Current Design Codes for Reinforced Concrete (RC) interior beam-column joints are based on limited experimental studies on the seismic behavior of eccentric joints. To supplement existing information, an experimental study was conducted that focused on the effect of eccentricity of the deeper beams with respect to the shallow beams. A total of eight one-third scale interior joints with beams of different depths were subjected to reverse cyclic loading. The primary variables in the test specimens were the amount of joint transverse reinforcement and the cross section of the shallow beams. The overall performance of each test assembly was found to be unsatisfactory in terms of joint shear strength, stiffness, energy dissipation and shear deformation. The results indicated that the vertical eccentricity of spandrel beams in this type of joint led to lower capacity in joint shear strength and severe damage of concrete in the joint core. Increasing the joint shear reinforcement was not effective to alter the failure mode from joint shear failure to beam yielding which is favorable for earthquake resistance design, whereas it was effective to reduce the crack width at the small loading stages. Based on the observed behavior, the shear stress of the joint core was suggested to be kept as low as possible for a safe and practical design of this type of joint.
This paper presents a comparative study of the damage potentials for the 2016 Gyeongju and 2017 Pohang earthquakes in Korea. Plausible technical explanations are provided for the more severe damage observed in the 2017 Pohang earthquake in spite of its relatively weaker magnitude and intensity measures based on the response analysis of elastic and inelastic single-degree-of-freedom systems for the recorded ground motions. In addition, a detailed case study was conducted for a fatally damaged piloti building with an eccentric shear wall core based on nonlinear dynamic analysis using the input ground motions modified for the building site.

In this study, three types of large scale multi-tasking machine tools together with core technologies involved have been developed and introduced; a multi-tasking machine tool for large scale marine engine crankshafts, a multi-tasking vertical lathe for windmill parts, and a large scale 5-axis machine tool of gantry type. Several special purpose devices has been necessarily developed for the purpose of handling and machining big and heavy workpieces accurately, such as PTD (Pin Turning Device) with revolving ring spindle for machining eccentric crankshaft pins, hydrostatic rotary table and steady rest for supporting and resting heavy workpieces, and 2-axis automatic swiveling head for high-quality free surface machining. Core technologies have been also developed and adopted on their detail design stage; 1) structural design optimization with FEM structural analysis, 2) theoretical hydrostatic analysis for the PTD and rotary table bearings, 3) box-in-box type cross-rail and octagonal ram design to secure machine rigidity and accuracy, 4) constant spindle rpm control against gravitational torque due to unbalanced workpiece.
Double skin composite wall system owns several structural merits in terms of high load-carrying capacity, large axial stiffness, and favorable ductility. A recently proposed form of truss connector was used to bond the steel plates to the concrete core to achieve good composite action. The structural behavior of rectangular high walls under compression and T-shaped high walls under eccentric compression has been investigated by the authors. Furthermore, the influences of the truss spacings, the wall width, and the faceplate thickness have been previously studied by the authors on short walls under uniform compression. This paper experimentally investigated the effect of width-to-thickness ratio on the compressive behavior of short walls. Compressive tests were conducted on three short specimens with different width-to-thickness ratios. Based on the test results, it is found that the composite wall shows high compressive resistance and good ductility. The walls fail by local buckling of steel plates and crushing of concrete core. It is also observed that width-to-thickness ratio has great influence on the compressive resistance, initial stiffness, and strain distribution across the section. Finally, the test results are compared with the predictions by modern codes.

Recently, the demands of the large scale machine tools gradually increase to machine the large parts, such as large scale crankshaft, yaw and pitch bearings for the wind power generator and the vehicle or aircraft components. But the high technology is necessary in order to develop the huge machine tools. Furthermore, the global market of it has been monopolized by a few companies. So, we need to develop the large scale machine tools and study its core technology to rush into the increasing market. In this study, we carried out the researches for the important core technology of a multi-tasking, machine tool; a large scale 5-axis machine tool of gantry type for multi-task machining. This study is focused on the design of large size gantry type multi-axis machine. In the case of large size of machine the cross rail deflection in the X-axis is significant. To reduce the deflection due to the eccentric spindle head, a special hollow type design in the cross rail with outside ram is adapted in this study. Also, the Zig-Zag motion in the Y-axis is inevitable with the gantry geometry, which is by the un-balancing, different motion at the left and the right columns moving. We tried to reduce the influence of Zig-Zag motion using FEM with different loading conditions at the left and the right side column.
One of the most common strategies for retrofitting as-built reinforced concrete (RC) columns is to enlarge the existing section through the application of a new concrete layer reinforced by both steel transverse and longitudinal reinforcements. The present study was dedicated to developing a comprehensive model to predict the seismic behavior of as-built RC jacketed columns. For this purpose, a new sectional model was developed to perform moment-curvature analysis coupled by the plastic hinge method. In this analysis-oriented model, new methodologies were suggested to address the impacts of axial, flexural and shear mechanisms, variable confining pressure, eccentric loading, longitudinal bar buckling, and varying axial load. To consider the effective interaction between core and jacket, the monolithic factor approach was adopted to extent the response of the monolithic columns to that of a respective RC jacket strengthened column. Next, parametric studies were implemented to examine the effectiveness of the main parameters of the RC jacket strategy in retrofitting as-built RC columns. Ultimately, the reliability of the developed analytical model was validated against a series of experimental results of as-built and retrofitted RC columns.

Pile foundations constructed by the fiber reinforced polymer plastic piles have been used in coastal and oceanic regions in many countries. Generally, fiber reinforced polymer plastic piles are consisted of filament winding FRP which is used to wrap the outside of concrete pile to increase the axial load carrying capacity or pultruded FRP which is located in the core concrete to resist the bending moment arising due to eccentric loading. In this paper, the analytical procedures of hybrid concrete filled FRP tube flexural members are suggested based on the CFT design method. Moreover, the analytical results are compared with the experimental results to obtained by the previous researches. The results of comparison analyses are performed to estimate the accuracy of the analytical procedure for hybrid FRP-concrete composite compression test, members under eccentrical loading.

This paper deals with a study to improve the performance of Moving Coil type Linear Oscillatory Actuator (MC-LOA) considering unbalanced magnetic circuit. MC-LOA has an unbalanced magnetic circuit due to its asymmetric structure. In this type of LOA, the airgap flux density tends to have different magnitude along mover's displacement and the current directions. The above property causes eccentric of displacement center and interferes with the proper oscillation of LOA. Therefore, this paper presents two models having the unbalanced magnetic circuit and the other balanced by the saturated core. In order to compare the characteristics between the two models, a characteristic analysis for both the basic model and the improved model is performed by their dynamic analysis composed of kinetic and electric equations and Finite Element Method (FEM). The propriety of the improved model is verified through the experimental results.

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to investigate the intervention effect obtained by applying an ICF tool to improve the dressing in a patient with rotator cuff syndrome to schematize the problems and approaching with PNF to solve the problems. METHODS: The subject of this study was a 44-year-old patient who underwent surgery after complete right rotator cuff tear. To treat his symptoms, the processes of clinical practice were implemented in the order of examination, assessment, diagnosis, prognosis, intervention, and outcome. During examination, patient information was collected using the ICF core set. In the assessment, the problems were schematized, and an ICF assessment sheet was used to identify the interaction of the problems. The diagnosis was made by clearly describing the causal relationship derived from the assessment in ICF terms. To solve the problems, the intervention was given in the order of indirect, direct, and task based on the philosophy of PNF. To evaluate the outcome, the differences before and after the intervention were compared. Additionally, the comparison for the ICF qualifier is presented with the ICF evaluation display. RESULTS: The results of the study showed clinical advantages in shoulder strength, eccentric control, range of motion, scapular stability, and shoulder pain. Overall, our patient with rotator cuff syndrome showed improvement in dressing and undressing activity in response to the PNF strategy. CONCLUSION: Application of the PNF intervention strategy after complete rotator cuff tear would have a positive effect on patient upper extremity function.

Air conditioning part designs are moving towards higher efficiency and productivity. The expansion device is one of the core parts of an air conditioning system and controls the refrigerant quantity, evaporation load, compression capacity, and condensation capacity. In this study, an electronic expansion valve for two working fluids ($CO_2$ and R134a) was developed for air conditioning systems in vehicles. The valve uses an eccentric cam driving structure instead of a lead screw to decrease manufacturing costs and increase productivity. The pressure resistance and flow rate performance was evaluated using numerical analysis. At maximum operation conditions and burst pressure conditions with $CO_2$, the maximum stresses on the valve model were about 98 MPa and 223 MPa, respectively. The maximum flow rates of $CO_2$ and R134a with different orifice openings were about 550 kg/h and 386 kg/h, respectively. The performance with R134a was verified by experiments.
