Germinating ability of 54 weed species collected throughout Korea in 1987 and 1988 was determined in incubator at $25^{\circ}C$ for 15 days. The seeds of Echinochloa sp, collected from 70 different places throughout Korea, were classified by Yabuno's seed morphology method. Plant characters of two identified Echinochloa species, one having two subspecies were evaluated. SDS-PAGE(sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis) of seed protein assay was used to identify locally collected Echinochloa species classified by Yabuno's seed morphology method. 1. Out of 54 weed species collected, 31 species showed germination at 15 days after incubation, and 14 species showed over 50% and no germination was observed in 24 species, indicating that approximately 40 species had varied degree of germinating ability. 2. It was confirmed that two annual species of Echinochloa such as E. oryzicola and E. crus-galli occurred in Korea and one of which particularly E. crus-galli has two subspecies such as E. c. var. praticola and E. c. var. crus-galli. 3. E. oryzicola was distinguished from E. c. var crus-galli and E. c. var praticola by presence or absence of one major protein band in B zone. However, it was rather difficult to distinguish E. crus-galli species because they showed similar protein pattern.
This study was carried out to evaluate the interaction effect between molinate(S-ethyl N,N-hexamethylene-thiocarbamate) and simetryn(N,N'-diethyl-6-(methythio)-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine) on weed bioefficacy and rice phytotoxicity in green house and paddy field. Combined application of molinate and simetryn showed synergistic herbicidal effect to Echinochloa crus-galli and additive herbicidal effect to Bidens tripartita, However, it showed synergistic phytotoxicity to rice. Combined application of molinate and simetryn reduced the flooding period desirable for controlling Echinochloa crus-galli by about 2~4days as compared to single application of molinate. It was concluded that the optimum combination of molinate and simetryn was 150g and 9g to 18g a.i./10a, respectively in viewpoint of bioefficacy and phytotoxicity.
Restoration of ecosystems degraded by heavy metal pollution can be accomplished by soil amendment and selection and utilization of plants tolerant to heavy metals. Two former zinc mine sites, Sambo Mine in Hwasung, Kyonggi-do and the Second Yonhwa Mine in Samchuk, Kangwon-do, were selected for collection of plant samples and for determination of heavy metal tolerant species. Dominant species on mine waste deposits in Hwasung site were Panicum bisulcatum and Echinoch/oa crus-galli, while those in Samchuk site were Aster yomena, Setaria viridis, Artemisia lavandulaefolia and Oenothera odorata. Mean contents of zinc, lead and cadmium in Hwasung soil were 103, 117 and 1 ppm, respectively, while those in Samchuk soil were 23, 6 and 4 ppm, respectively, Zinc contents were higher in Echinochloa crus-galli from Hwasung and in Artemisia lavandulaefolia from Samchuk, while lead contents were higher in Panicum bisulcatum and Echinochloa crus-galli from Hwasung and Lactuca sonchiJolia and Pinus densiJolia from Samchuk. Plant species with higher cadmium contents were Panicum bisulcatum and Lactuca sonchiJolia. Comparison of metal contents between roots and shoots showed that Echinochloa crus-galli was a zinc accumulator, while Panicum bisulcatum, Persicaria hydroPiPer, Pinus densiJlora and Lactuca sonchiJolia were zinc excluders. In addition, Panicum bisulcatum and Persicaria hydroPiPer were proved to be lead excluders. When both heavy metal contents in plant tissues and biomass of individual plants are considered, it can be concluded that Echinochloa crus-galli and Panicum bisulcatum from Hwasung and Artemisia lavandulaefolia and Aster yomena are heavy metal absorbing plants. The effect of heavy metals on seed germination showed that Artemisia princeps var. orientalis had higher germination rates, but no significant difference in concomitant decrease of germination rates among the species investigated were found by increasing heavy metal contents.
Rice (Oryza sativa L.) contains water-soluble substances that inhibit the germination of Echinochloa crus-galli. This study investigated the allelopathic potential of rice in which rice had been grown with E. crus-galli in the field. Extracts of forty-seven rice varieties were screened for allelopathic potential in the laboratory. Double distilled water was used as a control. Based on the germination percentage, the varieties may be classified in the following order of decreasing inhibition : Namweon(36%) and Gyehwa(38%) hulls extracts and Sambaeg(43%) and Seoan(46%) leaves extracts. In the comparison of allelopathic activity test between leaves and hulls extracts, hulls extracts contain more allelopathic toxic substances. In the effect of concentration treatment on the six levels of extract solutions(3, 6, 12, 25, 50, 100%, v/v) germination percentage was significantly inhibited as the extract concentration increased. The highest concentration(100%) caused the greatest reduction in E. crus-galli. Allelopathic potential effects were significantly different among the various varieties and between '94 and '95 year extracts. The results indicate that there are genetic differences among varieties for allelopathic potentiality on E. crus-galli. Allelopathic potential in the ecological aspects can be decided through variety selection.
Seed size and days required to reach specific growth stages were determined for Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P. Beauv. varieties which are major grass species found in Korean paddy field and the results were compared with E. frumentacea (Roxb.) Link. In addition, responses of the Echinochloa species on preemergence herbicides (molinate, esprocarb, and mefenacet) were investigated with respect to time of application. One thousand seed weight of E. crus-galli var. oryzicola was about 3 times heavier than that of var. praticola, but was not significantly different that of E. frumentacea. Days requited to reach the 2.5 leaf-stage (LS) were 11, 13, and 14 days after seeding for E. frumentacea, E. crus-galli var. oryzicola, and E. crus-galli var. praticola, respectively. E. crus-galli var. praticola was more sensitive to molinate, esprocarb and mefenacet than var. oryzicola and the sensitivity of both the varieties decreased as the time of application LS was delayed. However, there was no great difference in the response for E. frumentacea when applied between 1.5 and 3.0 LS. In thiocarbamate hebicides esprocarb was more active to Echinochloa species than molinate and the higher the active ingredient of the herbicides, the greater was the activity to Echinochloa species. Differential susceptibility of Echinochloa species to the herbicides was not related to the seed size, but to the early growth stages at the time of herbicide application which were affected by the seed size.
This experiment was conducted with pot trial to evaluate effects of pretilachlor [2-chloro-2', 6'-diethyl-N(n-propoxythyl) acetanilide], pyrazoxyfen [ 1,3-dimethyl-4-(2,4-dichloro benzoyl)-5-phenacyloxy-pyrazole], pyrazolate (4-(2,4-dichloro benzoyl)-1,3-dimethyl-pyrazol-5-yl-p-toluenesulphonate] and their combinations on Echinochloa crew-galli. Herbicides were treated with different dosages under 3 cm water depth at 1st and 2nd leaf stages of E. crus-galli. E. crus-galli showed stunted symptom by treatment of pretilachlor and etiolation by treatment of pyrazoxyfen or pyrazolate after 4 days from treatment. Stunting and chlorosis degrees of E. crusgalli increased with high dosage of all herbicides at lst and 2nd leaf stage. Combination of pyrazoxyfen+pretilachlor (6+1.5)G or pyrazolate+pretilachlor (6+1.5)G showed positive synergistic effect of herbicidal action on E. crus-galli, therefore these combinations can control E. crux galli in paddy field with lower dosage than each single treatment of herbicides. Herbicidal effect of pyrazoxyfen on E. crus-galli was similar to pyrazolate in single treatment and combination with pretilachlor.

In order to deal with the problem that phytoremediation takes long time in achieving the practical effect, the enhanced phytoremediation by Barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli) was conducted. In addition, we examined the synergistic effect by adding PSM (phosphate -solubilizing microbes) and EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) to the arsenic contaminated soil in the vicinity of the abandoned mine. The removal efficiency of arsenic in the site with PSM application increased about 16% when compared to control site, which was due to increase of plant biomass. The EDTA has been successfully utilized in respect of enhanced mobility and solubility of arsenic in the soil. As a result, BF (bioaccumulation factor) significantly increased but the inhibition of plant growth resulted in 20% reduction of arsenic removal efficiency. The application of PSM and EDTA may enhance the efficiency of phytoremediation. However, the time and method of EDTA application should be further examined to reach the maximum removal efficiency.
Seed occurrence patterns of Echinochloa crus-galli (L) P. Beauv. and Monochoria vaginalis (Burm. f.) Presl. were investigated in irrigated and rainfed rice cultures. There was not much difference in seed population of E. crus-galli between irrigated and rainfed fields, but M. vaginalis occurred in about 1.6-fold greater number in rainfed fields. In seed distribution patterns under the two conditions, about 50% and 30% of E. crus-galli and M. vaginalis, respectively, were found in the uppermost 5cm layer. Under both conditions M. vaginalis was distributed to a depth of 25cm, but distribution of E. crus-galli was only 15cm deep. Early rice transplanting brought about greater emergence of the two weeds than optimal or late transplanting. Emergence of the weeds was significantly greater in single cropping system of rice than in double cropping systems of rice followed by barley and/or strawberry.
Three varieties of Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv. and five collections different in gross morphology from the E. crus-galli species were obtained in a lowland rice field located in Jukjeol-Ri, Soyang-Myeon, Wanju-Kun, Jeonbug to compare the ecological and physiological characteristics. There were great variations in seed dormancy, relative growth rates, days required to panicle emergence and panicle morphology among the collections. On the basis of the cluster analysis using the different characteristics, the collections were divided into three groups; E. crus-galli var. frumentaceae and its two ecotypcs, E. crus-galli var. echinata and its two ecotypes, and E crus-galli var. crus-galli and its one ecotype. There were differential responses in percent germination and post-germination growth of the collections to butachlor (2-chloro-2', 6'-diethyl-N-butoxymethyl acetanilide).
Echinochloa colona is one of the most problematic weeds in the paddy fields of the world. In recent years, this species is likely to be introduced in Korea due to global warming, the expansion of international trade including agricultural products, and increasing tourists. We tried to identify the species from Korean Echinochloa crus-galli and E. oryzicola in order to establish the control measures in case of the initial influx. For this study, Echinochloa colona collected from the National Plant Germplasm System, USA were examined and E. crus-galli and E. oryzicola were collected in Korea. It is, however, very difficult to identify for Echinochloa species using morphological characters because of numerous interspecific and intraspecific types found in nature. Thus, we barcoded the species using rbcL, matK, and ITS. All three markers identified E. colona very well from the others. ITS alone may be enough as a DNA barcode for E. colona identification, when considering cost and effectiveness. The barcode sequences were deposited to the National Center for Biotechnology Information database for public use.
