The Gochang beach is located in the southwestern coast of Korea along the eastern part of the Yellow Sea, comprising the Donghori, Gwangseungri, and Myeongsasipri beaches from north to south. The Gochang beach is characterized by macro-tide, open-coast, linear shoreline, and sand substrates. This study has investigated annual and seasonal characteristics of surface topography variation and sediment accumulation rate in the Gochang beach. During the five seasons of winter (Feb.), spring (May), summer (Aug.), and fall (Nov.) in 2014 and winter (Feb.) in 2015, the topographic elevation of total 315 sites was measured along three survey lines. It consists of 21 sites at 30 m intervals in each transverse line perpendicular to the shoreline, respectively. Annual accumulation rate of the Gochang beach in 2014 was -0.081 m/yr, indicative of erosional condition. Annual accumulation rates of the comprising beaches represent -0.091m/yr of the Donghori, -0.051 m/yr of the Gwangseungri, and -0.10 m/yr of the Myeongsasipri.
Two hydrographic surveys along with direct current measurements using drogues and moored current meters were conducted in Cheju Strait during April and May, 1983. The data clearly demonstrate that a branch of the Kuroshio characterized by high temperature and high salinity enters the Cheju Strait after turning around the western coast of Cheju-Do. The width of the current turning west of Cheju-Do is about 60 km and reduces to 20∼30 km in the strait, resulting in a high speed(>10 cm/s) at the western entrance and in the middle of the strait, compared with a low speed (>5 cm/s) west of Cheju-Do. The Tsushima Current water also originating from the Kuroshio shows its influence in the eastern part of the Cheju Strait. Thermohaline fronts formed between the warm current waters and the coastal waters suggest the southward extension of the Yellow Sea Coastal Water west of the Cheju Strait. A warming of the warm current waters occurs in May, while a cooling takes place in other areas. The major freshening and cooling of water take place in the middle of the Cheju Strait in May due to the intrusion of cold and low salinity water from the west of the Cheju Strait.
The taxonomic revision of the flounders of the suborder Pleuronectoidei was made based on the specimens collected from the coasts of the Korean Peninsula from 1989 to 1993. The flounders of Korea are composed 34 species belonging to 24 genera and 4 families, and the keys to species, genera and families are provided with redescriptions and distributions. Three species of the flounders are found to be new to Korea : Tarphops oligolepis (Bleeker) of the family Paralichthyidae, Parabothus kiensis (Tanaka) of the family Bothidae and Pleuronectes pallasii Steindachner of the family Pleuronectidae. Laeops lanceolata, previously recorded in the Korean fish list, was found to be synonym of L. kitaharai. The fishes of the families Paralichthyidae and Bothidae were distributed in the Yellow Sea and the southern coast of Korea, while most of the flounder species of the family Pleuronectidae except Limanda yokohamae, Eopsetta grigorjewi, and Pleuronichthys cornutus were found along the eastern coast of Korea. It appears that Korean flounders are similar to those of Chinese and Japanese faunas which include tropical and temperate species without endemics.

This study uses a numerical model to investigate the circulation patterns of the tidal and wind driven current components. The model is vertically averaged 2-D transient using explicit nume-rical scheme, based on equation of motion and continuity. forced by water elevation at open boundaries and wind stress. The model domain extends from 35$^{\circ}$N to 36$^{\circ}$40'N lat., and 125$^{\circ}$E to 126$^{\circ}$40'E long. with x, y grid spacing of 5 km. The model reproduces the tide and tidal currents by 4 major constituents successfully with more than 90% accuracy when compared to two offshore tidal records and currents at one offshore measurements for 22 days. Responses of coastal waters to six schematic wind events are analyzed in terms of current distribution patterns and local features. Regardless of wind directions. strong coastal currents were produced. Bottom topography plays a critical role in producing a local eddy Held whose center is located offshore Pu An with its major radius of 40 km.
In Janghwa-ri of Kanghwa Island morphological changes in four transects, 112 surface, and 2 core sediments were analyzed to understand the seasonal variation of the muddy tidal-flat environment. Sedimentary of facies can be classified into four facies; sand, muddy sand, sandy mud, and silt. During winter, the coarse-grained sediment facies expanded seaward. In the subsurface part of the core sediments, poorly sorted silty sediments dominate the area. According to the Pb-210 isotope analysis, accumulation rates of the tidal flat in Jangwha-ri appear to be $5{\sim}19mm/yr$. In the study area, the result is suggestive of a rapid change in depositional environments in recent years.

In this study we analyzed the spatial and temporal distribution and preferred habitat type of the Kentish plover (Charadrius alexandrinus) based on the 3rd National Ecosystem Survey. Kentish plovers were observed in 97 maps out of a total 842 maps (11.8%) between 2006 and 2012, mainly along the western and southern coasts of Korea. They were also observed in the eastern coast of Korea, inland rivers (Han, Geum, Nakdong, Seomjin, and Yongsan River), the western and eastern coast of Jeju island, and Daecheong Island in the Yellow Sea. The observations were mainly made during the spring breeding season and migration seasons in spring and autumn. The occurrence of kentish plovers was positively influenced by the area of water and wetland according to the middle classification level of land cover type analysis and the area of coastal wetlands in the detailed classification level of land cover types. Most (90%) of the kentish plovers recorded maps had coastal wetlands. Kentish plovers were known to be susceptible to change of habitat. As the occurrence of kentish plovers could be associated with the habitat-change of coastal wetlands and it is possible to estimate the number of individuals, it is recommended that kentish plovers be used as a bioindicator species for the ecological assessment of ecosystem in intertidal zones.
The first magnetotelluric (MT) transect across the Korean Peninsula was obtained traversing from the East Sea shoreline to the Yellow Sea shoreline. The MT survey profile was designed perpendicular to the strike of the principal geologic structure of the Korean Peninsula $(N30^{\circ}E)$, so-called 'China direction'. MT data were achieved at 50 sites with spacings of $3{\sim}8km$ along the 240 km survey line. The impedance responses are divided into four subsets reflecting typical geological units: the Kyonggi Massif, the Okchon Belt, the western part of the Kyongsang Basin, and the eastern part of the Kyongsang Basin. In the western part of the Kyongsang Basin, the thickness of the sedimentary layer is estimated to be about 3 km to 8 km and its resistivity is a few hundred ohm-m. A highly conductive layer with a resistivity of 1 to 30 ohm-m was detected beneath the sedimentary layer. The MT data at the Okchon Belt show peculiar responses with phase exceeding $90^{\circ}$. This feature may be explained by an electrically anisotropic structure which is composed of a narrow anisotropic block and an anisotropic layer. The Kyonggi Massif and the eastern part of Kyongsang Basin play a role of window to the deep geoelectrical structure because of the very high resistivity of upper crust. The second layers with highest resistivities in 1-D conductivity models occupy the upper crust with thicknesses of 13 km in the Kyonggi Massif and 18 km in the eastern Kyongsang Basin, respectively.

Hampyong Bay is a semienclosed and macrotidal bay which opens to the eastern Yellow Sea through a narrow inlet in the southwestern coast of Korea. In order to understand the tidal-flat sedimentation in the semienclosed setting, morphology, sediments, accumulation rate and sea cliff erosion were investigated in the tidal flat of Hampyong Bay. The tidal flat of Hampyong Bay lacks intertidal drainage systems, and generally shows the concave-upward profile whose relief is designated by marked morphological features such as high-tide beaches, intertidal sand shoals and tidal creeks. Surfacial sediments of the tidal flat mainly consist of mud, sandy mud, gravelly mud, gravelly sand and muddy gravel, thus showing the textural characteristics of multimodal grain-size distribution, poorly sorting and positive skewness. The sediments generally coarsen landward due to the increase in coarse fraction content. Sedimentary structures are deeply bioturbated, but parallel lamination and lenticular bedding are locally found in the mudflat near mean low water line. Annual accumulation rates across the tidal flat (along Line SM) average -5.2 cm/yr with a range of -45.8~+4.2 cm/yr, indicating that the tidal flat is erosional. In general, erosion rates of upper and lower tidal flat are higher than those of middle tidal flat. Seasonally, the erosion rates are much higher during spring and winter when dominant wind direction corresponds to the long axis of Hampyong Bay. Sea cliffs are eroded at a rate of 1.4 m/yr. The biggest sea cliff erosion generally occurs 1~2 months later after tidal flats were extensively eroded. Such erosions of tidal Oats and sea cliffs in the semienclosed bay setting are interpreted to be due to wind waves coupled with local sea-level rise.

The purse-seine fishery is very important in the coastal fishery of Korea and the main fish species of this fishery are mackerals and also the main fishing grounds are Tushima Current region, To investigate the relationship between the fishing grounds of mackerels and oceanographic condition, the distribution of mean catches of mackerals of each size (1974~1982) was firstly examined and the oceanographic observation carried out in eastern and western area of Cheju island, being main fishing grounds, in July and October, 1983. The results are as follows: The main fishing grounds of mackerals were also in the Tsushima Current region in southern sea of Korea and the season of the good catches are in May and September to October. The small and medium size of mackerals of which the body lengths are 27 cm to 31 cm, about 2-3 ages, occupied about 90% but the smaller size mackerals of which body lenth is 22 cm (1 age)were about 40 to 70% in February to March. The locations of seasonal fishing grounds could founded by 15$^{\circ}C$ isotherm which indicates the Tsushima Current Water. With trace of this isotherm it was founded that the fishing grounds near the Korean Strait than that of south of Cheju island moves faster northward and/or later southward. The main fishing grounds eastward and westward of Cheju island were the front areas formed between the Tsushima Current Water and the southern coastal water of Korea or Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water. And also the distributions of transparences, water colors and the penetration of sun light of this fishing grounds were similar to that of the temperature, the salinity or volume of planktonic organism.
Three species (0. kinbergi, 0. sarsi and 0 . sarsi vadicola) of the genus Ophiura (Echinodermacta: Ophiuroidea) were sampled from the various localities of Korean waters (Kyonggi Bay in March and September, 1989 and February, 1994; Yellow Sea in September and October, 1992; Southern Sea and Korean Strait in May, 1992; and eastern coasts adjacent to Kangnung in April, July, October, 1993 and January, 1994). Results of the examination of 250 Operational Taxonomical Units (OTUs) are presented based on the 20 morphometric variables to evaluate their taxonomic characters and positions. In cluster analysis, 250 OTUs were divided into 3 phenons (0. kinbergi, 0 . sarsi and 0 . sarsi vadicola) at the Euclidean distance levels of 6.84 and 2 phenons (a phenon composed of 0 . sarsi and 0 . sarsi vadicola and the other of 0. kinbergi) at 7.50. Stepwise discriminant analysis was used in order to produce a good discrimination model and 13 morphological characters (the total number of comb papillae, the number of primary comb papillae and shape of comb papillae (2). etc.) were extracted. The results of canonical discriminant analysis illustrated clear distinction among 3 phenons by the distance of 8.26 between 0 . sarsi and 0. sarsi vadicola, 24.24 between 0 . kinbergi and 0. sarsi vadicola and 21.63 between 0 . kinbergi and 0 . sarsi.
