  • With the rapid development of the distributed strain sensing (DSS) technology, the strain becomes an alternative monitoring parameter to analyze slope stability conditions. Previous studies reveal that the horizontal strain measurements can be used to evaluate the deformation pattern and failure mechanism of soil slopes, but they fail to consider various influential factors. Regarding the horizontal strain as a key parameter, this study aims to investigate the stability condition of a locally loaded slope by adopting the variable-controlling method and conducting a strength reduction finite element analysis. The strain distributions and factors of safety in different conditions, such as slope ratio, soil strength parameters and loading locations, are investigated. The results demonstrate that the soil strain distribution is closely related to the slope stability condition. As the slope ratio increases, more tensile strains accumulate in the slope mass under surcharge loading. The cohesion and the friction angle of soil have exponential relationships with the strain parameters. They also display close relationships with the factors of safety. With an increasing distance from the slope edge to the loading position, the transition from slope instability to ultimate bearing capacity failure can be illustrated from the strain perspective.

  • We have solved the radiative transfer problem using a Sobolev approximation with an escape probability method in case of the supersonic expansion of a stellar envelope to an ambient medium. The radiation from the expanding envelope turns out to produce a P-Cygni type profile. In order to investigate the morphology of the theoretical P-Cygni type profile, we have treated $V{\infty},\;V_{sto},\;{\beta}$ (parameter for the velocity field), M and $\epsilon$ (parameter for collisional effect) as model parametrs. We have found that the velocity field and the mass loss rate affect the shapes of the P-Cygni type profiles most effectively. The secondarily important factors are $V{\infty},\;V_{sto}$. The collisional effect tends to make the total flux increase but not so .much in magnitude. We have infered some physical parameters of 68 Cyg, HD24912, and $\xi$ persei such as V$\infty$, M from the model calculation, which shows a good agreement with the observational results.

  • Seismic exploration is divided by reflection and refraction method greatly, and reflection method can analyze complicated underground structure in the basis high resolution image, and refraction method can grasp the velocity structure of underground accurately. This thesis confirmed application of mixed exploration techniques using advantages of reflection and refraction. Reflection data processing applied conventional technique, and inversion of refraction data applied travel time tomographic technique that using SIRT method. Also, could establish initial information in model variable and improved the result of inversion by restricting model parameter value and dimension of area. Confirmed efficient fact in sequence and velocity structure grasping by utilizing accurate initial velocity model made out on the basis of marine reflection data, and mixed exploration technique using reflection and refraction have propriety that can trust in field application.

  • A new method is presented to recover missing deformation data of lateral walls of foundation pit when the monitoring is interrupted; the method is called Dynamic Mathematical Model - Parameter Interpolation. The deformation of lateral walls of foundation pit is mainly affected by the type of supporting structure and the situation of constraints, therefore, this paper mainly studies the two different kinds of variation law of deep horizontal displacement when the lateral walls are constrained or not, proposes two dynamic curve models of normal distribution type and logarithmic type, deals with model parameters by interpolating and obtains the parameters of missing data, then missing monitoring data could be Figured out by these parameters. Compared with the result from the common average method which is used to recover missing data, in the upper 2/3 of the inclinometer tube, the result by using this method is closer to the actual monitoring data, in the lower 1/3 part of the inclinometer tube, the result from the common average method is closer to the actual monitoring data.

  • This paper describes and assesses the parameterisation of MP, the microplankton compartment of the carbonnitrogen microplanktondetritus model. The compartment is 'the microbial loop in a box' and includes pelagic bacteria and protozoa as well as phytoplankton. The paper presents equations and parameter values for the autotroph and microheterotroph components of the microplankton. Equations and parameter values for the microplankton as a whole are derived on the assumption of a constant 'heterotroph fraction'. The autotroph equations of MP allow variation in the ratios of nutrient elements to carbon, and are largely those of the 'cellquota, thresholdlimitation' algal growth model, which can deal with potential control of growth by several nutrients and light. The heterotroph equations, in contrast, assume a constant elemental composition. Nitrogen is used as the limiting nutrient in most of the model description, and is special in that MP links chlorophyll concentration to the autotroph nitrogen quota.

  • In the case of the remediation studies, push pull test is a more time and cost effective mettled than multi-well tracer test. It also gives Just as much or more information than the traditionally used methods. But the data analysis for the hydraulic parameters, there have been some defections such as underestimation of dispersivity, requirement for effective porosity, and calculation of recovery of center of mass to estimate linear velocity. In this research, Weibull distribution function is proposed to estimate the center of mass of breakthrough curve for Push pull test. The hydraulic parameter estimation using Weibull function showed more exact values of center of mass than those of exponential regression for field test data.

  • Profiles of naturally fractured surfaces of three sedimentary rock samples were plotted from the measured data using a mechanical profilometer. Fractal dimension of these profiles were computed and statistical F-test indicates that fractal dimension (FD) values can be used as a parameter for distinguishing the rock types. The comparison between FD values and a commonly used profile-roughness parameter called the Mayer's $Z_2$ parameter shows the superiority of the FD values as roughness estimator. Two-dimensional fractal roughness parameters of the same naturally fractured rock surfaces were also studied from their scanning electron microscopic (SEM) images at various magnification levels. The most suitable level of magnification of the SEM images for the study of the 2-D fractal roughness parameter was identified. The values of 2-D fractal roughness parameter for three different rocks were also compared using different methods of fractal dimensioning.

  • Shallow groundwater systems are highly vulnerable to anthropogenic contamination and are characterized by a variety of redox condition. The redox state is a key parameter to control the nitrate contamination which is related to nitrification or denitrification processes. In relation to the control of nitrate problem, it is very important to understand the source, transport and fate of nitrogen compounds in a groundwater system. (omitted)

  • The effects of rare earth element (R.E.) and cooling rate on the eutectic reaction of flake graphite cast irons were studied by combined analysis of macro/micro-structure and cooling curve data. The correlation between eutectic reaction parameter and macro/micro-structure was systematically investigated. Two sets of chemical compositions with the different addition of R.E. were designed to cast. Three types of molds for cylindrical specimens with the different diameters were prepared to analyze cooling rate effect. The difference between undercooling temperature and cementite eutectic temperature (${\Delta}T_1=T_{U}-T_{E,C}$), which is increased by adding R.E. and decreased by increasing cooling rate, is considered to be a suitable eutectic reaction parameter for predicting graphite morphology. According to the criterion, A-type graphite is mainly suggested to form for ${\Delta}T_1$ over $20^{\circ}C$. Eutectic reaction time (${\Delta}t$), which is decreased by adding R.E. or increasing cooling rate, is a suitable eutectic reaction parameter for predicting eutectic cell size. Eutectic cell size is found to decrease in a proportion to the decrease of ${\Delta}t$.
