  • Concentrically braced frames are limited in their ability to absorb energy during an earthquake However by placing the bracing members eccentric to the beam column joints, an energy absorbing link unit is produced. The energy is absorbed by the link and / or columns deforming inelastically. Three models of a multistorey structure were analyzed using DRAIN-2D computer program .Three link lengths were used in the analyses, 7, 11 and 15 inches. The yield patterns are produced. However it is interesting to note the relative valuses of force and moment obtained.

  • This paper presents a curvature method for analysis of beam-columns with different materials and arbitrary cross-section shapes and subjected to combined biaxial moments and axial load. Both material and geometric nonlinearities (the p-delta effect in this case) were incorporated. The proposed method considers biaxial curvatures and uniform normal strains of discrete cross-sections of beam-columns as basic unknowns, and seeks for a solution of the column deflection curve that satisfies force equilibrium conditions. A piecewise representation of the beam-column deflection curve is constructed based on the curvatures and angles of rotation of the segmented cross-sections. The resulting bending moments were evaluated based on the deformed column shape and the axial load. The moment curvature relationship and the beam-column deflection calculation are presented in matrix form and the Newton-Raphson method is employed to ensure fast and stable convergence. Comparison with results of analytic solutions and eccentric compression tests of wood beam-columns implies that this method is reliable and effective for beam-columns subjected to eccentric compression load, lateral bracings and complex boundary conditions.

  • High strength concrete is a more effective material for columns subject to axial force and moment than for other structural elements. The purpose of this study is to review strength calculation methods for high strength concrete columus by comparison of analytical values and experimental results. The variables of column test under eccentric loading were concrete compressive strength, longitudinal steel ratio, and eccentricity of load. The tied column sections of 120×120mm and 210×210mm were tested and the eccentricity of load varied in the range from 0.16 times to 0.54 times the column depth. The analytical results using the stress-strain relationship to 0.54 times the column depth. The analytical results using the stress-strain relationship as well as the ACI's rectangular block, Zia's modified block, and the trapezoidal block are compared with experimentally obtained data, and discussed in this paper.

  • In this study a multi-objective optimization problem is solved. The objectives used here include simultaneous minimum construction cost in term of sections weight, minimum structural damage using a damage index, and minimum non-structural damage in term of inter-story drift under the applied ground motions. A high-speed and low-error neural network is trained and employed in the process of optimization to estimate the results of non-linear time history analysis. This approach can be utilized for all steel or concrete frame structures. In this study, the optimal design of a planar eccentric braced steel frame is performed with great detail, using the presented multi-objective algorithm with a discrete population and then a moment resisting frame is solved as a supplementary example.

  • Due to the asymmetric cross-section of unequal-angle steel, the application of loads can induce axial rotation, leading to a series of buckling failure behaviors. Special attention must be paid during the design process. The present study aims to analyze the structural behavior of asymmetric steel angle members under various eccentric loading conditions, considering the complex biaxial bending interaction that arises when the angle steel is connected to the panel. Several key factors are investigated in this paper, including the effects of uniaxial and biaxial eccentricity on the structural behavior and the eccentric axial compression strength of long and short legs at different load application points. Potential risks associated with the specified load points, based on the AISC specifications, are also discussed. The study observed that the strength values of the members exhibited significant changes when the eccentric load deviates from the specified point. The relative position of the eccentric load point and the slenderness ratio of the member are critical influencing factors. Overall, this research intends to enhance the accuracy and reliability of strength analysis methods for asymmetric single angle steel members, providing valuable insights and guidance for a safer and more efficient design.

  • The monopile-friction wheel hybrid foundation is an innovative solution for offshore structures which are mainly subjected to large lateral eccentric load induced by winds, waves, and currents during their service life. This paper presents an extensive numerical analysis to investigate the lateral load and moment bearing performances of hybrid foundation, considering various potential influencing factors in sand-overlaying-clay soil deposits, with the complex lateral loads being simplified into a resultant lateral load acting at a certain height above the mudline. Finite element models are generated and validated against experimental data where very good agreements are obtained. The failure mechanisms of hybrid foundations under lateral loading are illustrated to demonstrate the effect of the friction wheel in the hybrid system. Parametric study shows that the load bearing performances of the hybrid foundation is significantly dependent of wheel diameter, pile embedment depth, internal friction angle of sand, loading eccentricity (distance from the load application point to the ground level), and the thickness of upper sandy layer. Simplified empirical formulae is proposed based on the numerical results to predict the corresponding lateral load and moment bearing capacities of the hybrid foundation for design application.

  • In this paper, we investigated the maximum ankle joint plantarflexion moment(MPM) of young and elderly subjects during various modes of isokinetic contractions with special interest in the elderly females who were reported to have higher fall rate than the elderly males. Subjects include the young subjects(14 males: $22.7{\pm}2.5yrs$, 13 females: $20.5{\pm}1.3yrs$) and the elderly subjects(17 males: $65.8{\pm}10.5yrs$, 26 females: $71.4{\pm}5.2yrs$). The MPM was normalized by each subject's body weight. The MPM of elderly females was the weakest among the groups, particularly, at the eccentric contractions. The male-to-female ratio of MPM was greater in the elderly than in the young and the young-to-elderly ratio of MPM was greater in female than in male, both during the eccentric contractions. The result suggests that the decreased muscle force per body weight, especially at the eccentric contraction, may be one reason for the more frequent fall of the elderly female than the elderly male.

  • Recently, CFT Column has reported a lot of study result, because a CFT column has certain superior structural properties as well as good productivity, execution efficiency, and improved rigidity over existing column. However, CFT column still has problems clearing the capacity evaluation between its steel tube member and high-strength concrete materials. Also, high-strength concrete filled steel square tube column(HCFT) examined numerical value explanatorily about transformation performance(M-ø) of when short-column receives equal flexure-moment from axial stress on research for concrete. hnd, with basis assumption, executed development of analysis program of moment-curvature relation for analytic analysis of transformation performance of HCFT section that get by an experiment. This study investigated to properties of structural(capacity, curvature), through a series of experiments for HCFT with key parameters, such as strength of concrete(600kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$), D/t ratio, slenderness ratio(λ) and concrete kinds under eccentric load. And, I executed comparative analysis with AISC-LRFD, AIJ and Takanori Sato etc. and experiment result that is capacity design formula.

  • Exterior plate-column connection has an unsymmetrical critical section for eccentric shear of which perimeter is less than that of interior connection, and hence, around the connection, unbalanced moment and eccentric shear are developed by both gravity load and lateral loads. Therefore, exterior connection is susceptible to punching shear failure. Current design provision cannot accurately explain strength of existing experiments, partly due to the complexity in the behavior of exterior plate-column connection, or partly due to the theoretical deficiency of the strength analysis model adopted. In the present study, nonlinear finite element analyses were performed for exterior connections belonging to continuous flat plate. For each direction of lateral load, the behavior and strength of exterior plate-column connection were quite different. Based on the numerical result, strength prediction model for exterior connection was proposed for each direction of lateral load. Compared with existing experiments, the proposed method was verified.

  • Flat plate slab has been widely used in high rise building for its remarkable advantages. However, Flat plate structures under lateral load are susceptible to punching shear of the slab-column connection. Exterior slab-column connections has an unsymmetrical critical section for eccentric shear of which perimeter is less than that of interior connection, and hence, around the connection, unbalanced moment and eccentric shear are developed by both gravity load and lateral loads. Therefore, exterior connections is susceptible to punching shear failure. For that reason, this study compare ACI 318-05 to CEB-FIP MC 90 that is based on experiment results and existing data of flat plate exterior connections. This study shows that compared to CEB-FIP MC 90 is more exact about eccentric shear stress, unbalanced moment and Both of all are not suitable in large column aspect ratio. Considering gravity shear ratio, These are suitable but design condition only consider gravity shear ratio. So these should be considered differences from change of design condition
