The purpose of this study was to compare the muscle activities of Double Legged Jump (DLJ) and Single Legged Jump (SLJ) by the normalization of muscle activity. Eight college students without the lower extremity injuries were selected as subjects for collecting EMG data of vastus medialis and gastrocnemius. The entire section of motion was established as eccentric and concentric contractions, and each of the contractions was divided into three sections with equal timing intervals, which becomes a total of 6 phases. The EMG data of each phase was integrated and normalized. The muscle activities of the vastus medialis for both eccentric and concentric contractions were significantly different between DLJ and SLJ(p<.05). The increase in overall muscle activity of SLJ was 33.6%. Approximately, there was an increase of 25.9% in eccentric contraction and 40% in concentric contraction. Moreover, the data of the muscle activity of gastrocnemius was similar to the data of the muscle activity of vastus medialis. In conclusion, this research suggests muscle activity of a certain motion can be normalized for an analysis of another motion.

Purpose : This study investigated the effects of concentric and eccentric contractions on muscle strength using an isokinetic dynamometer (ID) in college students in their 20s. It aimed to understand the impact of differences between the dominant and non-dominant sides on strength asymmetry and to elucidate the clinical implications of these differences to establish an appropriate posture and environment for patients. Methods : The experiment was conducted with 30 healthy adult participants. Prior to the experiment, participants underwent a warm-up targeting the shoulders, and efforts were made to eliminate factors that could potentially influence the measurement results. Subsequently, the maximum safe range of motion of shoulder joint abduction, extension, and flexion was measured using an isokinetic muscle function testing device. Muscle strength was assessed using concentric and eccentric contractions alternating between the dominant and non-dominant sides, and paired sample t-tests were used for the analysis. Results : There was no significant difference between bilateral peak torques for eccentric contraction in shoulder joint abduction, extension, and flexion (p>0.05). There was also no significant difference between bilateral peak torques for concentric contraction in shoulder joint abduction, extension and flexion (p>0.05). Conclusion : This study found no statistically significant difference in muscle strength between the dominant and non-dominant sides during concentric and eccentric contractions. However, previous studies have shown significant differences between the dominant and non-dominant sides during eccentric and concentric contractions during internal shoulder rotation in the general population, as well as significant differences in the upper trapezius muscle. Therefore, further research is needed to support the application of different intensities for bilateral muscle strengthening exercises in clinical practice.
D. W. HAN. Y. R. AHN., N. J. LEE and E. J. LEE. Effects of Combined Restistance Training Program of Concentric and Eccentric Contraction Using Theraband on Shoulder Rotation Torque Max and Peak Power. Korean Joumal of Sport Biomechanics, Vol. 19, No. 1, pp. 139-148, 2009. The purpose of this study was to find out that combined concentric with eccentric resistance training program using Thera-Band was more effective than only concentric resistance training program on shoulder rotation torque max and peak power. 30 female students were randomly assigned to 3 equal group; concentric and eccentric, concentric, non training group. Subjects were tested in concentric and eccentric torque max and peak power of internal and external rotation using a CON-TERX isokinetic dynamometer. Subjects in training group participated in their regular five times a week for 4 weeks. After exercise, in concentric and eccentric training group, concentric and eccentric torque max, and peak power of internal rotator at 60 deg/sec were increased significantly. concentric peak power at 120 deg/sec were increased significantly. In concentric training group, only concentric peak power of internal rotator at 60 and 120 deg/sec was increased. In conclusion, we found out that combined concentric with eccentric resistance training program using Thera-Band was more effective than only concentric resistance training program on shoulder rotation torque max and peak power.
The purpose of this study is to provide guideline of muscle strengthening exercise for preparing ambulation by presenting suitable ratio of muscle power of agonist & antagonist, and that of concentric & eccentric contraction on behalf of amputee's normal ambulation training and it's strenthening as well. 7 Subjects who have femur amputee for experimental group were able to ambulate naturally without inconvenience and 20 adult subjects of comparison group for comparison were considered to be free from disturbance of ambulation. The method of study was to measure the muscle power of hip pint, was to figure out the ratio of agonist & antagonist, concentric contraction & eccentric contraction, and was to find out mean and standard deviation of each measurement. Every numerical value of comparison was tested by Mann-whitney and comparison group's comparison between left & right value was done with t-test. Results are as followings : 1) Extension force was stronger than flexor force and had no remarkable difference(p<0.05) 2) For normal adults, adduction farce was stronger than abduction force and for amputees, abduction force was stronger while adduction force was the same as the normal without showing remarkable difference(p<0.05) According the result above, I make an assumption that maintaining a proper ratio of muscle power on strengthening exercise for amputee's ambulation training & rehabilitation and finally bring out an improvement of transfer and ambulation.

Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze kinetic variables between thermotherapy and dynamic warm-up during drop-landing. Method: Twenty male healthy subjects (Age: 21.85 ± 1.90 years, Height: 1.81 ± 0.06 cm, Weight: 68.5 ± 7.06 kg) underwent three treatments applied on the thermotherapy of femoral muscles and a dynamic warm-up. The thermotherapy was performed for 15 minutes while sitting in a chair using an electric heating pad equipped with a temperature control device. Dynamic warm-up performed 14 exercise, a non-treatment was sitting in a chair for 15 minutes. Core temperature measurements of all subjects were performed before landing at a height of 50 cm. During drop-landing, core temperature, joint angle, moment, work of the sagittal plane was collected and analyzed. All analyses were performed with SPSS 21.0 and for repeated measured ANOVA and Post-hoc was Bonferroni. Results: Results indicated that Thermotherapy was increased temperature than other treatments (p = .000). During drop-landing, hip joint of dynamic warm-up was slower for angular velocity (p < .005), and left ankle joint was fastest than other treatments (p = .004). Maximum joint moment of dynamic warm-up was smaller for three joints (hip extension: p = .000; knee flexion/extension: p = .001/.000; ankle plantarflexion: p = .000). Negative work of dynamic warm-up was smaller than other treatments (p = .000). Conclusion: In conclusion, the thermotherapy in the local area doesn't affect the eccentric contraction of the thigh. The dynamic warm-up treatment minimized the joint moment and negative work of the lower joint during an eccentric contraction, it was confirmed that more active movement was performed than other treatment methods.
In this paper, we attempted to analyze the contraction patterns of elbow flexor muscle during isometric, concentric and eccentric contraction. The analysis parameters are consisted of Sequency domain parameters (mean frequency, median frequency, skewness, kurtosis) and time domain parameters (zero crossing, positive maxima, integrated EMG). As a results, the analysis parameters have specific trends for muscles, muscle contraction patterns, muscle contraction angles. Especially, at the time domain analysis, IEMG is a dominant parameter for analysis of activation patterns, and the skewness, kurtosis are useful parameters for functional recognition.
The purpose of this study was to test the microcurrent electrical neuromuscular stimulation on muscle soreness, serum creatine kinase levels and force deficits evident following a high-intensity eccentric exercise bout. 10 volunteer male subjects were randomly assigned to a treatment group or to a control group. Exercise consisted of high-intensity eccentric contractions of the elbow flexors. Resistance was reduced as subjects fatigued, until they reached exhaustion. Muscle soreness rating was determined using a visual analog scale. Serum creatine kinase levels were analyzed using a blood sample. Force deficits were determined by measures of maximal voluntary isometric contraction at $90^{\circ}$ of elbow flexion on a Orthotron II dynamometer. Muscle soreness rating, serum creatine kinase levels and maximal voluntary isometric contraction were determined at the before exercise and again at 24 and 48 hours postexericse. Treatments were applied immediately following exercise. The control group subjects rested following their exercise bout. Statistical analysis showed significant increases in muscle soreness rating and significant decreases in maximal voluntary isometric contraction when the before exercise was compared with 24 and 48 hour measures(p<0.01). No significant effects were observed between groups in muscle soreness rating and maximal voluntary isometric contraction(p>0.05). Highly significants differences in serum creatine kinase levels were found using on Analysis of variance(ANOVA) repeated measures between groups for each time cycles(p<0.001). This modality may have benefits when used early stage in the muscle damage.
Purpose: In order to examine difference in the activity of potential of spinal neurons and cortical neurons according to muscle contraction type in post stroke hemiplegic subjects and healthy subjects, the present study conducted an experiment as follows. Methods: The subjects in the experimental group were 17 left-side hemiplegic subjects (9 female, 8 male; mean age, 63.41$\pm$9.86 years) with the right hand as the dominant hand selected among post stroke hemiplegic subjects, and 17 age matched healthy control subjects (10 female, 7 male; mean age, 64.12$\pm$12.07 years). Movement-related cortical potentials (MRCPs) were measured using surface electromyography and electroencephalography while concentric and eccentric movements were made alternately. Results: As to the pattern of the activity of MRCP, which indicates the activity of motor cortical neurons, we found that the amplitude is high (p<0.01), the length of excitement is short (p<0.01) and the ascending gradient of amplitude to the peak increases (p<0.05) in post stroke hemiplegic subjects' lesion sites different from healthy subjects. Conclusion: The activity of cortical neurons was no difference in activity according to contraction type was observed in post stroke hemiplegic subjects' lesion sites. This suggests that there is no distinction in the activity of cortical neurons between concentric contraction and eccentric contraction. Accordingly, if post stroke hemiplegic subjects' activity of motor cortex is analyzed by measuring MRCPs, it is considered useful in research on neural plasticity or as a ground of clinical effects in the area of physical therapy for the central nervous system.
Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of squat posture, band position, and contraction type on the muscle activity of the hip abductors during resisted lateral band walking. Design: A cross-sectional survey study Methods: 24 healthy male subjects were recruited, and surface electromyography was used to measure the muscle activity of the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, and tensor fascia lata of the dominant leg during lateral walking exercises. Resistance bands were applied to the knees, ankles, and feet in semi-squat and squat postures, and exercises were randomly performed under six different conditions. Results: The results showed significant differences in muscle activity in the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, and tensor fascia lata according to posture, band position, and contraction type (p<0.05). The muscle activity of the hip abductors increased in the squat posture and with the band placed on the distal joint compared to the proximal joint (p<0.05). Additionally, muscle activity was higher in the eccentric contraction phase than in the concentric contraction phase (p<0.05). Contrary to previous studies, moving the resistance band from the ankle to the foot increased the muscle activity of the tensor fascia lata while the activity of the gluteus maximus and gluteus medius also increased. Conclusions: According to the results, squat posture with a resistance band placed on the feet and using an eccentric contraction phase were found to be the most effective methods for strengthening the hip abductors.
Background: The external rotation (ER) exercise in performed at a 90° abduction of the shoulder joint is an effective to strengthen the infraspinatus. However, failure of the humeral head to control axial rotation during exercise can be increased the posterior deltoid over activity. Biofeedback training is an effective method of promoting motor learning and control it could look forward to activate the infraspinatus selectively by controlling the humeral head during exercise. Objects: The aim of this study was investigated that whether biofeedback for axial rotation was effective to activate selectively the infraspinatus during ER exercise. Methods: The 15 healthy males participated, and all subjects performed both ER exercise in a sitting position with shoulder abducted 90° under conditions with and without axial rotation biofeedback. Exercise was performed in a range of 90° ER, divided into three phases: concentric, isometric, and eccentric. The infraspinatus and posterior deltoid muscle activity were observed using surface electromyography. Results: Both infraspinatus activity (p < 0.01) and infraspinatus to posterior deltoid activity ratio (p = 0.01) were significantly higher with biofeedback however, posterior deltoid activity was significantly lower with biofeedback (p = 0.01). The infraspinatus muscle activity and muscle activity ratio were the highest in the isometric contraction type, and there were significant differences for all contraction types (p < 0.05). Whereas, the posterior deltoid activity was the lowest in the isometric contraction type, and showed a significant difference between isometric and other two contraction types (p < 0.05), but no significant different between concentric and eccentric contraction. Conclusion: Our results indicate that the axial rotation biofeedback during sitting ER exercise might be effective method to activating selective infraspinatus muscle and recommended to enhance the dynamic stability of the shoulder joint.
