  • One of the conspicuous changes in kitchens is that kitchen space is more economically constructed than ever before giving more considerations to functionality. At the same time, eco-friendliness begins enjoying more attention for health and well-being reasons. Which is more important between functionality and eco-friendliness is a matter of personal taste and judgement. But eco-friendliness has become one of the more critical criteria for users to choose kitchen furniture. This paper examines the design trends of Contemporary kitchen furniture from the perspective of functionality and eco-friendliness. Results show that, as has been expected, many of kitchen furniture items manufactured by major furniture businesses have been found more functional and more eco-friendly than before the research period. I expect this trend to continue long into the future.

  • For the slope stability and revegetation of retaining wall, Eco-Stone was built beside a newly constructed road in August, 2002. Eco-Stone blocks were constructed in 4 different combinations of irrigation and soil types. Within the Eco-Stone, planted were 6 species such as Forsythia koreana, Rhododendron mucronulatum, Spiraea prunifolia var. simpliciflora, Rhododendron sp. Euonymus japonica, and Aster koraiensis. Shoot growth was greater on common soils than at a better soil treatment for Forsythia koreana(P<0.01) and Spiraea prunifolia var. simpliciflora(P<0.05), while there were no significant differences for the other species. Biomass increment of the planted species also did not show significant differences between irrigation types, except Rhododendron sp. and Aster koraiensis of which biomass was higher under irrigation than at no irrigation for common soils. Most of the planted individuals were alive, showing survival ratio of 90~97% with no significant differences among treatment blocks. These results imply that the Eco-Stone can be used economically for slope stability and revegetation instead of concrete blocks, without a specific soil and irrigation requirement.

  • Porous medium was considered in the present study for the heat transfer enhancement. This was attributed to its high surface area to volume ratio as well as intensive flow mixing by tortuous flow passages. But when the air or water flow through in the porous medium, it is occurred the pressure drop between inlet and outlet. So in the present study investigated simulation result about the pressure drop in the porous medium before apply to heat exchanger. In this simulation, the thickness of the solid inside the porous medium region was varied 0.2 mm to 0.4 mm. And then the simulation result were compared the pressure drop in the same unit cell ($0.5\;mm{\times}0.5\;mm{\times}0.5\;mm$). To make the analysis model, it was assumed the 14-sided tetrakaidecahedron cell which has long been considered the optimal packing cell first proposed by the Lord Kelvin in 1887. And then the simulation is carried out using by STAR-CCM+ which is commercial software. The simulation result can be showed quantified pressure drop by solid effect in the porous medium.

  • To enhancement heat transfer performance, the metallic foam as heat exchanger was studied rapidly. This was attributed to its high surface area to volume ratio as well as intensive flow mixing by tortuous flow passages. So the experimental study about the heat transfer characteristic of metallic foam is presented in this paper. The material in this experiment was used as FeCrAl which has density of 10 ppi, 20 ppi and 30 ppi respectively. And the results show the heat transfer is rise with permeability Reynolds number increase and the pressure drop metallic foam was increased with the ppi increase.

  • Ulsan made its contributions to modern Korea as an industrial city. In the 1960s, Ulsan was appointed as a special industrial zone. After that, industrial complexes were built without environmental considerations so Ulsan was once called "the polluted city". However, in the early 2000s, the main concern of Ulsan's policies was gradually shifted from the economic growth to the environmental issues. In order to enhance the environmental quality and to make the Ulsan more environmentally friendly eco-city where human and nature coexist, Ulsan city declared "The Eco-polis Ulsan" in 2004 based on "The Master Plan for Eco-polis Ulsan" which included the eco-industrial park as an action plan. This study aims at defining the concepts of eco-city and policies to build Ulsan-style eco-city as environmentally friendly city and proposing Ulsan as a role model to cities and towns of developing countries. In addition, Ulsan's EIP project which will be implemented for 15 years from 2005, is elaborated including regulatory issues and technologies to be applied.

  • The removal of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) in aqueous solution by coupled electro-oxidation and Fe(II) activated persulfate oxidation process was investigated. The electrochemical oxidation was performed using carbon sheet electrode and persulfate using Fe(II) ion as an activator. The oxidation efficiency was investigated by varying current density (2 - 10 mA/㎠), electrolyte (Na2SO4) concentration (10 - 100 mM), persulfate concentration (5 - 20 mM), and Fe(II) concentration (10 - 20 mM). The 2,4-D removal efficiency was in the order of Fe(II) activated persulfate-assisted electrochemical oxidation (Fe(II)/PS/ECO, 91%) > persulfate-electrochemical oxidation (PS/ECO, 51%) > electro-oxidation (EO, 36%). The persulfate can be activated by electron transfer in PS/ECO system, however, the addition of Fe(II) as an activator enhanced 2,4-D degradation in the Fe(II)/PS/ECO system. The 2,4-D removal efficiency was not affected by the initial pHs (3 - 9). The presence of anions (Cl- and HCO3-) inhibited the 2,4-D removal in Fe(II)/PS/ECO system due to scavenging of sulfate radical. Scavenger experiment using tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) and methanol (MeOH) confirmed that although both sulfate (SO4•-) and hydroxyl (•OH) radicals existed in Fe(II)/PS/ECO system, hydroxyl radical (SO4•-) was the predominant radical.
