In order to perform this study, two classes of 6th graders of M elementary school in Gwangju were selected and divided into two groups; one groups was the experimental group that undergoes ecological experience program at the Gwangju River, and another group was the control group that studied about environment in the classroom. The results of this study were as following. First of all, the experimental group has more influence on the environmental sensitivity than the control group. Secondly, the ecological experience program at the urban stream can be the effective method to build the environmental sensitivity of elementary school students. In conclusion, the results are showing that the ecological experience program at the urban stream helps elementary school students to change their environmental sensitivity in positive ways, also it gives idea that how to protect the environment and what they actually can do.
Monitoring techniques for afro-ecological environments were studied, Hydrologic and ecological components in conjunction with water quality were monitored in the Balkan watershed. The hydrologic monitoring program consists of four water level gauging stations along creeks and stream at the watershed having 26.5 km2. Stage - storage relationship of reservoir, rainfall amount of the watershed, and rating curve of the stream gauging stations were established. Soil type, land use, hydrologic soil group, population and economic activities within the watershed were surveyed. Water quality data from the streams were sampled weekly and chemical analysis was conducted. Temporal variations of water quality were investigated and water quality map of each reach of stream was made to identify spatial variations. Seasonal and spatial variations of vegetation densities along stream in the watershed were investigated using grid, Density variations of insect species such as arthropod, flying insect, spider spices, rice insects were also monitored to determine seansonal surveying density. These monitored data will be used to develop monitoring techi%ues and afro - ecological environment models.
The ecosystem of Jaemin stream, flowing into the center of Gongju-si, had been damaged by low water quality and lack of water quantity of the steam. However, after applying the SSB (Sustainable Structured wetland Biotop) system to the flood plain and the upstream of Jaemin stream, the efficiency of ecological water purification and ecological restoration are as follows. Through the constant maintenance and monitoring from year 2009 to year 2013 after restorative design and construction the average influent concentration of BOD5 was 4.2 mg/L, and the average effluent concentration was 1.8 mg/L, reaching ecological water purification rate of 57%. As for the T-N, the average influent concentration was 9.983 mg/L, and the average effluent concentration was 6.303 mg/L, showing the rate of 37%. For the T-P, the average influent concentration was 0.198 mg/L, and the average effluent concentration was 0.098 mg/L, being the rate of 51%. The vegetation of Jaemin stream monitored for 2 years after the restoration was composed of 51 species in 28 families which show high ratio of planted native species. As for the animals in the site, 5 species in 3 families of reptiles and amphibians, 34 species of 23 families of birds, and 3 species in 2 families of mammals were monitored, indicating that the bio-diversity of the site has improved, as well.
The essence of a natural stream restoration project is providing habitats for various creatures in terms of the stream's environmental function. This research suggests the problems of natural stream restoration project by studying streams in terms of habitats for creatures and reviewing the national and international cases on existing natural stream restoration project. As a solution for the above, this research suggests a preservation method for biotope of upper stream areas focusing on the fish biotope area considering the ecological characteristics and preservation value of the respective stream so that the stream can be preserved as habitats for creatures. The research was carried out on Cheonglimli Baekcheon region which is an upper stream area of Buan-Dam located in the public park in Byunsanbando, Buangoon, Jeonlabookdo. We suggest the preservation method based on the habitat environment and keystone species of fish. The habitat environment evaluation was carried out mainly being divided into three groups namely, habitats and surrounding environment, reservoir's features and fish way and the diversity of fish. By improving the problematic elements discovered through such evaluation, it tries to improve the biotope of the stream and continuously preserve the stream. In addition, in order to restore the stream as habitats for various creatures, this research suggests to select keystone species which are suitable for the stream environment and restore the habitats based on the keystone species rather than restoring habitats for all species. Fish not only plays the role of a consumer of Epilithic algae and water beetles but also plays an important ecological role as a food for birds or small mammalia. If such ecologically important biotope for fish is preserved, the ecological environment of the stream will be maintained more stably.
Yangjae stream was divided with Seoul and Gwacheon reach. Seoul reach was ecologically restored; however, Gwacheon reach was not. Similarity index of the bird communities between the two areas was relatively high, 79.9%. The dominant species in Seoul reach were Passer montanus, Pica pica, Paradoxornis webbianus and Anas crecca. The dominant species in Gwacheon reach were Passer montanus, Pica pica, Paradoxornis webbianus and Streptopelia orientalis. The different species was Anas crecca in Seoul and Streptopelia orientalis in Gwacheon. An eco-park was constructed along the stream of Seoul reach since 1996 but was not in Gwacheon reach; the number of species has increased in Seoul area($r^2$=0.846, p<0.01), but Gwacheon was not change($r^2$=0.023, p>0.05) since 1996. The number of individuals, however, was almost constant in both reaches(Seoul : $r^2$=0.211, p>0.05, Gwacheon : $r^2$=0.032, p>0.05). In Seoul reach, the ecological restoration of stream was helpful to increase bird diversity. The number of waterbirds such as herons, plovers, sandpipers and wagtails was higher in Gwacheon reach than in Seoul reach, but the number of ducks and songbirds was higher in Seoul reach than in Gwacheon reach. We suggest that the ecological restoration in Seoul area might have negative effects on sandpipers, plovers and wagtails inhabiting on the flood plain in stream, but positive effects on other species such as herons, ducks and songbirds. Especially, the increasing number of ducks was attributed to an artificial pond in flood plain. The difference in the number of Streptopelia orientalis between both reaches was owing to the habitat differences such as forest trees playing a role as patch in high revetment. From the present investigation, it could be concluded that the ecological restoration of the local stream must be carried out with consideration of water channels, sand banks and water front in addition to the high revetment for birds to attract diverse bird communities.
The objective of this study was to estimate an optimum ecological flow rate in the Banbyeon stream based on the two representative fish species. Hydraulic stream environment was simulated with HEC-RAS for two water flow regimes and used for the PHABSIM hydraulic simulation. A dominant species of Zacco platypus and an endemic species of Squalidus chankaensis tsuchigae were selected as the representative fishes whose habitat conditions were evaluated for the spawning and adult stages. Weighted usable area (WUA) was estimated based on habitat suitability index (HSI) and PHABSIM habitat simulation. Overall deep water zone in the stream demonstrated greater WUA which implies better habitat status. The estimated WUA for Zacco platypus as the dominant species was about five times greater than Squalidus chankaensis tsuchigae at the stream flow of 12 ㎥/s. The optimum ecological flow rates were 15 ㎥/s and 25 ㎥/s for the respective spawning and adult stages of Zacco platypus, while 5 ㎥/s was estimated for both the life cycles of Squalidus chankaensis tsuchigae. Assuming that the dominant species may survive better in wider flow regimes, the optimum ecological flow rate should be determined rater based on the endemic species and flow rate of 5 ㎥/s was suggested for the Banbyeon stream.
It is important to consider interaction between species in understanding structure and function of the biological community. Current ecological issues such as climate change and habitat loss emphasize the significance of the concept of species interaction in that varying species' interaction across environmental gradients may lead to altered ecological function and services. However, most community studies have focused on species diversity through analysis of quantitative indices based on species composition and abundance data without considering species interactions in the community. 'Ecological network analysis' based on network theory enables exploration of structural and functional properties of ecosystems composed of various species and their interactions. In this paper, network analysis of Cheonggye stream as a case study was presented to promote uses of network analysis on ecological studies in Korea. Cheonggye stream has a simple biological structure with link density of 1.48, connectance 0.07, generality 4.43, and vulnerability 1.94. The ecological network analysis can be used to provide ecological interpretations of domestic long-term monitoring data and can contribute to conserving and managing species diversity in ecosystems.
