  • Liquefaction of soil foundation is one of the major seismic damage types of infrastructures. In this paper, deterministic and probabilistic approaches for the evaluation of liquefaction potential are briefly summarized and the risk assessment method is newly proposed using seismic fragility and seismic hazard curves. Currently the deterministic approach is widely used to evaluate the liquefaction potential in Korea. However, the there are a certain degree of uncertainties in the soil properties such as elastic modulus and resistant capacity, therefore the probabilistic approach is more promising. Two types of probabilistic approach are introduced including (1) failure probability for a given design earthquake and (2) the seismic risk of liquefaction of soil for a given service life. The results from different methods show a similar trend, and the liquefaction potential can be more quantitatively evaluated using risk analysis method.

  • This paper introduces the status of and issues related to the PSHA (Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis) of Korean Nuclear Power Plant sites. PSHA was first introduced to the nuclear industry in the mid-1980s. The Korean PSHA is based on Cornell and accommodates the modem approach for eliciting expertise and statistical treatment. Due to the low seismicity in Korea, large uncertainties exist in the PSHA database including seismic source maps, seismicity parameters of seismic sources, and attenuation formulae. Though research in seismology, geology, and earthquake engineering since the mid-1990s has significantly reduced uncertainties, a considerable amount still exists. Considering the low seismicity of the Korean Peninsula, especially the lack of strong motion data, further reduction will take several decades.

  • Due to the improvement of the seismic hazard analysis method and the design code, dynamic analysis method is widely used. To conduct dynamic analysis, various coefficients should be designated. The time history acceleration is one of the most essential factor. However, strong earthquake motion data from the outside of the country have been used to conduct dynamic analysis without considering of the ground motion parameters. In this study, the methodology to choose appropriate input motion is developed by using time domain design spectrum matching procedure. Two examples are applied to verify the methodology. The Result shows that the methodology satisfies seismic circumstances and the design code.

  • This study proposed the Probability Density Function (PDF) interpolation technique to evaluate the seismic fragility curves as a function of the return period. Seismic fragility curves have been developed as a function of seismic intensities such as peak ground acceleration, peak pound velocity, and pseudo-velocity spectrum. The return period of design earthquakes, however, can be more useful among those seismic intensity measurements, because the seismic hazard curves are generally represented with a return period of design earthquakes and the seismic design codes also require to consider the return period of design earthquake spectrum for a specific site. In this respect the PDF interpolation technique is proposed to evaluate the seismic fragility curves as a function of return period. Seismic fragility curves based on the return period are compared with ones based on the peak ground acceleration for the bridge model.

  • In this paper the effects of fling-step and forward-directivity on the seismic performance of steel eccentrically braced frames (EBFs) are addressed. Four EBFs with various numbers of stories (4-, 8-, 12- and 15-story) were designed for an area with high seismic hazard. Fourteen near-fault ground motions including seven with forward-directivity and seven with fling-step effects are selected to carry out nonlinear time history (NTH) analyses of the frames. Furthermore, seven more far-field records were selected for comparison. Findings from the study reveal that the median maximum links rotation of the frames subjected to three set of ground motions are in acceptable range and the links completely satisfy the requirement stated in FEMA 356 for LS performance level. The arrival of the velocity pulse in a near-fault record causes few significant plastic deformations, while many reversed inelastic cycles result in low-cycle fatigue damage in far-fault records. Near-fault records in some cases are more destructive and the results of these records are so dispersed, especially the records having fling-step effects.

  • In the seismical capacity evaluation for RC structure wall-slab joint is very important factor. Because lateral load is resistance element and gravity load resistance element are acted mutually in the wall-slab joint. In this paper, to improve the seismic capacity of the wall-slab joint in the existing wall type apartments experiment which improve and retrofit a seismic capacity by unequal angle bracing and carbon sheet attachment are carried out. These methods are also economic and simple in mitigating seismic hazard, improve earthquake-resistance performance, and reduce risk level of building occupants. From the experimental results, the change of strength, degration of stiffness, and energy dissipation are evaluated. It can be concluded that these methods are effective in improving the seismic performance.

  • Acceleration analysis system transfers DSS into acceleration value utilizing Quantera that receives the measurement from the accelerometers installed in the whole nation. When earthquake occurs, the system gives accleration values in certain locations in a map where the accelerometers are installed. And it suggests a measure to fix the problems related to abnormal operations of accelerometers.

  • This research develops a methodology for standard design of spatial Database utilizing the disaster ethnography. Especially, the disaster response operation is sensitive to the size of the disaster, location, damage situation, resource a variability, etc. Moreover, there are many unknown and unexpected factors that will affect the disaster response strategy. But, the future Crisis Management Systems is needed that past disaster teaching. In another words, from now on the response systems need to prepare several scenarios and spatial data and manual etc. before the disaster. Then, this research is the experimental research which examined the relationship between the disaster-ethnography and the GIS spatial data of disaster.
