  • Acoustic signal is emitted from a vessel and received by a cylindrical array sensor at some distance from the vessel. Acoustic signal is the source for a cylindrical array sensor which is designed to detect the acoustic signal. Cylindrical array sensors seldom have an ideal hydrodynamic shape and are not sufficiently robust to survive without some protection and they are normally housed in a sonar dome. Reflected signals by some structure inside a sonar dome make unwanted signals. Therefore, an acoustic baffle is used to minimize unwanted signals. The performance of the acoustic baffles can be determined from the acoustic numerical analysis at the design stage. In this study, finite element method was used to analyze the acoustic field around the cylindrical array sensor and baffle effects. The baffle performance can be defined the echo reduction. To show the baffle performance, the specimens were made for pulse tube test and echo reductions were measured during the test. In this paper, the effect of echo reduction of the acoustic baffle was discussed.

  • The feasibility of using low cost, unpowered, unshielded dynamic microphones is investigated for cost effective contactless sensing of impact-echo signals in concrete structures. Impact-echo tests on a delaminated concrete slab specimen were conducted and the results were used to assess the damage detection capability of the low cost system. Results showed that the dynamic microphone successfully captured impact-echo signals with a contactless manner and the delaminations in concrete structures were clearly detected as good as expensive high-end air pressure sensor based non-contact impact-echo testing.

  • Sounding data is the essential source for the safety of ships navigation system, and fundamental to the reasonable usage and maintenance of the ocean as well. As IT tech, positioning equipment such as GPS and INS, echo sounder are developed, recently, the precise submarine topography database bas been built by Multi-Beam Echo Sounder. However, MBES data includes some inevitable error caused by several factor, and some data have errors where the terrain is wobble. The error, which causes the $moir\acute{e}$ pattern error is the main factor hindering the accuracy of MBES data results, and therefore it is necessary to figure out the main cause of the error for the improvement of the accuracy by removing error data. On this research, the main cause of the error data is studied by analyzing motion sensor value of data including the $moir\acute{e}$ pattern error. Thus, as the result of examination, it turns out that the $moir\acute{e}$ pattern error is related to the standard deviation of Roll, and error data values are results of the non-correspondence between Swath data and Roll values caused by the drastic change of Roll values. Accordingly, the error data is removed by comparing between the gradient of Swath data and Roll values. Finally, as the result of removing error data, it is expected to be able to estimate the quality of MBES using the standard deviation of Motion sensor's Roll value, and calculate the additive error factor, which minimize non-corresponding data, and also this research must be contributed to improve the accuracy of sounding for small vessels with lots of motion in the bad circumstance for navigation.

  • This research develops an ultrasonic sensor to measure the distance in underwater. The ultrasonic transducer transmits an acoustic signal to an object and receives the echo signal reflected from the object. The ultrasonic driver calculates a distance by multiplying the acoustic speed to the time of flight(TOF) which is the time necessary for the acoustic signal to travel from the transducer to the object. We apply a thresholding and a cross correlation methods to detect the TOF and show their results. When an echo pulse is corrupted with noise and its shape is distorted, the cross correlation method is used to find the TOF based on the maximum similarity between the reference and the delayed echo signals. The echoes used for the reference signal are achieved at the different environments, which improves the performance of the sensor. This paper describes the driver of the acoustic sensor and analyzes the performance of sensors in different measurement environments.

  • This paper presents the method of AGV(Automatic guided vehicle)'s moving environment(plane, corner, edge) recognition using SONAR sensor configuration. As for the SONAR sensor, the Crosstalk effect has been generally considered as an inevitable noisy phenomenon in the indoor environment. However, this effect can be used as a clue for classifying and localizing targets in the indoor environment if those can be controlled and used well. EERUF(error eliminate rapid ultrasonic firing) is a method for firing multiple ultrasonic sensors in mobile robot application and multi-echo mode of POLARIOD Device can reduce the Crosstalk effect. Here, Crosstalk effect was reduced using EERUF and applied to the AGV with a simple wall-following algorithm in the indoor environment. This method was tesed by a typical AGV with multi SONAR sensors in the laboratory environment.

  • Material information for environment may be useful to accomplish mobile robot localization. A procedure to classify a set of indoor materials (glass, steel, wood, aluminum and concrete) with the reflected signal of ultrasonic sensor is proposed in this paper. The main idea is to use material-specific reflection characteristics for the recognition of material type. To achieve the classification task, we modeled reflected signal as a maximum amplitude with respect to distance. In this way, we can generate echo signal models for the given materials and these models are used to compare with the current sensor reading. The experimental results show that the proposed method may give material information during map building task of mobile robot.

  • Accurate estimates of in place thickness of early age (3 to 28 days after casting) concrete pavements are needed, where a thickness accuracy of ${\pm}6mm$ is desired. The impact-echo method is a standardized non-destructive technique that has been applied for this task. However, the ability of impact-echo to achieve this precision goal is affected by Vp (measured) and ${\beta}$ (assumed) values that are applied in the computation. A deeper understanding of the effects of these parameters on the accuracy of impact-echo should allow the technique to be improved to meet the desired accuracy goal. In this paper, the results of experimental tests carried out on a range of concrete slabs are reported. Impact-echo thickness estimation errors caused by material property gradients and sensor type are identified. Correction factors to the standard analysis method are proposed to correct the identified errors and to increase the accuracy of the standard method. Results show that improved accuracy can be obtained in the field by applying these recommendations with the standard impact-echo method.

  • Humans mainly recognize surrounding objects using visual and auditory information among the five senses (sight, hearing, smell, touch, taste). Major research related to the latest object recognition mainly focuses on analysis using image sensor information. In this paper, after emitting various chirp audio signals into the observation space, collecting echoes through a 2-channel receiving sensor, converting them into spectral images, an object recognition experiment in 3D space was conducted using an image learning algorithm based on deep learning. Through this experiment, the experiment was conducted in a situation where there is noise and echo generated in a general indoor environment, not in the ideal condition of an anechoic room, and the object recognition through echo was able to estimate the position of the object with 83% accuracy. In addition, it was possible to obtain visual information through sound through learning of 3D sound by mapping the inference result to the observation space and the 3D sound spatial signal and outputting it as sound. This means that the use of various echo information along with image information is required for object recognition research, and it is thought that this technology can be used for augmented reality through 3D sound.

  • The wild animal warning post and the echo-bridge on the road are widely used as a popular roadkill prevention system. The warning post shows a one way warning message to drivers and is not effective to prevent animals from being killed. In the case of echo-bridge, the construction cost is very high such that we could not build sufficient number of the echo bridges on the road. Therefore, we have proposed a new roadkill prevention system which is designed and implemented to warn both of drivers and animals. This system is composed with sensor, speaker, web server, and navigation system and the software is designed to use web services on the web under the. Net environment.
