This paper reports the results of a study designed to understand and facilitate disaster mitigation for communities located in low frequency/high magnitude earthquake zones. The study is based on a small town located near the New Madrid Fault Zone and is therefore at significant earthquake risk. A system dynamics model describes the variables and policies governing the distribution of building safety over time. Data from this town is used to establish a 25-year baseline. Simulations are run to demonstrate the consequences of different building policies.

Blasting induced damage boundary was determined by measuring vibrations adjacent to charging holes. the criterion adopted to define damages is that blasting-induced strains exceeding tension-crack strain level cause damages. The blasting vibrations were measured in terms of acceleration and converted to strains. The tension-crack strain level was determined with tensile strengths and elastic moduli of rock cores. The damage zone was found to be extended radially about 1 meter from the blasthole detonated with 250 to 700 grams of explosives. The comparison of shear wave velocity profiles before and after blasting shows that the damage boundary of 1 meter seems to be reliable.

The seismic behaviors of steel moment connections are investigated based on the numerical analysis of the connections with US and Japanese typical details. The rupture index, representing the fracture potential, is used to evaluate the ductility of the connections at the critical location. The results show that the presence of a slab increases the beam strength, imposes constraint near the beam top flange, and consequently, induces concentrated deformation near the beam access hall, which reduces the ductility of the connection. The total deformation capacity of the connection depends not only on a beam but also on a column and panel zone.
Earthquake resistant design is evolutionary, and, although great progress has been made since seismic design was made mandatory by building codes, it is still not completely understood. In this paper, a 10 story steel building is analyzed and its results are compared by applying two different actual ground motions to the structure. 12 sets of Loma Prieta, California, earthquake data which occurred in 1989, and recorded 7.1 on the Richter scale and 9 sets of Valparaiso, Chile, earthquake data which occurred in 1985, and recorded 7.8 on the Richter scale were scaled to zone 2B level of UBC-88. By applying earthquake ground motions which had similar Richter scale magnitude, it was found that the Chile earthquake which had long duration of ground motion affected about twice bigger than that of California earthquake which had relatively short duration of ground motion. In addition to the peak ground motion, the duration of the ground motion is a very important factor in structural design.

Recent test results of steel moment connections repaired with a haunch on the bottom side of the beam have been shown to be a very promising solution to enhancing the seismic performance of steel moment-resisting frames. Yet, litle is known about the effects of using such a repair scheme on the system seismic performance of structures. To investigate the effects of haunch repair on the system seismic performance, a case study was conducted for a 13-story steel frame building damaged during the 1994 Northridge earthquake. When haunches are incorporated in a steel moment frame, the response prediction is complicated by the presence of "dual" panel zones in the column. A new analytical modeling technique for the dual panel zone recently developed by the author was incorporated in the analysis. Incorporating the behavior of dual panel zone was among the most significant consideration in the analyses. Both the inelastic static and dynamic analyses did not indicate detrimental side effects resulting from the repair.he repair.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship of between earthquakes and fluctuation of water level in a groundwater well of the active-fault zone and 124 national groundwater monitoring wells in Gyeongju area. The spatial and temporal relationships between the fluctuation of water level and the earthquake were analyzed by the calculation of earthquake effectiveness (ε) and q-factor which are the function of earthquake magnitude and distance from epicenter. Two earthquake events of E1 (April 22, 2019, M 3.8) and E2 (June 11, 2019, M 2.5) show a close relationship with a post-seismic 83 cm decrease and a pre-seismic 76 cm increase in water level at the active fault zone of Dangu-ri, respectively. The spatial analysis of water level fluctuation data in National Groundwater Monitoring Networks caused by earthquake events shows a more distinct response in deep groundwater around fault zones than other area, and a greater change in deep groundwater than shallow groundwater. It's inferred that the decrease and increase in groundwater level are affected by the expansion of fractures and compression of rock mass due to seismic stress, respectively. The effective ranges of ε-value and q-factor of the monitoring well in Dangu-ri were calculated as 2.70E-10~5.60E-10 and 14.4~18.0, respectively.

The reduced beam section (RBS) steel moment connection has performed well in past numerous tests. However there still remain several design issues that should be further examined. One such issue on RBS connection performance is the panel zone strength. Although a significant amount of test data are available, a specific recommendation for a desirable range of panel zone strength versus beam strength has yet to be proposed. In this paper, the effects of panel zone strength on the cyclic performance of RBS connection are investigated based on the available test database from comprehensive independent testing programs. A criterion for a balanced panel zone strength that assures sufficient plastic rotation capacity while reducing the amount of beam buckling is proposed. Numerical studies to supplement the test results are then presented based on the validated finite element analysis. Satisfactory numerical simulation achieved in this study also indicates that numerical analysis based on quality finite element modeling can supplement or replace, at least in part, the costly full-scale cyclic testing of steel moment connections.

Purpose: In this study, earthquake-induced landslide risk assessment was conducted to provide basic data for efficient and preemptive damage prevention by selecting the erosion control work before the earthquake and the prediction and restoration priorities of the damaged area after the earthquake. Method: The study analyzed the previous studies abroad to examine the evaluation methodology and to derive the evaluation factors, and examine the utilization of the landslide hazard map currently used in Korea. In addition, the earthquake-induced landslide hazard map was also established on a pilot basis based on the fault zone and epicenter of Pohang using seismic attenuation. Result: The earthquake-induced landslide risk assessment study showed that China ranked 44%, Italy 16%, the U.S. 15%, Japan 10%, and Taiwan 8%. As for the evaluation method, the statistical model was the most common at 59%, and the physical model was found at 23%. The factors frequently used in the statistical model were altitude, distance from the fault, gradient, slope aspect, country rock, and topographic curvature. Since Korea's landslide hazard map reflects topography, geology, and forest floor conditions, it has been shown that it is reasonable to evaluate the risk of earthquake-induced landslides using it. As a result of evaluating the risk of landslides based on the fault zone and epicenter in the Pohang area, the risk grade was changed to reflect the impact of the earthquake. Conclusion: It is effective to use the landslide hazard map to evaluate the risk of earthquake-induced landslides at the regional scale. The risk map based on the fault zone is effective when used in the selection of a target site for preventive erosion control work to prevent damage from earthquake-induced landslides. In addition, the risk map based on the epicenter can be used for efficient follow-up management in order to prioritize damage prevention measures, such as to investigate the current status of landslide damage after an earthquake, or to restore the damaged area.

Some network equipments made in Korea were exposed to severe earthquake in Japan several years ago. More than a hundred slim base transfer network stations had been seized with the severe earthquake at Nigata and it was reported that less than fifteen sets showed blackout by interruption of electricity, not by the structural failure. The purpose of this paper is to check the structural safety of the network equipments by performing table test, and the static and dynamic finite element analysis. For the dynamic test, the station weighing 200 kg was subjected to the Zone 3 earthquake loading of GR-63-CORE on the shaking table to obtain the dynamic responses to compare with the analysis results. It is shown that the FE analysis results are a little bit larger than that of the experimental values. And the sensitivity analysis and optimization for the natural frequency is performed and it is found that the first natural frequency is sensitive to small design change as shown in the results. And the dynamic response of optimized design is less than the original design.
The surrounding rocks of underground openings are natural materials and their mechanical behavior under seismic load is different from traditional man-made materials. This paper proposes a framework to comprehensively model the mechanical behavior of surrounding rocks. Firstly, the effects of seismic load on the surrounding rocks are summarized. Three mechanical effects and the mechanism, including the strengthening effect, the degradation effect, and the relaxation effect, are detailed, respectively. Then, the framework for modelling the mechanical behavior of surrounding rocks are outlined. The strain-dependent characteristics of rocks under seismic load is considered to model the strengthening effect. The damage concept under cyclic load is introduced to model the degradation effect. The quantitative relationship between the damage coefficient and the relaxation zone is established to model the relaxation effect. The major effects caused by seismic load, in this way, are all considered in the proposed framework. Afterwards, an independently developed 3D dynamic FEM analysis code is adopted to include the algorithms and models of the framework. Finally, the proposed framework is illustrated with its application to an underground opening subjected to earthquake impact. The calculation results and post-earthquake survey conclusions are seen to agree well, indicating the effectiveness of the proposed framework. Based on the numerical calculation results, post-earthquake reinforcement measures are suggested.
