Vibrations and noise in electrical machines are directly related to the characteristics of the radial forces on one hand, and mechanical behavior on the other [1, 4]. The characteristics of these forces depend on the air gap flux density, which is also influenced by other factors, such as stator slots and poles, saturation level, winding type, and certain faults. The aim of this work is to investigate the effect of eccentricity and demagnetization faults on electromagnetic noise generated by the external surface of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine [PMSM]. For this purpose, an analytical electromagnetic vibroacoustic model is developed. The results confirm the effect of eccentricity and demagnetization fault in generating some low modes radial forces.
Condition monitoring of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) and detecting faults such as eccentricity and demagnetization are essential for ensuring system reliability. Motor current signal analysis is the most commonly used precursor for detecting faults in the PMSM drive system. However, the current signature responds sensitively to the load and temperature of the motor, thereby making it difficult to monitor faults in real- applications. Therefore, in this study, a condition monitoring methodology that detects motor faults, including their classification with standstill conditions, is proposed. The objective is to detect and classify faults of PMSMs by using programmable inverter without additional sensors and systems for detection. Both DC and AC were applied through the d-axis of a three-phase motor, and the change in incremental inductance was investigated to detect and classify faults. Simulation with finite element analysis and experiments were performed on PMSMs in healthy conditions as well as with eccentricity and demagnetization faults. Based on the results obtained from experiments, the proposed method was confirmed to detect and classify types of faults, including their severity.
Eccentricity faults more or less exist in all rotating electrical machines. This paper establishes a more precise model of dynamic eccentricity (DE) in electrical machines named as curved dynamic eccentricity. It is a kind of axial unequal eccentricity which has not been investigated in detail so far but occurs in large electrical machines. The inductances of a large three-phase squirrel-cage induction machine (SCIM) under different levels of curved DE conditions are evaluated using winding function approach (WFA). These inductances include the stator self and mutual inductances, rotor self and mutual inductances, and mutual inductances between stator phases and rotor loops. A comparison is made between the calculation results under curved DE and the corresponding pure DE conditions. It indicates that the eccentricity condition will be more terrible than the monitored eccentricity based on the conventional pure DE model.
The metal processing system usually consists of various components such like motors, work rolls, backup rolls, idle rolls, sensors, etc. Even a simple fault in a single component in the system may cause a serious damage on the final product. It is therefore necessary to diagnose the faults of the components to detect and prevent system failure. Especially, the defects in a work roll are critical to the quality of strip. It is especially difficult to detect faults of a roll by using the existing frequency analysis method if the speed of the roll is changing. In this study, a new diagnosis method for roll eccentricity under the roll speed changes was developed. The new method was induced from analyzing the rolling mechanism by using rolling force models, radius-speed relationship, and measured rolling force, etc. Simulation results by using the field data show that the proposed method is very useful.
This paper presents the technology of condition diagnosis & life estimation on insulation system of the traction motor. In the non-destructive methods for diagnosis of coil insulation state, residual dielectric strength is estimated by the D-map which consist of the partial discharge quantity Q and average degradation degree $\Delta$. In the operating history of machine, the N-Y life estimation method is based on the stop-starting numbers and operating times with considering each degradation factor by the thermal, electrical and heat-cycle stress. With the on-line conditioning monitoring on the currents of traction motors, detecting the abnormal operating state due to bearing faults, stator or armature faults, eccentricity related faults and broken rotor bars can be performed.

Some elevated water tanks have failed due to torsional vibrations in past earthquakes. The overall axisymmetric structural geometry and mass distribution of such structures may leave only a small accidental eccentricity between centre of stiffness and centre of mass. Such a small accidental eccentricity is not expected to cause a torsional failure. This paper studies the possibility of amplified torsional behaviour of elevated water tanks due to such small accidental eccentricity in the elastic as well as inelastic range; using two simple idealized systems with two coupled lateral-torsional degrees of freedom. The systems are capable of retaining the characteristics of two extreme categories of water tanks namely, a) tanks on staging with less number of columns and panels and b) tanks on staging with large number of columns and panels. The study shows that the presence of a small eccentricity may lead to large displacement of the staging edge in the elastic range, if the torsional-to-lateral time period ratio $({\tau})$ of the elevated tanks lies within a critical range of 0.7< ${\tau}$ <1.25. Inelastic behaviour study reveals that such excessive displacement in some of the reinforced concrete staging elements may cause unsymmetric yielding. This may lead to progressive strength deterioration through successive yielding in same elements under cyclic loading during earthquakes. Such localized strength drop progressively develop large strength eccentricity resulting in large localized inelastic displacement and ductility demand, leading to failure. So, elevated water tanks should have ${\tau}$ outside the said critical range to avoid amplified torsional response. The tanks supported on staging with less number of columns and panels are found to have greater torsional vulnerability. Tanks located near faults seem to have torsional vulnerability for large ${\tau}$.
The motor current signature provides an important source of the information for the faults diagnosis of three-phase induction motor. The theoretical principles behind the generation of unique signal characteristics, which are indicative of failure mechanisms, are Presented. The fault detection techniques that can be used to diagnose mechanical Problems, stator and rotor winding failure mechanisms, and air-gap eccentricity are described. A theoretical analysis is presented which predicts the presence of unique signature patterns in the current that are only characteristics of the fault. The predictions are verified by experimental results from a special fault Producing test rig and on-site tests in a steel company. And this study have made new diagnostic algorithm for the operating induction motors with the test results. These developments are including the use of monitoring and analysis of electric current to diagnose mechanical and electrical problems and gave the precise test results automatically.
A down-scaled simulator is developed to simulate typical faults in induction motor such as short-turn stator winding, broken rotor bar, dynamic and static air-gap eccentricity, bearing trouble, and mechanical unbalance. The simulator is used as an initial builder to develop design algorithm for real-time faults detecting system by processing an abnormal signal and characteristics in each fault.
Asymmetric electro-magnetic force caused by the frictional worn bearing, rotor misalignment and unbalanced rotor etc. generates an asymmetrical operation, vibration and electro-magnetic noise. The need for detection of these rotor eccentricities has pushed the development of monitoring methods with increasing sensitivity and noise immunity. This paper is proposed the analysis method of the squirrel-cage induction motor driven by IGBT inverter using finite element method (FEM) and subroutine. The effect of the unbalanced magnetic pull in the inverter-fed induction motor which is in asymmetrical whirling motion is presented. The analysis results of rotor eccentricity could compare with motors which have been made normal air-gap motor and irregular air-gap motor and verify reliability. The simulation and experiment results can be useful for on-line faults detection monitoring system of induction motors.
