In this study, variations in water temperature after the passage of typhoons in Korean waters from 2009-2015 were analyzed. Sea surface temperature (SST) images derived from satellite remote sensing data were used, and water temperature information came from real-time mooring buoys at Yangyang, Gangneung, Samcheok and Yeoungdeok, while wind data was supplied by the Korea Meteorological Administration. Differences in SST observed before and after the passage of a typhoon using the SST images were found to be affected by wind direction as well as hot and cool seasonal tendencies. Coastal water temperatures of the eastern part of the Korean peninsula, located to the right of a typhoon, as in the case of typhoons Muifa, Chanhom, Nakri and Tembin, were lowered by a coastal upwelling system from southerly winds across the water's surface at depths of 15m and 25m. In particular, typhoons Chanhom and Tembin decreased water temperatures by about $8-11^{\circ}C$ and $16^{\circ}C$, respectively. However, temperatures to the left of the typhoons were increased by a downwelling of offshore seawater with a high temperature through the mid and lower seawater layers. After the passage of the typhoons, further mixing of seawater at a higher or lower temperature due to southerly or northerly winds, according to the context, lasted for 1-2 or 4 days, respectively.

This study examines the community characteristics of fish species collected by fyke net from the eastern coastal waters of Yeosu, Korea, during the period from 2020 to 2021. A total of 4,539 fish were sampled and classified into 43 species, 28 families, and 7 orders. The dominant species included Mugil cephalus (14.4%), Konosirus punctatus (10.9%), Lateolabrax japonicus (8.3%), Acanthopagrus schlegelii (7.9%), and Pennahia argentata (7.2%). The diversity index was highest in October (H'=2.888) and lowest in February (H'=2.075). Furthermore, the dominance index was highest in March (DI=0.524) and lowest in December (DI=0.178). Hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) revealed that fish communities could be divided into three groups based on Bray-Curtis similarity. Group 1, consisting mainly of species collected from June to October, formed one cluster. Group 2, including winter spawning species such as Pseudopleuronectes yokohamae, Clupea pallasii, and Hexagrammos otakii, sampled from November to February, formed another cluster. Group 3, which included species such as Larimichthys polyactis, Amblychaeturichthys hexanema, and Sebastes inermis, formed a cluster collected from March to May. The eastern coast of Yeosu is considered a suitable habitat for fisheries resources, including highly economically valuable species, and it is also assumed to be an important spawning and nursery ground for many fish species.
A study on seasonal characteristics of phytoplankton dynamics and environmental factors was carried out at four stations including Mara-do and U-do located in the western and eastern coast of Jeju Island in southern Korea from April 2003 to March 2004. Out of 101 phytoplankton species identified, 84 belong to Bacillariophyceae, 9 Dinophyceae, 6 phytoflagellates and 2 coccolithophorids, and the highest value of species diversity was observed in April. Phytoplankton was more abundant at the western coast than at the eastern coast from March to September and its highest abundance was 49.24 ${\times}$ 10$^3$ cells L$^{-1}$ at Mara-do in July. The pennate diatoms were more abundant at the western coast than at the eastern coast with the highest abundance of 38.75 ${\times}$ 10$^3$ cells L$^{-1}$ at Mara-do in July, and during this period Nitzschia longissima contributed 68.5% of the total phytoplankton abundance. Naviculaceae was more abundant at Gosan (western coast) in November when Stauroneis membranacea represented 80.1% of the abundance. Leptocylindrus dances contributed 49.4% of the abundance at U-do in November. Dinophyceae was more abundant at U-do in August. Water temperature and pH fluctuated from 11.7${^{\circ}C}$ to 27.1${^{\circ}C}$ and from 7.31 to 8.70, respectively. Water temperature of Mara-do was about 1-2${^{\circ}C}$ higher than the other stations. Salinity varied from 30.4 to 35.0 psu with the minimum in rainy season and the maximum at the end of winter. The concentration of NH$_4$-N, NO$_3$-N, NO$_2$-N, PO$_4$-P and SiO$_2$-Si ranged 0.07-6.79, 1.0-62.0, 1.0-8.0, 1.0-7.0 and 7.0-191.0 $\mu$g-at L$^{-1}$, respectively. Chlorophyll a concentrations varied from 0.10 to 1.17 $\mu$g L$^{-1}$. NH$_4$-N concentrations were high at U-do from May to December, and at Mara-do from January to February. The high concentrations of NO$_3$-N were found at Mara-do from June to September and at U-do from January to May. The effects of various physicochemical parameters on the seasonal distribution and succession of phytoplankton population suggest that there is a classical pattern of phytoplankton dynamics in Jeju coastal waters.

We investigated marine environmental characteristics of Goheung coastal areas in August where is known to be the first outbreak site of Cochlodinium polykrikoides (hereafter C. polykrikoides) blooms, based on the oceanographic data observed from 1993 to 2013 around the Korean southern coastal waters including Eastern China Sea by National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI). The data of NOAA/NGSST satellite images as well as numerical simulation results by Seo et al. [2013] were also used for analysis. Water temperatures at the surface and bottom layers in Goheung coast, i.e. Narodo, were $25.0^{\circ}C$ and $23.7^{\circ}C$ so that they were higher than $23.8^{\circ}C$ and $19.4^{\circ}C$ in Geoje coast where is a reference site, respectively. In addition, salinities at the surface and bottom layers in Goheung coast were 31.78 psu and 31.98 psu so that they were a little higher than 31.54 psu at the surface but a little lower than 32.79 psu at the bottom in Geoje coast, respectively. That is, the differences in water temperature or salinity between the surface and bottom layers in Goheung coast in August were not large compared to Geoje coast. This suggests that stratification in Goheung coast in August is fairly weak or may not be established. In addition, the concentrations of DIN and DIP at the surface layer were 0.068 mg/L ($4.86{\mu}M$) and 0.015 mg/L ($5.14{\mu}M$) in Goheung coast while 0.072 mg/L ($5.14{\mu}M$) and 0.01 mg/L ($0.32{\mu}M$) in Geoje coast, so they did not indicate a meaningful difference. On the other hand, when C. polykrikoides blooms, water temperature and salinity in August at the station 317-22 ($31.5^{\circ}N$, $124^{\circ}E$) of the East China Sea, where is near the mouth of Yangtze River, were $27.8^{\circ}C$ and 31.61 psu, respectively. Thus, water temperature was much higher whereas salinity was almost similar compared to Goheung coast. Furthermore, concentrations of $NO_3-N$ and $PO_4-P$ in the East China Sea in August were remarkably high compared to Goheung coast. When C. polykrikoides blooms, according to not only the image data of satellites NOAA/NGSST but also numerical experiment results by Seo et al.[2013], the freshwater out of Yangtze River was judged to clearly affect the Korean southern coastal waters. Therefore, the supply of nutrients in terms of Yangtze River may greatly contribute to the outbreak of C. polykrikoides blooms in Goheung coast in summer.
A single specimen (700 mm in disc length) of Plesiobatis daviesi, belonging to the family Plesiobatididae, was firstly collected in the north-eastern coastal waters of Jejudo Island, Korea by using a bottom trawl on 24 October 2010. This species was characterized by having five pairs of gill openings, tail with one to three large spines, long snout length, long caudal fin, and pleated margin of nasal curtain. It is morphologically similar to Urolophus aurantiacus, but the former is distinguished from the latter by having longer caudal fin and snout length. We add P. daviesi to the Korean fish fauna and suggest the new Korean names, "Gin-kko-ri-huin-ga-o-ri-gwa", "Gin-kko-ri-huin-ga-o-ri-sok" and "Gin-kko-ri-huin-ga-o-ri" for the family, genus and species, respectively.
The structure of the ovary, ultrastructure of oocytes and morphological characteristics of vitellogenesis during oogenesis in female Gomphina veneriformis were investigated in clams collected from coastal waters of Samchok, Gangwon-do, Kore. In the previtellogenic oocytes, the Golgi complex was involved in the formation of a number of vacuoles. In the early vitellogenic oocytes, lipid droplets appeared among the Golgi complex, endoplasmic reticulum, and mitochondria in the cytoplasm of the oocyte were involved in the formation of lipid droplets. Coated vesicles, resulting from endocytosis appeared at the basal region of the early vitellogenic oocyte. The uptake of nutritive materials in the coated vesicles formed by receptor-mediated endocytosis appeared through the formation of coated endocytotic pits on the oolemma. In the late vitellogenic oocytes, large yolk granules were formed by a combination of small yolk granules. In the mature oocyte, a mature yolk granule in composed of three components: crystaline core, electron lucent cortex, and a limiting membrane. According to cytological and histological observations, vitellogenesis occurred by way of endogenous autosynthesis and exogenous heterosynthesis. Autosynthesis involved the conbined activities of the Golgi complex, mitochondria, rough endoplasmic reticulum, whereas heterosynthesis involved endocytotic incorporation of extraovarian precursors at the basal region of the early vitellogenic oocyte. The follicle cells which was attached to oocytes, were involved in the development of the previtellogenic and early vitellogenic oocytes as a kind of nutritive cells containing a number of glycogen particles and lipid droplets in the cytoplasm.
To estimate the effects of limitation nutrients for phytoplankton growth and its influences on short-term variations of a winter phytoplankton community structure, we investigated the abiotic and biotic factors of surface and bottom waters at 20 stations of inner and offshore areas from 6 to 7 February in Gwangyang Bay, Korea. Also, several algal bio-assay studies were conducted to identify any additional nutrient effects on phytoplankton assemblage using surface water for the assay. The dominant species in the bay was diatom Skeletonema costatum, which occupied more than 70% of total species in most stations (St.1-16) of the inner bay. According to a cluster and multidimensional scaling (MDS) analysis based on phytoplankton community data from each station, the bay was divided into three groups. The first group included stations from the south-western parts of Myodo lsland, which can be characterized as a semien-closed eutrophic area with high phytoplankton abundance. The second group included most stations from the north-eastern part of Myodo lsland, influenced indirectly by surface water currents from offshore of the bay. The standing phytoplankton crops were lower than those of the first group. The other cluster was restricted to samples collected from offshore of the bay. In the bay, silicon (Si) and phosphorus (P) were not a major limiting factor for phytoplankton production. However, since the DIN: DIP and DSi: DIN ratios clearly demonstrated that there were potential stoichiometric N limitations, nitrogen (N) was considered as a limiting factor. Based on the algal bio-assay, in vivo fluorescence values in N (+) added experiments were higher compared to control and P added experiments. Our results suggested that nitrogen may act as one of the most important factors in controlling primary production during winter in Gwangyang Bay.
Two specimens of Ruvettus pretiosus (227.0 and 238.3 mm in standard length), belonging to the family Gempylidae, was firstly collected by using a gill net from the eastern coastal waters of Jejudo Island, Korea in November 2013. This species is characterized by having the following morphological traits: XV, 17~19+2 dorsal fin rays; II, 15~16+2 anal fin rays; belly keeled between pelvic fin and anus; body covered with cycloid scales, interspaced with rows of sharp bony tubercles. R. pretiosus can be easily distinguished from three Korean Snake mackerels (Thyrsitoides marleyi, Rexea prometheoides and Gempylus serpens) by having belly keeled between pelvic fin and anus, and cycloid scales covered the body and interspaced with rows of sharp bony tubercles. Based on morphological and molecular approaches, the specimens were identified as R. pretiosus. We propose new Korean names, "Gi-reum-chi-sok" and "Gi-reum-chi" for the genus and species, respectively.

It is more than half a century since anchovy boat seine has been introduced in Korean fishery to catch anchovies, but the study on it was began in 1970's by the authors. In 1971, the authors carried out an experiment about the net formation of the traditional gear in tow by using model net, and in 1978, about the patti net gear, commercially used in Japan. Now, the authors investigated the new model net, model 79, expecting to be suitable for commercial fishery in Korea, with the strong point of those two gears kept and the weak point of them corrected. The experimental gear was constructed attached the long net pendants to the fore end of extension wing by shortening its length in two-third of the traditional gear. Inside wing was improved so as to show high opening in tow. Rubber bobbins and hanging rings are used to prevent the heavy friction of bosom ground rope against the sea bed. The gear was used to catch anchovies in the commercial fishing ground in the south-eastern coastal waters of Korea, from May to October in 1979. From the experiment, the following results are found. 1. In opening height, the experimented gear was 30 percent greater than the traditional one. 2. It took 3 to 5 minutes for the bosom ground rope to sink from the surface to the sea bed, while 10 to 15 minutes for the traditional gear to do. 3. Ground rope never scooped mud, even in the muddy sea bed. 4. The gear showed better catchability than the traditional gear.

A series of fishing experiments was carried out in the eastern coastal waters of Korea from January, 2002 to March, 2003, using gill nets of different mesh sizes (m 180, 210, 240, 270 and 300 mm) to determine the size selectivity of gill net for female snow crab, Chionoecetes opilio. The catch of experimental gears was mostly snow crab (97%), Chionoecetes opilio. The maximum carapace length (RL) of each female snow crab caught in the fishing experiments was measured. The master selection curve was estimated by applying the extended Kitahara s method. The selection curve showed that the gill nets of larger mesh size allowed more female crabs of small carapace size to escape. The optimum values of RL/m for 1.0 of retention probability was 0.563 and RL/m was estimated to be 0.249, 0.290, 0.319, 0.344 and 0.367 when the retention probability were 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5, respectively.
