  • The study was carried out to provide information about growth and ecological characteristics by site types of natural deciduous forest in Pyeongchang, Gangwon Province. The data were collected from four aspects(the East, the West, the South, and the North) with three elevation(higher than 1.000 m, 700~1,000 m, lower than 700 m) and three topographical conditions(ridge, hill, and valley). Growth parameters by site types were evaluated based on the growth performances of dbh for the last 5 to 10 years; which were also estimated based on both Pressler and Schneider formulae. In addition, ecological characteristics such as Shannon-Wiener's diversity index, evenness index and richness index were analyzed by site types. The management methods by site types were suggested by considering stand density, growth patterns, and ecological characteristics. It was found that the stands on the South and the East are necessary the tending practices to improve growth and ecological characteristics. On the other hand, the West and the North needed the tending practices focusing on stand density management to increase growth rate rather than ecological management. It was also found that the area lower than 700 m in elevation showed Higher growth rate than other areas. As a management standard considered in terms of growth rate, it was suggested that tending practices should be applied to the stands of which growth rate for the last 5 to 10 years were lower than 2%. Considering topographical conditions, valley area showed better ecological characteristics than both ridge and hilly areas. Consequently, it was revealed that the valley areas were suitable for the ecological management.

  • We investigated the ecological characteristics and proximate composition of Muraenesox cinereus off the southern coast of Korea. Anal length distribution, sex ratio, condition factor of M. cinereus individuals caught by costal complex (longline) fisheries were investigated from June to October 2018. The mean anal length was 23.5 cm, which was less than $L_{50}$, indicating that the individuals were mostly immature. Sex ratio is 9:1, we captured 382 females and 29 males, which produced a significantly different ratio (P<0.05). Condition factor remained constant over the study period. The proximate composition of M. cinereus individuals was analyzed from July to October 2018. No significant differences in moisture, crude lipid, crude protein, and ash content were observed between individuals caught in summer and those caught in fall.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the mechanism involved in predicting the Quality of Life (QOL) of middle.aged Koreans. The QOL was measured by integrating life satisfaction indicators. To accomplish this, a survey data set was drawn from a convenient sample of 670 individuals during the period of January and February 2011. To differentiate the influences from the different life domains, stepwise multiple regressions were attempted. In our results, the SES indicators, personal mental health, physical health, social capital resources from family as well as job places, perceived local government services, and the current living conditions to determine QOL, explained 55% of the total variance. In conclusion, the results of this study demonstrated the complex mechanisms that explain QOL in terms of ecological predictors.

  • This paper gropes how to connect philosophy of household management(PHM) to real life. PHM is to think and to act for better quality of life, so PHM should contain not only theory but also practice in itself. In that sense, PHM is consist of two parts: one is viewpoints how to deal with home management and the other is practice. This paper presents 5 main viewpoints of PHM. Then, it explains PHM can connect with education of human nature, and ecological value in PHM can connect with practice of life. Also, it proposes a guide for practice.

  • South Africa has developed a policy and law that calls and provides for the equitable and sustainable use of water resources. Sustainable resource use is dependent on effective resource protection. Rivers are the most important freshwater resources in the country, and there is a focus on developing and applying methods to quantify what rivers need in terms of flow and water quality. These quantified and descriptive objectives are then related to specified levels of ecological health in a classification system. This paper provides an overview of an integrated and systematic methodology, where, fer each river, and each river reach, the natural condition and the present ecological condition are described, and a level/class of ecosystem health is selected. The class will define long term management goals. This procedure requires each ecosystem component to be quantified, starting with the abiotic template. A modified flow regime is modelled for each ecosystem health class, and the resultant fluvial geomorphology and hydraulic habitats are described. Then the water chemistry is described, and the water quality changes that are likely to occur as a consequence of altered flows are predicted. Finally, the responses to the stress imposed on the biota (fish, invertebrates and vegetation) by modified flow and water quality are predicted. All of the predicted responses are translated into descriptive and/or quantitative management objectives. The paper concludes with the recognition of active method development, and the enormous challenge of applying the methods, implementing the law, and achieving river protection and sustainable resource-use.

  • The purpose of this study was to verify a Structural Equation Model that constructed the causations among the structural leisure constraints, interpersonal leisure constraints, intrapersonal leisure constraints, leisure motivation, leisure activity participation, leisure satisfaction and the quality of life from the ecological perspective. The respondents were 301 elderly people residing in 4 free institutionalized elderly homes in Seoul. The data were analyzed by confirmatory factor analysis and covariance structure analysis using USREL 8.0 ver. The major results are summarized as follows: 1) Statistically, a goodness of fit is good of structural equation model presented in the study. 2) The structural leisure constraints and the interpersonal leisure constraints are some types of leisure environment of the aged in public homes from the ecological perspective. Such constraints would inevitably lead to a direct effect on individual leisure life and leisure motivation. 3) The important valuable factor which affected the leisure satisfaction and the quality of life in the elderly was the leisure motivation.

  • This study was designed to examine the decision-making and family life satisfaction of the urban middle-aged housewives from the ecological perspective. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of ecological enviornment variables(ie, natural physical-biological environment·social-cultural environment·human-built environment) and their dicision-making on their family life satisfaction. Also, it is to provide some fundamental information that helps to elevate the family life satisfaction of the unban middle-aged housewives. The subjects of this study were 305 housewives living in Seoul and Inchon area, whose age was from 40 to 59. The significant results were as follows: 1) Their decision-making was affected by the following variables in the order of health condition, fate-control orientation, husband’s support, monthly family income and the perception of the adequacy of household income. 2) The ecological environment variables which had an influence on family life satisfaction were the perception of the adequacy of household income, husband’s support, fate-control orientation, health condition and educational level. 3) From the regression analysis, the model was found to be highly significant, accounting for 44% of the variance. Thus, husband’s support was the strongest predictor variable.

  • Researching and estimating the ecological characteristics of target fish species is crucial for fisheries resource management. The results of these estimates significantly influence stock assessments and management reference points such as size limit and closed seasons. Recently, ecological characteristics have been changing due to overfishing, climate change, and marine pollution, making continuous estimation and monitoring essential. This study analyzed the ecological changes in small yellow croaker (Larimichthys polyactis) resources in Korea over 24 years (2000-2023) using biological data (growth and gonad traits). By estimating the annual length-weight relationship and length at maturity (L50 and L95), we interpreted the numerical trends of early maturation due to resource depletion. The parameter b of the length-weight relationship, indicating the nutritional status of the resources, showed a slight increase over the years, suggesting relatively good nutritional status (b > 3.0) during most periods. Trend analysis between length at maturity and biomass indicated that as biomass decreased, maturity length also decreased.
