared to the number of laboratory based studies, only a few data have been published dealing with transformation of bacteria in the field. Recently, the potential transfer of recombinant DNA (rDNA) from deliberately or accidentally released bacteria to indigenous microbes has raised biosafety issues, since the persistence of rDNA becomes independent of the survival of its original host and leads to unpredictable, long-term ecological effects. The aim of the present review is to summarise recent literature on horizontal gene transfer (HGT) by transformation among bacteria in both soil and aquatic habitat and special emphasis is placed on recent reports which have addressed HGT among bacteria in the field. Dietary therapy is a basic and emphasized treatment for diabetes. Several clinical studies have shown that diet can play a major role in preventing and managing diabetes. The purposes of this study were to evaluate the dietary behavior and to find solutions to barriers of diabetes mellitus patients. From February to July in 2007, questionnaires were distributed to one hundred and ten patients who were diagnosed DM by physicians and excluded first coming out-patients. One hundred and three data were used for statistical analysis using SPSS/Win 12.0. The main results of this study included the following: To measure dietary behaviors and barriers, a five point scale was used with the following labels: 'strongly yes', 'yes', 'fair', 'no', 'strongly no'. Thirteen dietary behaviors related to diabetes were grouped into the following 4 factors using factor analysis; 'taste control factor', 'blood glucose influence factor', 'practice volition factor', and 'exercise factor'. The mean scores of 4 factors were 3.88, 3.48, 3.55, 3.21, respectively. The 'taste control behaviors' score of subjects who had practiced diet therapy(4.00) was higher than those who had not practiced diet therapy(P<0.05). The 'blood glucose influence behaviors' score of subjects who had nutrition education(3.59) was higher than those who had no nutrition education(P<0.05) and subjects who had practiced diet therapy showed higher score(3.59) than those who had not practiced diet therapy(P<0.05). 'Exercise behaviors score' of subjects who were over 60(3.59) was the lowest(P<0.05). Subjects who had nutrition education showed higher 'exercise behaviors' scores(3.38) than those who had no nutrition education(P<0.05). Subjects who had practiced diet therapy showed higher 'practice volition behaviors' scores(3.72) than those who had not practiced diet therapy(P<0.001). Subjects who were over weight showed the highest 'practice volition behaviors' scores(3.78) concerning BMI(P<0.05). In conclusion, this study expected that Nutrition educators(Dietitian) applied to patient effective nutrition education and counseling through evaluation of Dietary behaviors and barriers considered management types and ecological factors of diabetes patients. Also diabetic patients were easy to change dietary habits because they formed behaviors through education and counsel and there were positive effects in their blood glucose control through removing barriers related to dietary therapy.

In order to establish fundamental data for stream restoration and environmental flow, we investigated fish fauna, community and physical habitat conditions in the Dal Stream of Han River Basin. Field monitoring including fish sampling was conducted from September 2008 to October 2009. A total number of fish caught in the 5 sites was 2,080 representing 9 families 35 species, and 19 species (54.3%) including Acheilognathus koreensis and Iksookimia koreensis were Korean endemic species during the study period. The most frequently found species in number was pale chub (Zacco platypus, 25.7%, n = 632) followed by Coreoleuciscus splendidus (18.0%, n = 375) and Z. koreanus (13.0%, n = 272). The lower reach of Dal Stream was more abundance of species, high diversity, evenness and richness, and lower dominance index than those of the upper reach. According to the dendrogram established at 0.63 level of similarity rate, sampling stations were divided into 2 groups. Most of upper streams in Korea consist of riffles and runs that are repeatedly followed by another one. However, stream channelization and leveling have caused reduction of habitat diversity. Therefore, it is necessary to make an effort on stream rehabilitation with evaluation of physical habitat condition by indicator species in order to maintain biodiversity and perform ecological restoration.
This study was carried out to define the characteristics of the identified ground-dwelling invertebrate communities at Nari basin and Tonggumi area in Ulleungdo Island, designated as a nationally important agricultural heritage. The habitat types were divided into the following categories: crop land, forest, and ecotone, and the soil-dwelling invertebrates were collected according to habitat type. The ground-dwelling invertebrates were collected using a pitfall trap, and a self-organizing map (SOM) was applied to the invertebrates dataset to define the characteristics in invertebrates distribution. The SOM clearly classified the relevant information into four clusters, and extracted ecological information from the invertebrates dataset. The cluster II was composed of invertebrate communities which are collected in the Tonggumi area. The Tonggumi area is where mountainous areas were developed for agricultural purposes, which has geographical features commonly observed in Ulleungdo Island. It is noted that the cluster II has different characteristics as compared other clusters. The results of this study are expected to be used for the preservation of agricultural environment and maintenance of biodiversity by providing basic data, on the biotope of Ulleungdo Island designated as a nationally important agricultural heritage and information on the characteristics of the applicable ground-dwelling invertebrate communities.

This study is aimed at using the grasped problems of protected areas in Korea as the basic data for management planning and system improvement of protected areas by grasping realistic problems through the interview with the persons in charge on the basis of general problems of domestic protected areas. To this end, this study deducted major problems in urgent need of improvement, and improvement direction through the survey of the persons in charge of protected areas. This study result is as follows: The major problems, which should be preferentially improved, were found to be shortages of management infrastructure, cooperation between interested parties, and threat factors in protected areas, etc. Such problems are interconnected with each other, thus coming up complexly; therefore, it's necessary to make a comprehensive approach to the problems after confirming the causal relationship of the identified problems. In addition, for the purpose of effective management of a protected area, it's necessary to implement priority management of major problems through different management intensity from the planning phase. Also, it's important to enhance the effectiveness of planning by considering a possible potential threat factor in the outside of protected areas, and referring to the contents of the development plan for the relevant area in time of management planning. Lastly, there is the need for systematic improvement of an institution through thorough status review of the actual state of management planning fulfillment in order to increase the effectiveness of planning in a follow-up study hereafter.

A water quality modeling study was performed for Chunggye stream during combined sewer overflow(CSO) period, utilizing the diagnostic system for water management in small watershed, CREEK-1(Cyber River for Environment and Economy in Korea). This system integrated geogaphic information system, data base, landscape ecological model(FRAGSTATS), watershed model(SWMM), water quality model (WASP5), and computer graphic. In this study, the watershed model and water quality model were extensively utilized so as to simulate water qualities and flow in Chunggye stream during wet periods. The Chunggye stream watershed was divided into 18 sub-basins in the watershed model and the stream reach into 11 segments in the water quality model. The watershed model was validated against field measurements of BOD, TN, TP, and flow at the downstream location, where the model results showed a reasonable agreement with the field measurements at all parameters. From this study, it was shown that the stream water quality would change along with elapsed time from rainfall start as well as rainfall intensity. The model results indicated that the water quality would significantly upgrade due to the first flush and high sewage ratio of CSO at the beginning of rainfall event, but become degraded along with the runoff increase due to dilution effect.
The relationship between diet diversity and nutrient intake was studied. Diet diversity, caloric intake and dietary nutrient density values were examined as contributors to the level of selected nutrients with the use of data obtained from 14-day dietary records of 60 college women. The subjects were grouped into quartiles on the basis of level of intake of each of the specific nutrients. The indexes of diet diversity were the number of different food items and Shannon & Weaver's diversity index. Differences in diet diversity were found among nutrients and indexes. In general, calorie and protein intake were more diverse, on the other hand, intake of vitamins A and C were less diverse. With the exception of calcium, iron, vitamin $B_1$, niacin and vitamin C, the number of food items increased at each quartile of intake of specific nutrients. It was concluded that for some nutrients(as with fat), the number of food items consumed may be useful in estimating nutrient intakes. For other nutrients(as with calcium), utilization of nutrient-specific diversity indexes is necessary. Increased nutrient intake was accompanied by increased caloric intake(except vitamins A and C) and dietary nutrient density for all nutrients.

In this study, numerical experiments were conducted to identify distribution of rising flow and flux in the East Sea of Korea, where the coastal upwelling occurs. Temperature and salinity data from CTD observations and NIFS during summer 2013 were applied to the model. Numerical experiments were carried out with different wind speed (3, 6 m/s and 9 m/s) and direction (southerly and southwesterly), which represent the most frequent in summer conditions. As a result of calculation, upwelling flow rate was found to be highest in Pohang between five coasts(Hupo, Youngduk, Pohang, Ulsan and Busan). Comparing with southerly wind conditions, the rising flow rate is about 1.5 times greater when southwesterly wind was applied. Horizontal diffusion of the upwelling area is expected to have a speed of 17~22 km/day when a 9 m/s southwesterly wind is applied. If this wind continues over one week, a cold pool will be generated by upwelling that may reach to the Ulleung area.

The Hebei Spirit oil spill incident occurred in December 7, 2007 and caused approximately $12,547k{\ell}$ of crude oil spillage along 370km off the west coast of Korea. Due to the astronomical and irrecoverable damage to the marine ecosystems and the overall living standards of the residents, the oil spill incident has been notoriously named as the "worst oil spill incident" occurred in Korea. Nevertheless, though almost a decade has passed since the tragic incident in Korea, it appears that compensation and recovery efforts seem not close to satisfaction and the local residents are still struggling with various negative impacts incurred by the incident because of critical cleavage among the interests of the relevant parties to the incident. In this paper, the analysis of Hebei Spirit oil spill incident regarding two aspects was carried out; First, meticulously analyze the practical and statistical data of the incident to precisely examine the fundamental causes for its occurrence to further prevent the reoccurrence of such disastrous incident; and the second, comprehensively inspect reasons for the protracted and inefficient damage recovery and victim-oriented compensation. To be specific, this study observed the levels of compensation against damages from the incident, and the adequacy of it in terms of ultimately and inclusively addressing financial, social and ecological aspects based primarily upon the legal verdicts, and statistical and empirical surveys.
