A New Record of Sea Urchin (Echinoidea: Camarodonta: Strongylocentrotidae) Based on Morphological and Molecular Analysis in Korea

  • Some echinoids were collected from the coast of Gangwon-do during the period from November 2008 to July 2011 and were identified on the basis of morphological characteristics and molecular analysis of cytochrome oxidase subunit I mitochondrial DNA. Among them, Strongylocentrotus pallidus (Sars, 1871) belonging to the family Strongylocentrotidae of the order Camarodonta is reported for the first time in Korea and is redescribed. The genetic differences ranged from 0.038 to 0.139 between S. pallidus and four other species of genus Strongylocentrotus, but ranged from 0.002 to 0.005 between Korean specimens and GenBank data of S. pallidus. This species is widely distributed in cold sea water along the western part of the North Pacific and the Northwest Atlantic.

  • Some sea urchins were collected from the subtidal rocky bottom of Munseom near Seogwipo, Jejudo Island by SCUBA diving from April to May, 2008 and identified on the basis of their morphological characteristics. Among them, Tripneustes gratilla (Linnaeus, 1758) of Family Toxopneustidae was newly recorded from Korea and redescribed on the specimen collected at a depth of 25 m between Munseom and Sekkiseom. The detailed morphological description was presented with the photographs. This species was characterized by the very naked median areas of ambulacral and interambulacral portions and this genus was the first record in Korea. Eighteen echinoids are so far recorded in Jejudo Island, Korea.

  • Some sea urchins were collected from the subtidal rocky bottom along the coastal line in Jeju Island by SCUBA diving in April 2005 and identified on the basis of their morphological characteristics. Among them, Asthenosoma ijimai Yochiwara, 1897 was newly recorded from Korea and redescribed based on the specimen collected at 20m deep in southern breakwater of Seogwipo harbor. The order Echinothurioida including family Echinothuriidae and genus Asthenosoma was firstly recorded in Korea. Seventeen species of echinoids are reported to be distributed in Jeju Island of Korea.

  • This paper is a part of the regional characteristics of Korean chotkal. The kinds and materials of Korean chotkals are studied by interviewing local people living in 142 different regions which are bigger than 'myon' in size. Regions are classified according to the structural style of commoner's house. Regional characteristics of chotkal are analyzed and interpreted with natural environmental factor. The rest of my further interested subject will be followed in later issues ; the ways of preservation, period of fermentation according to the regional characteristics and uses of Korean chotkal. The results of this study can be summerized as follows, 1. There are 145 different kinds. 2. Raw materials of 145 kinds of chotkal are devided roughly into five groups ; (1) fishes in 87 kinds (2) Pelecypoda and Gastropoda in 14 kinds (3) Cephalopoda in 10 Kinds (4) Crustacea in 32 kinds and (5) Holothuroidea and Echinoidea in 2 kinds. They can also be classified according to the parts of individual material ; (1) body or flesh in 118 kinds (2) internal organs in 15 kinds and (3) eggs in 12 kinds. Regions are devided into four provinces ; 'Kwanso', 'Chungbu', 'Nambu', and 'Kwanbuk' in which the number of different kinds of chotkal are 32, 41, 99 and 34, respectively. Raw materials vary because of the distribution of marine life in different regions. Fishes and Cephalopoda are used in all four regions, Pelecypoda and Gastropoda in 'Kwanso', 'Chungbu' and western part of 'Nambu' regions. Different species of Crustacea used in each different regions ; sea crab and sea shrimp in the western coastal area, fresh water crab in the field area, fresh water shrimp in 'Chollado', mantis crab at 'Shihung-gun' in 'Kyonggi-do', Holothuroidea and Echinoidea are used in 'Nambu' regions. Chotkal are not used at all in six local districts which are located in inland areas where the transportation is inconvenient.

A New Record of Sea Urchin (Echinoidea: Stomopneustoida: Glyptocidaridae) from the Yellow Sea, Korea

  • Sea urchins were collected from waters adjacent to Daludo Island and Mohang harbor in the Yellow Sea, and were identified into Glyptocidaris crenularis A. Agassiz, 1864, of the family Stomopneustidae within the order Stomopneustoida, based on morphological characteristics. This species has two unique morphological characteristics: the ambulacral plate is composed of three primary plates and two demi-plates, and a valve of globiferous pedicellaria consists of with a well-developed long terminal hook and a unique stalk equipped with one to six long lateral processes covering membranes, resembling fins. It is newly recorded in Korea and is described with photographs. This brings the total number of sea urchins reported from the Yellow Sea, Korea, to seven.

A Newly Recorded Sea Urchin (Echinoidea: Spatangoida: Spatangidae) from Geomundo Island, Korea

  • A sea urchin was collected from Geomundo Island of Jeollanam-do, Korea on July 3, 2009. This specimen was classified as Spatangus luetkeni A. Agassiz 1872 belonging to the family Spatangidae of order Spatangoida based on the morphological characteristics. This genus and species are newly recorded in Korea. It is distinct morphological characters that test is thick and strong, six to eight primary tubercles are in 1 and 4 interambulacra, sternum is equipped with little keel, and color in alcohol is dark violet. This species inhabits tropical waters and usually distributes over the West Pacific from southern Japan to New Zealand.

  • A sea urchin was collected from 140 m deep at Gapado which is nearby Moseulpo in Jejudo Island, Korea on 30 June 2010. This specimen was classified as Echinolampas koreana H.L. Clark 1925, belonging to family Echinolampadidae of order Echinolampadoida based on its morphological characteristics. This order and lower categories are newly recorded from Korea. Distinct morphological characters of this species are as follows: test is relatively high. Abactical system has four large genital pores. Periproct is slightly sunken and situated below equator line. Peristome is very small and rather deeply sunken. Tridentate and ophiocephalous pedicellariae are present. Color in alcohol is light purple. These morphological characters are re-described with illustrations.

  • Echinoids were collected at depths of 5-10 m in Munseom, Jeju Island by SCUBA diving on November 23, 2008 and September 15, 2009. Two specimens were identified as Echinometra mathaei (Blainville, 1825) based on morphological characteristics and molecular analyses of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I partial sequences. Echinometra mathaei collected from Korea was redescribed with photographs and was compared with other species from GenBank based on molecular data. Phylogenetic analyses showed that no significant differences were between base sequences of E. mathaei from Korea and that from GenBank. To date, 13 echinoids including this species have been reported from Jeju Island, and 32 echinoids have been recorded in Korea.

  • Some echinoids were collected at about 20m depth of the sea in Moseulpo of Jejudo Island. Among them two species, Diadema setosum (Leske, 1778) and Toxopneu-stes pileolus(Lamarck, 18716), turned out to be new to the Korean fauna. They were redescribed on the morphological characteristics with illustrations. The order Diadematoida is new to Korea. Fourteen echinoids species so far have been report-ed from the sea around Jejudo Island in Korea.
