Classification of rural villages based on Landscape Indices - Focusing on Landscape Ecological Aspects - (경관지수를 활용한 농촌마을 유형분류: 경관생태학적 접근)

  • This study aims to analyse the landscape ecological characteristics of 39 rural villages in Korea and classify them according to their characteristics. After producing a land-use map of rural villages, this study quantified the landscape ecological characteristics of the subject sites as 18 landscape indexes using Fragstats. By applying the landscape index as a variable, selecting 4 factor through principal component analysis and conducting a cluster analysis, it classified them into 3 groups. Rural villages of Korea have their unique types of land-use due to the influence of physical environment such as geography, climate and ecology as well as the social and cultural influence, and the characteristics of land-use can be analysed and classified using the landscape index, the quantified landscape ecological characteristics.

  • Arthrinium (Ascomycota, Apiosporaceae) is a major marine fungal genus. Three Arthrinium species were reported previously, but not fully described. We isolated the two species A. arundinis and A. saccharicola from Sargassum sp. brown algae in Jeju Island, Korea. These species have not been previously reported in Korea. We described these species in detail and performed a phylogenetic analysis based on the nucleotide sequences of the EF1-${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$-tubulin genes.

Estimation of Transport and the Mass Balance of a Molecular Marker (DSBP) in Tokyo Bay Using an Ecological Model (생태계 모델을 이용한 동경만 Molecular Marker(DSBP)의 거동 에측 및 물질수지 선정)

  • A three-dimensional ecological model (EMT-3D) was applied to Tokyo Bay to simulate 4,4'-bis (2-sulfostyryl)biphenyl (DSBP). The simulated results were in good agreement with the observed values, with a correlation coefficient of R=0.8431 and a coefficient of determination of $R^2$=0.7108. The sensitivity analysis indicated that the photolysis rate is the most important factor. Therefore, the parameters must be considered carefully in modeling. The mass balance results showed that the standing stock of DSBP in water and in particulate organic carbon was 621.2 and 19.5 kg, respectively, and the effluent flux to the open sea was 2.63 and 0.055 kg/day, respectively.

Effects of the Socio-Ecological Factors for Attempts to Quit-Smoking in Out-of-School Youths (학교 밖 청소년의 금연시도에 영향을 미치는 사회생태학적 요인)

  • Purpose: The study was undertaken to determine the socio-ecological convergence factors affecting on attempts to quit smoking in out-of-school youths. Methods: The study participants were 187 out-of-school youths enrolled Youth support Centers, collected from November 2018 to February 2019, analyzed through x2test and independent sample t-test, logistic regression analysis. Results: There was a significant differences and associated within daily smoking amounts, age of start smoking, intense physical activity, intake breakfast, smoking cessation self-efficiency, and smoking attitude among socio-ecological characteristics according to attempts of quit-smoking. Conclusion: The results of this study will be provided a basic data for developing The Quit-Smoking Intervention Program for out-of-school youth's health activities.

Photochemical Response Analysis on Drought Stress for Red Pepper (Capsiumannuum L.)

  • The aim of this study is to determine the drought stress index through photochemical analysis in red pepper (Capsiumannuum L.). The photochemical interpretation was performed in the basis of the relation between Kautsky effect and Photosystem II (PSII) following the measurement of chlorophyll, pheophytin contents, and $CO_2$ assimilation in drought stressed 5-week-old red pepper plants. The $CO_2$ assimilation rate was severely lowered with almost 77% reduction of chlorophyll and pheophytin contents at four days after non-irrigation. It was clearly observed that the chlorophyll fluorescence intensity rose from a minimum level (the O level), in less than one second, to a maximum level (the P-level) via two intermediate steps labeled J and I (OJIP process). Drought factor index (DFI) was also calculated using measured OJIP parameters. The DFI was -0.22, meaning not only the initial inhibition of PSII but also sequential inhibition of PSI. In real, most of all photochemical parameters such as quantum yield of the electron transport flux from Quinone A ($Q_A$) to Quinone B ($Q_B$), quantum yield of the electron transport flux until the PSI electron acceptors, quantum yield of the electron transport flux until the PSI electron acceptors, average absorbed photon flux per PSII reaction center, and electron transport flux until PSI acceptors per cross section were profoundly reduced except number of QA reducing reaction centers (RCs) per PSII antenna chlorophyll (RC/ABS). It was illuminated that at least 6 parameters related with quantum yield/efficiency and specific energy fluxes (per active PSII RC) could be applied to be used as the drought stress index. Furthermore, in the combination of parameters, driving forces (DF) for photochemical activity could be deduced from the performance index (PI) for energy conservation from photons absorbed by PSII antenna until the reduction of PSI acceptors. In conclusion, photochemical responses and their related parameters can be used as physiological DFI.

Factors Associated with Gastric Cancer Screening of Koreans Based on a Socio-ecological Model (사회생태학적 모형에 기반한 한국인 위암검진 수검의 관련 요인)

  • Objectives : We measured behavioral factors associated with Koreans receiving gastric cancer screening based on a socio-ecological model, in part to develop strategies to improve cancer screening rates. Methods : A telephone survey was conducted with 2,576 people chosen through stratified random sampling from April 1 - May 31, 2004. Collected information included gastric cancer screening, socio-demographic factors, and socio-ecological factors at intrapersonal, interpersonal, community, and public policy levels. Results : Among 985 survey respondents(380 men and 605 women), 402 had received gastric cancer screening. Logistic analysis was performed to compare those screened and unscreened. 'Age' was the only demographic factor that showed a statistically significant association with getting screening. People in their fifties (OR=1.731, 95% CI=1.190-2.520) and sixties (OR=2.098, 95% CI=1.301-3.385) showed a higher likelihood of getting screened, compared to those in the forties. 'Accessibility to a medical institution' was a significant factor related to having gastric cancer screening at the intrapersonal level. At the interpersonal level, recommendations by family members to be screened and a family practice of routine cancer screening were significantly related. People with frequent education about cancer screening or with stronger social feelings that cancer screening is necessary also demonstrated significantly higher tendencies to be screened. Conclusions : In conclusion, a socio-ecological model seems appropriate for explaining gastric cancer screening behavior and associated factors. Health planners should develop integrated strategies to improve cancer screening rates based on socio-ecological factors, especially at the interpersonal and community levels.

Variation of Ecological Niche of Quercus serrata under Elevated $CO_2$ Concentration and Temperature ($CO_2$ 농도 및 온도 상승에 의한 졸참나무의 생태적 지위 변화)

  • In order to investigate effects of elevated $CO_2$ concentration and temperature on the ecological niche of Quercus serrata in Korea. We divided experimental condition in the greenhouse that are control (ambient condition) and treatment with elevated $CO_2$ (approximately 1.6 above than control) and increased air temperature (approximately $2.2^{\circ}C$ above than control). We measured twenty kind characters of seedlings and calculated the ecological niche breadth. As a result, the ecological niche breadth, treatment was widened in the light gradient than the control, was narrowed in the moisture and nutrient gradient. This is may be predicted when the global warming progress, Q. serrata is increases resistance to light environment, and decrease resistance to moisture and nutrient environment. According to the principal component analysis (PCA), control and treatment were arranged based on factor 1 and 2 in each environment gradients. Ecological response is involved variety characters. Among them, indicating that Characters of production is involved in many a parts.

Ecological Characteristics and Proximate Composition of Muraenesox cinereus off the Southern Coast of Korea (한국 남해 연안 갯장어(Muraenesox cinereus)의 생태학적 특성 및 식품 성분 비교)

  • We investigated the ecological characteristics and proximate composition of Muraenesox cinereus off the southern coast of Korea. Anal length distribution, sex ratio, condition factor of M. cinereus individuals caught by costal complex (longline) fisheries were investigated from June to October 2018. The mean anal length was 23.5 cm, which was less than $L_{50}$, indicating that the individuals were mostly immature. Sex ratio is 9:1, we captured 382 females and 29 males, which produced a significantly different ratio (P<0.05). Condition factor remained constant over the study period. The proximate composition of M. cinereus individuals was analyzed from July to October 2018. No significant differences in moisture, crude lipid, crude protein, and ash content were observed between individuals caught in summer and those caught in fall.

Effects of Global Warming and Environmental Factors of Light, Soil Moisture, and Nutrient Level on Ecological Niche of Quercus acutissima and Quercus variabilis (지구온난화와 환경요소인 광, 토양수분, 영양소가 상수리나무와 굴참나무의 생태 지위에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to determine the changes of the ecological niche breadth and niche overlap of Quercus acutissima and Quercus variabilis under elevated $CO_2$ concentrations and under elevated temperature conditions. We investigated the growth responses by environmental factor, $CO_2$ concentration, air temperature, light, soil moisture and nutrients. Rising $CO_2$ concentration was treated with 1.6 times than control (ambient) and increased temperature with $2.2^{\circ}C$ above the control (ambient) in the glass greenhouse. Ecological niche breadth and niche overlap was calculated the two oak species (Q. acutissima and Q. variabilis), which were cultivated with light, soil moisture and nutrient gradients at four levels. As a result, the ecological niche breadth of Quercus acutissima was determined to be increased under the warming treatment, but decreased under soil moisture and nutrient environments. The ecological niche breadth of Quercus variabilis was increased under light, soil moisture and nutrients of the warming treatment than control. Ecological niche overlap between Quercus acutissima-Quercus variabilis was increased under light of the warming treatment than control, but decreased under soil moisture and nutrient environments. These results means that two oak species are more severe competition in light environments than soil moisture and nutrient environments. According to analyses of the Cluster and PCA, the two oak species were more sensitive react under light environment than to elevated $CO_2$ concentration or elevated temperature.

A Study on the Satisfaction Degree of Ecological Interpretation Program in Cheonggyechon (청계천 생태해설 프로그램 만족도 분석 연구)

  • The objectives of this study are to suggest the future development direction and improvement plan by analyzing the status of operation and satisfaction degree of cheonggyecheon ecological interpretation program. For the purpose, this study used the questionnaire about the satisfaction degree of program which were divided into two groups, adults and children and analyzed the result of program operation from 4th of April to 31 th of October in 2006. The result are as follows; 1. The total degree of satisfaction of adult is more higher than the children's. 2. The result of regression analysis shows the ecological interpretator variable turns out the most influential factor of satisfaction degree of program. 3. The most of visitor prefer the program which can experience diverse sense on the flora and fauna in cheonggyecheon. Therefore, it is needed to develop the program which can take children's fancy and experience diverse sense on the fauna and flora as well as improve the level of ecological interpretation.
