MIRIS(Multi-purpose Infra-Red Imaging System) is the main payload of the STSAT-3(Korea Science and Technology Satellite. 3), which is being developed by KASI(Korea Astronomy & Space Institute). EOC(Earth Observation Camera), which is one of two infrared cameras in MIRIS, is the camera for observing infrared rays from the Earth in the range of $3{\sim}5{\mu}m$. The optical system of the EOC is a Cassegrain prescription with aspheric primary and secondary mirrors, and its aperture is 100mm. A ring type flexure supports the EOC primary mirror with pre-loading in order to withstand expected load due to the shock and vibration from the launcher. Here we attempt to use the same mechanism by which a retainer supports the lens. Through opto-mechanical analysis it was confirmed that the EOC primary mirror is effectively supported.
In 1995 the VSOP satellite, which is called MUSES-B in Japan, will be launched under the VLBI Space Observatory Programme(VSOP) promoted by ISAS(Institute of Space and Astronautical Science) of Japan. We are now developing the GPS Receiver(GPSR) and On-board Orbit Determination System. This paper describes the GPS(Global Positioning System), VSOP, GPSR(GPS Receiver system) configuration and the results of the GPS system analysis. The GPSR consists of three GPS antennas and 5 channel receiver package. In the receiver package, there are two 16 bits microprocessing units. The power consumption is 25 Watts in average and the weight is 8.5 kg. Three GPS antennas on board enable GPSR to receive GPS signals from any NAVSTARs(GPS satellites) which are visible. NAVSATR's visibility is described as follows. The VSOP satellite flies from 1, 000 km to 20, 000 km in height on the elliptical orbit around the earth. On the other hand, the orbit of NAVSTARs are nearly circular and about 20, 000 km in height. GPSR can't receive the GPS signals near the apogee, because NAVSTARs transmit the GPS signals through the NAVSTAR's narrow beam antennas directed toward the earth. However near the perigee, GPSR can receive from 12 to 15 GPS signals. More than 4 GPS signals can be received for 40 minutes, which are related to GDOP(Geometric Dillusion Of Precision of selected NAVSTARs). Because there are a lot of visible NAVSTARs, GDOP is small near the perigee. This is a favorqble condition for GPSR. Orbit determination system onboard VSOP satellite consists of a Kalman filter and a precise orbit propagator. Near the perigee, the Kalman filter can eliminate the orbit propagation error using the observed data by GPSR. Except a perigee, precise onboard orbit propagator propagates the orbit, taking into account accelerations such as gravities of the earth, the sun, the moon, and other acceleration caused by the solar pressure. But there remain some amount of calculation and integration errors. When VSOP satellite returns to the perigee, the Kalman filter eliminates the error of the orbit determined by the propagator. After the error is eliminated, VSOP satellite flies out towards an apogee again. The analysis of the orbit determination is performed by the covariance analysis method. Number of the states of the onboard filter is 8. As for a true model, we assume that it is based on the actual error dynamics that include the Selective Availability of GPS called 'SA', having 17 states. Analytical results for position and velocity are tabulated and illustrated, in the sequel. These show that the position and the velocity error are about 40 m and 0.008 m/sec at the perigee, and are about 110 m and 0.012 m/sec at the apogee, respectively.
Wind vector information over the ocean is currently obtained using multiple beam scatterometer data. The scatterometers on ERS-1/2 generate wind vector information with a spatial resolution of 50km and accuracies of $\pm$2m/s in wind speed and $\pm$20$^{\circ}$ in wind direction. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data over the ocean have the potential of providing wind vector information independent of weather conditions with finer resolution. Finer resolution wind vector information can often be useful particularly in coastal regions where the scatterometer wind information is often corrupted because of the lower resolution system characteristics which is often contaminated by the signal returns from the coastal areas or ice in the case of arctic environments. In this paper we tested CMOD_4 and CMOD_IFR2 algorithms for extracting the wind vector from SAR data. These algorithms require precise estimation of normalized radar cross-section and wind direction from the SAR data and the local incidence angle. The CMOD series algorithms were developed for the C-band, VV-Polarized SAR data, typically for the ERS SAR data. Since RADARSAT operates at the same C-band but with HH-Polarization, the CMOD series algorithms should not be used directly. As a preliminary approach of resolving with this problem, we applied the polarization ratio between the HH and VV polarizations in the wind vectors estimation. Two test areas, one in front of Inchon and several sites around Jeju island were selected and investigated for wind vector estimation. The new results were compared with the wind vectors obtained from CMOD algorithms. The wind vector results agree well with the observed wind speed data. However the estimation of wind direction agree with the observed wind direction only when the wind speed is greater than approximately 3.0m/s.

Groundwater plays an important role in water and carbon cycles in Gwangneung forest watershed located in a complex landscape. Because groundwater affects electrical resistivity (ER) of underground materials, the depth to water table and water content in subsurface can be investigated through measuring ER. Accordingly, the ER survey has been employed more frequently in recent hydrological investigations. Quantitative applications of the results of ER survey will contribute significantly to the examination of water budget closure at various spatiotemporal scales. This paper presents the preliminary results of the ER survey conducted at Gwangneung forest watershed to determine proper locations and depths of monitoring wells. Such use of ER survey, in conjunction with an integrated geophysical investigation and geographic information system, can provide more effective examination of underground structure and optimal locations of monitoring wells to further our understanding of the role of groundwater.
This study analysed student teachers' notable questions about the earth science contents in the elementary science textbooks. The contents of notable questions were defined as ‘notable question contents 1' and 'notable question contents 2'. Both the question contorts are contents about which the number of questions is above three times and from two times to three times as much as the mean number of questions per page of each unit respectively. The results are as follows. First, question contents 1 are found as 'clouds observation', 'geological strata formation' and so on. Question contents 2, 'rainfall measurement', 'moon's movement during one night' and so on are found. Second, the number of interrelationships of main terms in questions increased in each question of question contents 1, but 4 term-patterns are found more in question contents 2 than question contents 1. Third, high interrelationship patterns of terms in question contents 1 are 'coal and petroleum-generation', 'metamorphosis-heat and pressure', 'metamorphosis-heat and pressure-metamorphic rocks', 'planet-sun-comet-revolution' and in question contents 2. 'constellation plate-use', 'dryness and wetness hygrometer-principle', 'seismograph-principle-earthquake', 'earth rotation axis-tilting-occurrence', 'dryness and wetness hygrometer-principle-humidity' and so on. The sources of questions analysed in this study are estimated as the content construction system of textbooks, or students' general questions about the earth science contents. If this is the former, the problems in texts and illustrations in textbooks should be articulated and resolved. And if the latter, the elementary science curriculum has to be reconsidered in view of scientific literacy in earth science.

To differentiate temperature effect from the light intensity effect on the formation of secondary products during the photooxidation of toluene-$NO_x$-air mixtures, steady-state air temperature was changed from $20^{\circ}C\;to\;33^{\circ}C$ at the same light intensity of $0.39min^{-1}$ in an indoor smog chamber. Smog chamber consisted of 64 blacklights and a $5.8m^3$ reaction bag made of Teflon film. Air temperature was controlled by an air-conditioning system. The starting time for rapid conversion of NO to $NO_2$ was slightly delayed with decreasing air temperature. In contrast to light intensity effect, the ozone formation time and the ozone production rate were insensitive to air temperature. Although the formation time for secondary organic aerosols was not changed, the particle number concentration increased with temperature. However, the newly formed secondary organic aerosol mass at lower temperature was higher than that at higher temperature. Since light intensity significantly affected the starting time and quantity of ozone and aerosol formation, it is considered that the temperature could contribute partly the quantity of aerosol formation during the photooxidation of toluene-$NO_x$-air mixtures.

This paper presents an analysis technique for estimating the properties of a target's power-spill patterns observed in reconstructed SAR images, which in turn depend on the setup squint angle of the FMCW signal-based SAR system. The target responses observed in the reconstructed SAR images were affected by the range-direction and azimuth-direction of a wave projected on the ground, and the obtained results were analyzed by applying three-dimensional squinted SAR geometry. Furthermore, the rotation patterns were verified through simulations based on the FMCW signal model and back-projection algorithm. This paper summarizes the obtained evaluation results as a function of SAR geometry and squint angle.
Solar system small bodies are unusual objects in astronomical survey data in that they are moving on the celestial sphere. In addition, even in a normal status, their magnitudes are changing over time, firstly because their relative positions with respect to the Sun and Earth are continually changing, secondly because they are rotating bodies with non-spherical shapes. Furthermore, some of them might exhibit unexpected activities, which could be caused by mass ejection or disintegration. Detections and observations of such activities are challenging due to their abrupt nature. Therefore, continuous monitoring observations of large number of Solar system small bodies are required to systematically obtain detailed/transient information about them. Since 2018/2019 winter, we have launched a new project using Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet) for detecting such transient phenomena of Solar system objects. Our main goal is to monitor the magnitudes and detect sudden brightness changes. We also plan to discover interesting new objects, and monitor rotational brightness oscillations of asteroids. We intend to monitor the magnitudes of ~ 20,000 known Solar system small bodies per night, and acquire lightcurves of ~ 1,000 asteroids.
Baikdu-san was a very active volcano during the Cenozoic era and is believed to be formed in late Cenozoic era. Recently it was also reported that there was a major eruption in or around 1002 A.D. and there are evidences which indicate that it is still an active volcano and a potential volcanic hazard. Remote sensing techniques have been widely used to monitor various natural hazards, including volcanic hazards. However, during an active volcanic eruption, volcanic ash can basically cover the sky and often blocks the solar radiation preventing any use of optical sensors. Synthetic aperture radar(SAR) is an ideal tool to monitor the volcanic activities and lava flows, because the wavelength of the microwave signal is considerably longer that the average volcanic ash particle size. In this study we have utilized several sets of SAR data to evaluate the utility of the space-borne SAR system. The data sets include JERS-1(L-band) SAR, and RADARSAT(C-band) data which included both standard mode and the ScanSAR mode data sets. We also utilized several sets of auxiliary data such as local geological maps and JERS-1 OPS data. The routine preprocessing and image processing steps were applied to these data sets before any attempts of classifying and mapping surface geological features. Although we computed sigma nought ($\sigma$$^{0}$) values far the standard mode RADARSAT data, the utility of sigma nought image was minimal in this study. Application of various types of classification algorithms to identify and map several stages of volcanic flows was not very successful. Although this research is still in progress, the following preliminary conclusions could be made: (1) sigma nought (RADARSAT standard mode data) and DN (JERS-1 SAR and RADARSAT ScanSAR data) have limited usefulness for distinguishing early basalt lava flows from late trachyte flows or later trachyte flows from the old basement granitic rocks around Baikdu-san volcano, (2) surface geological structure features such as several faults and volcanic lava flow channels can easily be identified and mapped, and (3) routine application of unsupervised classification methods cannot be used for mapping any types of surface lava flow patterns.
